Bill, Let us all be proud of Darian being from Floyd. Now if we can get the news papers to get their info right about another racer from Floyd,,,Curtis Turner. It burns me up when this news paper writes about racing and says he is from Roanoke. And then they put the brother of Glenn Wood in the paper and say he is Glenn. Some of these writers ned to do a little homework Wayne In Pulaski ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Conner" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, July 07, 2009 4:12 PM Subject: [VAFLOYD] Fw: Test/Not geneology > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "William Conner" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, July 07, 2009 11:55 AM > Subject: Re: [VAFLOYD] Test > > >> Jack, >> I recieved the link also. Bill, I still have not received the two emails I posted on the forum. Apparently they went out but for some reason I never received them back. I have added index to all the surnames in the Floyd obits as well as links to some other sites. You may be interested in visiting the WWII Victory museum site. It also has a museum of cedicated to auto racing. The museums are sponsored by dvk foundatio, the owner of the Auburn, Chord, Dusenburg museum in Auburn, Indiana. If you are ever in the area that museum is the first place to go for a racing buff. The Photo of the Grub man was from my mother's collection. He was from Floyd or maybe Franklin Co., since mother grew up in the Copper Hill area near Franklin county. Mother did not remember his name or else I did not record it. She talked about him as being the man without a nose. ---------------- Jack, I recieved the link also. I spent time going thru some of it. The picture of the Grub man was interesting. When I was teaching at Floyd there was a young man named Darian Grub, who was a student there. Darian favors this Grub quite a bit. Was this Grub from Floyd? After getting his engineering degree from VT he went to work for Rick Hendricks racing. Two years ago he was the substitute crew chief for Jimmy Johnson when Johnson won the Daytona 500. This year he is the crew chief for Tony Stewart and Stewart is leading the point standings and just won the July 4th race at Daytona. Anyone heard anything about the Poff Reunion at Head of the River which is supposedly held on the last Sunday of the month in July? Logan Jennings

Since the list is so quiet, thought I'd share the latest on my exploits as a tomato farmer in beautiful SW Virginia. Not to sound (again) like an ad for the "Topsy Turvy" planters, but my upside down tomato plants are growing like crazy! I have 3 planters up and each of the plants are at least 4 feet long or more now. I have about a dozen tomatoes growing on the "Big Boy" plant and 7 or 8 on the German pink one. The Mr. Stripey plant is just now starting to flower. My cherry tomato plant that's in the ground is covered up in fruit. There's got to be at least 100 little maters all over it! Just picked a nice red one and ate it on the spot! Sweet as candy! I bought that plant at Lowes and it has grown like nothing you've ever seen. It's about 6 feet across now--one plant!!! My other plants in the ground that I started from seeds are all starting to flower now, too. If I just get one tomato off those plants, I'll feel like a real sucess because I never grew anything "from scratch" like that before. Those were seeds I saved out of nice tomatoes we got at the local farmer's market last summer. Forgot to mark the bags, though, so I don't know which plant is which and could end up with red, yellow or dark purple maters when they come in! It'll be a surprise...LOL. Guess I could also do a good commercial for Miracle Grow "shake and feed." My mother in law put out tomatoes about the same time as mine, but didn't use Miracle Grow garden soil or the fertilizer and her's are about half as big as mine. That stuff really works! So any way, I'm now officially a Virginia farmer...ha!

Mary, Thanks for the look up. Unfortunately Ancestry.com data is in error. Phyllis sent me the same info off line along with their source citation. I question the accuracy of their source. Daniel and Mary's children were born between 1747 and 1761 per bible records (which I do not have - but mentioned in info collected for the Spangler family reunion july 22, 1916) Several people have info posted on World Connect showing these dates but also show the correct names and dates for their children. (Their children were born between 1747 and 1761) I cannot find in my records a Daniel with a birthdate of 1760. I have never found any info in Franklin Co for a Daniel Spangler with a 1760 date. Daniel was born about 1716 from age records in Franklin Co. and died 1787. There is confusion on Mary's Date of death. Tombstone says Mary Spangler age 100yr 1820. Her will was probated in Montgomery Co., VA 1818. ------------------ Name:Daniel Spangler Gender:male Birth Place:VA Birth Year:1760 Spouse Name:Mary Noftsinger Spouse Birth Year:1762 Marriage Year:1780 Marriage State:VA This is what was on Ancestry, Mary ________________________________ Does anyone have access to Ancestry, com U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900. I am searching for the parents of Dempster Wood b. ca. 1835 and died after 1862; lived in Washington County, VA. He married Margaret Fields and they had 5 children: Mary, Joseph Craig, Elizabeth, Cynthia and Sarah. Thanks for any help. Connie
I have updated the index for the Floyd Press Obituary files on my website to include not only the name of the deceased but the surnames appearing in the index. There are lots of cases where the surname is also a given name, the name of a town (Floyd or Willis for example) and businesses such as Maberry, Wood and Gardner's funeral homes will also appear in the index. Hope this don't make the index too confusing. See: www.genealogy.the-spanglers.net -- Jack Spangler Ellicott City, MD

Many years ago, down close to where we lived in Florida (DeFuniak Springs,) they DID accidently drop a bomb on someone's house. Eglin AFB is close by and they were practicing but somebody hit the wrong button and they dropped a live bomb (non-nuclear, of course) on an occupied house...killed a couple of people, I believe. Considering how many military planes constantly fly over that area, though, I guess one accident every 50 years isn't so bad...
