    3. I need some advice from all my rootsweb buddies. What is the best way to clean an old tombstone? It appears to be faded and worn from age, making it hard to read some of the engraving. I don't want to do anything or use anything that would hurt the stone. Anyone have any suggestions? thanks Donna Hayden

Rena ----- Original Message ----- I suspect the chances of Ancestry.com harvesting information from the Floyd genforum site are minimal. The information is not usually presented in a form they could easily get without extensive manual labor with the possible exception of the cemetery data and Barb R's data. One way to discourage Ancestry.com is to put a copyrite (c) symbol on photos that you own and cemetery and other tabular data which one of our members has generated. For data such as Barb R has posted I guess the best bet is to keep it in a format not easily harvested via software. Jack Spangler Ellicott City, MD

    3. Rena: I want to personally thank you for posting these pictures of the Troutville Cemetery. My father, John V. Rader, was the driving force behind keeping this cemetery going, keeping it clean, mowed, etc. for over 60 years. In fact, before his death, he established endowments to make sure this cemetery would be kept clean and neat. Plus he established endowments in the name of his wife, son and his parents. His parents were John G. & Ada Berta Rader and my mother was Martha Bishop Rader and my brother was Donald Ray Rader. As you know, my dad passed away Dec. 8, 2007. (My brother and I haven't had the gravestone marked with his death date yet, but soon). There are so many of my Rader relatives in this cemetery, so much appreciated for the photos. This cemetery is just about a "city" block from my home place and adjoins my brother's land there in Troutville. A note on another subject: I was getting ready to send you Bishop information, as we had talked before about, but seeing how much stuff you already have, I'll wait til you get caught up. Again, thank you so much for all your hard work. It is very much appreciated. 3. I am open minded about looking for a new site. It must be FREE, and it needs to have unlimited space, and if I go to all that trouble, who is to say that if Ancestry wanted the info they could still get it. I have a lot i'd like to "Just share with my Floyd family", but that would require us paynig for a site and then you would have to use a password to gain access. I don't think i'm ready for all that web authoring. Let's go with the change and see what happens. I have looked at Yahoo, they have a small limit on what I can post. Our photos would take up more than is avaliable with them. I looked at Mindspring, and that's a possibility, although I don't know how much space I can get for free. I looked here, http://genealogenie.net/ as this is where some of the other CC's are going. Who owns the space? I don't know??? How much space can we get, I don't know that either. Moveing is not as easy as just saying "Let's go". we have to pack up, and not leave a crumb behind, cause if you do, then something is not going to work. I moved my Craig county site from Yahoo-Geocities to Rootsweb not long ago. It took me about 10 hours, and it's a small site. I have Loudoun, Rockbridge, Botetourt, Craig, Roanoke, Floyd, Franklin, and Patrick all volunteer projects. I work a full time job and I am too busy to think about moving all these sites just because Ancestry has access. I hope you all understand where i'm comming from. I don't mind us discussing this, but the decision has been made between Rootsweb & Ancestry's parent company. Nothing we can say to change this. Thank you Miss Kat. You made my day. Now I have work you all sent me and if I can i'll try to get some of it posted. Doug sent me two cemeteries, and John sent me two cemeteries, Bob sent me deveral deeds for the Lemon family, Doris gave me abt 100 pictures to finish off Troutville Cemetery in Troutville, Va., and I took 69 photos in Fairview~Buchanan & 117 photos in Godwin Cemetery in Fincastle this week. also received 6 new Pension apps for Rockbridge County.....I'm tired already, just thinking ....

Ancestry is a MONOPLY! and this is why I do not belong any more. I gave up my membership more than 5 years ago and swore that I would never rejoin them. Now that I have put my two words in I will go back and be disgusted that they can do this to us. I wasn't aware of it. Rena, I am wondering what your thoughts are about Rootsweb changing to Ancestry? How they will handle the information we share on this forum? I have never minded sharing my information with anyone, but I sure don't want it to be sold to enhance Ancestrys money making business. Most of our research was done by time consuming hard work and expense. For a company to have to do nothing but "copy and paste", put it on a CD and sell it, bothers me. I have read some blog from the website below, but I would like to hear what our list has to say about it. 1. [VAFLOYD] About the change.
    2. Rena Worthen
    3. This move will not change the RootsWeb experience or alter the ease of navigation to or within RootsWeb. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together. If you have questions regarding this change please email them to feedback@rootsweb.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have no comment right at the moment, other than as far as I know Rootsweb has always been owned by the same company as Ancestry, so if they wanted to "copy and paste", my guess is, that they have always had the opportunity to do so..... Free is good..... I do not plan to "Jump ship" or move my websites from Rootsweb, although I see some are doing just that. I have no money to buy unlimited space for all our "stuff". Rootsweb gives me all the space I need. I Think we are ok here. Rena

    3. I agree. Although I hate the thought of someone having to pay for work all of us have done, the bottom line is that we have been sharing it publically and they could have always come in, copied it, and used it before now. Probably did. I don't think much will change. I'm sticking with Rena. Kinda like Ruth in the Bible--where you go, I go. Where you stay, I stay! 3. Dear, dear Rena: I agree with you. I think we should "go with the flow" till we see what really happens here. Moving everything around is simply mind boggleing. I cannot say that I like Rootsweb becoming a part of Ancestry.com, but as you intimated, the decision has already been made. I just hope it will work out for everyone. And I did read the blogs on the newsletter that Kasia was so kind to post. Some good points made there. Allison Rena Worthen <doreatr@rbnet.com> wrote: I am open minded about looking for a new site. ********************************** Note from List Administrator!!!
