I have had some questions about the quality of photographic vs xerox reproduction of genealogy documents. I have found photos are much better than most zerox machines. If anyone else is interested in the quality I can send you a sample as an email attachment of a page made with a 6 mB digital camera. Jack Spangler Ellicott City, MD
Thank you, Genevieve, and yes, you are right about June and I. She is in the process of writing a book on the Reeds, and I'm trying to motivate her to get it finished. It is amazing how many connections she has found over the years. All of you die hard genealogists are to be admired and respected for your patience. I have found it takes a lot to do all the necessary footwork. Hi, In January I drove up to get GPS readings for this cemetery which Phyllis & Archie Sumner had documented in 1990. Some of those buried there are kin of Phyllis. Donna, you are doubtless closely connected with June Simpkins who gave me her grandfather's dates. He was born 16 Sep 1872, Floyd and killed in Monticello, IL 22 Dec 1903. And she gave me Savinda's maiden name as Akers. In case you want them, the coordinates are: N 26 57.249 W 80 27.261 Genevieve ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Hayden" <dhayden@swva.net> To: <vafloyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 10, 2008 10:42 PM Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Fw: Floyd County Genealogy -- Charlie Reed Cemetery > Hi Georganne, > I'm sorry to say that probably half of the graves in that cemetery belong > to > my family. Hi Georganne, I'm sorry to say that probably half of the graves in that cemetery belong to my family. My brother, son and niece went there several years ago and took some pictures, so I know it's in bad shape. They had to walk a long way to get there, but since then my husband has talked to someone who said we could drive over their land to shorten the distance. If you look on the VA GEN website at cemeteries, then go to Charlie Reed Cemetery, you can find a list of graves. Peter Reed, Susan Reed, Savinda Reed Zentmeyer are grandparents of mine and infant daughter of Charlie & Ora born Oct. 7, 1925 was my stillborn sister. My grandfather, David Peter Reed, who was Savinda's first husband is buried there, but no one can find his stone. They moved to Illinois around 1900 for him to work for the railroad and he was ran over by a train around 1903, so she came back to Floyd with her two young sons, one of which was my father. He was 5 years old at the time. I'm also wondering about your house. My uncle, who was also named Charlie Reed lived in a house in front of the cemetery. I will call you later in the week or over the weekend and we will see what we can get together and do.We will be more than happy to tackle this project with you. Hello, Carlisle, I have a couple of corrections to make to the list of parents of Kelley and Peters who are buried in the Vest Cemetery. I thank Mary Williams for helping with this information. KELLEY, ROSS M., 1893 - 1933 This is actually Deross M. Kelley, s/o George Nathan Kelley and Jane Ann DeWeese. His name has also been found recorded as: Ross and Derossie. KELLEY, IDA K. Their son is also buried in the Vest Cemetery: KELLEY, LEWIS ALTON, 18 FEB. 1919 - 12 NOV. 1939 s/o DeRoss M. Kelley and Ida E. Georganne, If that is the cemetery near Kevin Mitchell's home, I was in there 15 years ago and it was grown up and full of groundhog holes 'way back then.. I think there are a couple of Isaac Reeds and 2-3 Susannah Reeds in there as well as some unmarked graves... Do you live in the brick house near the Dulaney store where Glenn Reed lived? I am on rt..8 at the end of Rt. 750 Paul Collins keep the mail comin' to Ole Paul
This map doesn't have many of the cemeteries in Franklin County, but I thought I'd pass this on in case someone could use the information. There had been considerable interest recently in photo documenting various cemeteries in the area. Also I note that Rena has been spending a lot of time in Richmond making copies of various documents. Film cameras and Xerox copies are expensive. However I have been able to use a cheap 6 mB digital camera (Canon A540) and make excellent quality coipes of paper documents and they are a lot bettet than a xerox copy. A 6mB camera gives about 150 dpi resolution for a 8.5 x 11 inch page which is adequate for OCR software to convert a printed page into a word procesing document. I have used my camera with very good success. Since Rena and the others documenting cemeteries share their work with all of us, I would like to suggest that we all chip in and get a camera for them to use. I suspect we can get a good camera, tripod and other accesseries for $200 or less. If any member of the forum is interested in this project please contact me off the forum and we will discuss it. My email is mjs15@verizon.net. Jack Spangler Ellicott City, MD
Hello all, Since this is the second Sunday in the month, I thought I would beg for help one more time on my brick wall. I am hoping that someone on the list has access to the marriage records in Schoolfield (Pittsylvania County) VA. The year would be between 1915 and 1918. The names John Henry Howell (nickname Tobe) and Lillian Thompson (I have seen her name spelled as Lelia on two of her childrens marriage records). Marriage took place November 2 by a John Marshall. My grandmother (Lillian) was 85 years old when she relayed this info to me so me may have told me wrong. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. The problem about the photo has a good ending. Cousins have met, and I received a nice note of explanation from the sender. I'm glad to have put some people together and I'm pleased to say all is well that ends well. I took a break, and did some other things today that were pressure on me. I have to fix a couple things and add some more things. THANK you all for your faith in me. I read all your notes with tears in my eyes. Rena
That IS good news! There's nothing we do here on the list that should ever hurt anyone else's feelings. I'm so glad to know the sender understands we are good folks now! Hooray for happy endings! Jack, There is a Shank Cemetery on Beaverdam Creek on US221 North, between Bethlehem and Stonewall Roads, on the left going north. We are trying to meet with the person who has his cattle in there when he will have the gate open so we can get in to document it. My grandmother's name was Sara UNDERWOOD (1823-1029) who married Samuel YOPP. She was a daughter of John Henry UNDERWOOD and Jane ATKINS PRATER. Lots of "sources" on the internet give her name as Sara JANE Underwood. I have a faint memory that my mother once said that her mother's name was Sara DOCIA Underwood. Her tombstone in the Moran cemetery says Sara D. Yopp. HELP! Jack Spangler Ellicott City, MD
Rena & Everyone, On my wonderful trip to Floyd I took many, many pics. Sorry to say I listed 2 pics of headstones to the wrong cemetery. Following are buried in the Stonewall Cemetery, not the Vest Cemetery: 1. Margaret Hoback W/O C. D. Vest + C. A. Yates, 6/3/1847- 6/24/1942 2. Rettie R. Lawrence Vest 9/19/1876- 3/8/1934 + James S. Vest 11/10/1868 - 9/12/1956 Sorry- Janice Smyth
Hello, we are researching our family of descendents of Peter Young born about 1755 we think in Virginia. We have it nailed from him to us but his earlier family is still a mystery to us. He married Mary Barton. Can anyone fill us in? carol and Shannon **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. (http://money.aol.com/tax?NCID=aolprf00030000000001)
