    3. This Camp Creek is on state road 615 now called C burg pike or old pike road. have a lot of folks buried there and I know the list is not complete. There are Davis' buried there only I don't think their graves are marked. They donated the land for the old Camp Creek church. 1. Re: [VAFLOYD] History - Lewis-Gale Hospital - 100 years old
    2. Paula Kelley Ward
    3. Lewis-Gale was in Roanoke when I had my tonsils and adenoids removed in 1947. The new Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem was dedicated in 1972. I just found a website with the history of Lewis-Gale Hospital (it was tricky to find!): History of LGMC http://www.lewis-gale.com/CustomPage.asp?guidCustomContentID={F38BB138-523B- 4396-835A-97BF052B5F4B} If that doesn't work, go to: http://www.lewis-gale.com/ Then click on: "About Us" and in that menu, click on: "About Lewis-Gale" which will take you to: http://www.lewis-gale.com/CustomPage.asp?guidCustomContentID=6B27A156-BA2B-4 E74-ABF3-BC9CA49885D1 On that page (!) in the first paragraph (under "Our Mission"), click on the highlighted "100 years" - and that will take you to the history! There are a couple of old pictures of the hospital on that page. There was a Jefferson Hospital in Roanoke - I haven't been successful in finding any history about it, except for mention of the Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing which was founded in 1914. I'm not positive, but I think Jefferson Hospital became Roanoke Memorial Hospital, which today is Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Both of my brothers and my sister were born in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. 3. You're right, Betty. Lewis-Gale, Jefferson, Shenandoah, Roanoke Memorial, Gill Memorial... all were Roanoke Hospitals. Roanoke Memorial and Gill Memorial survived in town and Roanoke Community was built in Roanoke, and Lewis-Gale built a new facility in Salem. Pardon my anachronistic error. Carolyn

    3. Hi, Kay. About asking people "do you know / have kin..." My sister-in-law, born in Princeton, WV, lived her teens in Roanoke, went to Longwood College in Farmville, VA... left school to marry a Keydet from VMI, traveled about while he served in the Army and later for NASA and IBM, lived in Quonset Point, RI, Pittsburgh, PA, Fort Sill, OK, Cheverly, MD, and Manalapan, NJ, among other places. After her four children were all in school, went back and completed her Bachelors and her Masters in Speech Pathology at Rutgers, divorced, moved to Southern CA with her two younger children and worked as a Speech Therapist to support them. One day at a nursing home, she was working with an elderly patient who had suffered a stroke that had damaged her ability to speak. In the middle of the session, another elderly woman opened the room door and poked her head in to say hello, and apologized for interrupting the work. My sister-in-law, who had long ago left her SWVA accent behind, nevertheless had the ear to recognize one when she heard it, and asked the woman from where she hailed. She was born and raised in Wise Co, in far Southwest VA, she said. Knowing that she had numerous relatives in that region, my sister-in-law asked about the woman's family names, found out one of them was NICHOLS, asked further questions and found out that they were second cousins! The genealogist within strikes, again! *~) Clouds keep drifting overhead bringing darkness where there was light, but the sunlight breaks through. We were inundated yesterday, but no rain so far today. Sounds like we're in a similar weather pattern, these 2000 miles away. Enjoy your Sunday. Carolyn

A neighbor of ours suggested spraying diluted Dawn dish detergent around the outside of the house..I already know it works wonders on keeping the dogs free of fleas.. We tested the Dawn solution by encircling one of the little earwig varmints on the carport ... It crawled around inside the circle a few mins...then walked through the mixture...and it died just seconds later.. Would the Sluggo Plus be safe to spray my Irises ? 3. Ann, we moved here in September 1967, when Virginia Beach Blvd. was still, at least for much of its length, a two-lane road with interspersed stretches of "service roads" alongside from Norfolk to the oceanfront. Now, VB Blvd. is four lanes in each direction, the service roads are almost all gone, and there's the Interstate "spur" that parallels the boulevard all the way from the riverfront in Norfolk to the oceanfront at the beach. The neighborhood we live in now, and have for over thirty years, was only a horse pasture or farmland when you left the area. We live in the vicinity of Acredale, which was a crossroads community at the intersection of Kempsville and Indian River roads. My daughter Docie started kindegarten at a fairly new elementary school in an adjoining neighborhood, Indian Lakes Elementary. By the time she was in second grade, she went to a brand new elementary school, Providence Elementary. In the fourth grade, she and her younger brother were enrolled in brand new Centerville Elementary. Both went to middle school in Brandon Middle, and she went to high school first at Green Run High, then to brand new Salem High, and by the time her brother was in ninth grade, he was in the first freshman class at Tallwood High School, from which he graduated. That was the only school that either of them could walk to throughout their school years. Oh, and all of those schools had portable classrooms for the overflow, from the day they opened their doors! I was gone from the area for over five years in the late '90s and early '00s, and when I returned there had been so many changes made that I got turned around several times and didn't know where I was in relation to familiar roads close to my house! Now that's a weird feeling! 8~0! I hope Ken suffered no permanent damage to his arm... Carolyn
