    1. [VAFLOYD] Burks Fork or Union School?
    2. Bernie Hylton
    3. On Rena's Floyd County Schools webpage, there is a picture of "Burks Fork School 1913" with one student identified as Stella Pratt. I sent Rena and she has posted a list of the 1918-1919 pupils of Union School which also includes Stella Pratt. My Dad, Alvin, his brother Frank and sister Hattie are in the list, too. Is the pictured "Burks Fork School" in fact "Union School?" ### Bernie Hylton

    3. Carslile, I don't have anyone scheduled to take photos at the Daleville Cemetery. I will work on that next time I get a volunteer. Do you know where in the cemetery the family plot is located, i'll try to pop in and do them myself. It is a big cemetery with about 1000 inturments. Those big cemeteries are not on the top of the list.. People like to take a small job and get it done. Please let me know who to look for. 3. Jimmy, I have looked thru my Rader ancestors that I have on hand, but don't find a Loy Rader. When I can get in touch with my cousin, I'll ask him about a Loy Rader. We have so many Rader's and they went every where after leaving the Botetourt County, Va. area. I know some went to West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, Illinois and points west. If I find him will let you know. 3. Yes, the Union School building is still standing. It is owned by David & Janet Keith and is just above Union Church. The picture John Webb posted with the class of about 1913, is at Union School. The Burk's Fork School was further toward Willis just off of Conner's Grove Road onto Weddle Road. It was on the left. 3. Paula, The older Kelley's School is probably the original building which sat about 100 feet behind the Kelley's School building that exists today. This building looks to be older than cir 1877. I suspect that a school was on this site several years before the land was deeded to the county. I went to Paynes Creek School for 3 three years (1947 -1949) before they closed the one room schools. Then I went to Check for the remainder of my education in Floyd County VA Bill Moran -----Original Message----- From: vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:vafloyd-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Rena Worthen Sent: Monday, April 14, 2008 12:54 AM To: vafloyd@rootsweb.com Subject: [VAFLOYD] School photos added http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vafloyd/FloydCountySchools.html ********************************** Note from List Administrator!!! 3. Paul, I am related to them. I never knew any of them, but we come from the same family. A few years ago a Rev. Jim Cochran attended our Cochran reunions, and his great-grandfather was brother of my grandfather. I'm sure the girls you just mentioned are part of that family. Jim now lives in Florida. 3. If anyone has photos of schools that you would like posted, send them, and i'll make a school section. I'm putting that camera to good use. I have just finished copying FCVA marriages from 1831 to September 1933. That finishes that roll of film... Index incomplete... I'm getting there on the cemetery photos I was only about 200 behind till i received a phone call saying that "I took 400 pictures for you today". Yippie!!! I can't wait to get them. the oldest interment in this cemetery was 1850. It is White Church or Mt Pleasant Cemetery just northeast of fincastle. . There are some civil war soldiers in it. Here is what I dad on it, but will move it to Botetourt rootsweb which it's linked to already. It is a lot of work to move it, so right now here you go.. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~renaworthen/MtPleasantChurchBotetourtCountyVA.html

    3. Hi Bernie, Other than Union School which is beside Burks Fork Church, the only school on that road is THOMPSON SCHOOL. I started school there in 1936. It was a one-room school and Lena Cannaday was our (super!) teacher. Naturally, she was an OLD woman. She is buried in Topeco Cemetery and she was 59 when she died. Really, really old, eh? I digress. I believe it might have been 1938 when most one roomed schools were closed and we were bused to Willis. Clovis Harman bought the building and converted it into a house. Alice Slusher lives there now. I can remember a few of those in the school back then, but not sure I remember your brother. I was Genevieve Cochran, as you know. Weren't Iva & Ruby West your cousins? They were there when I was. Is this the school?
