    2. I read your message about migrations to Mercer Co., KY. This is to inform listers that a good many Fauquier and Culpeper Co. VA folks migrated to Mercer Co. Kentucky and to the adjoining county of Garrard Co. But look all around that area, including Madison Co., KY. Examples: Kemper and Holtzclaw family descendants. People seldom migrated alone--they needed protection from whatever lay out in that unpaved and unsettled area! The tax lists for each Kentucky county are a fabulous substitute for censuses. They list a man as soon as he is eligible to pay taxes, even if all he has is a horse. As the years went along, the tax lists got more detailed, even asking how many children in the family (probably for school purposes). You may find the neighbors of your ancestor are also relatives. You can find lists of these filmed tax lists under Place Search of the Family History Library Catalog on www.familysearch.org The link to the catalog is on the lower right side. Also on the left under the heading *vast databases* are transcripts of the 1880 US census. Some errors but, still, what a find! E.W.Wallace
