    2. Jim Burgess
    3. Dear Fauquier County, Virginia Genealogist, Through the years I have been extracting a lot of information on the Smith family of the Northern Neck. Here is my William Smith and Margery ROWLEY. I have a chapter on every county with partial information on the Smith family. I hesitate to share the information as it is in such a mess. My goal has been to determine who the father of William SMITH who married Margery ROWLEY. There must be 25 possible men who might be the father of William Smith who married Margery Rowley. Anyone have ideas, would love to correspond. The Smith family information of Westmoreland County, Virginia is at the bottom of this email. thanks Jim Burgess Fauquier County, Virginia USGENWEB William SMITH & Margery ROWLEY King George County, Virginia 1690 - 1741 1a. Michael died in April 1797 in Ellerslie, King George County, Virginia. NOTE: Lettice WISHART is mentioned in the will of William Rowley Junior Excerpt from the Will of William ROWLEY Junior King George County, Virginia written 11 May 1874 and proved 2 Jun 1774 King George County, Virginia Will Book 1 page 354 documents in my opinion that our Joseph SMITH who was the first cousin of William ROWLEY Junior had two brothers named Thomas and William. Item. I give unto Rowley Smith the sum of five pounds and whereas I sold unto Joseph Smith a negro woman and two children for whom he agreed to pay to me the sum of ninety pounds which is still due. My will is that the said Joseph do pay unto William Smith and Thomas Smith the sum of thirty pounds each out of the said ninety pounds and I acquit the said Joseph of the remaining thirty pounds and I release all other debts to every of the last named legatees. The migration path for our SMITH family seems to be Old Rappahannock, County, Virginia to King George County, and Stafford County, to Prince William County, Virginia and finally to Fauquier County, Virginia. NOTE: Anyone who tries to under SMITH families has lost his mind. Jim Burgess WILL OF WILLIAM SMITH (Father of Joseph SMITH) SMITH, William (d.i., 1741.) COB#2, p.248: 3 Apr 1741 = Administration on the estate of William SMITH, deceased is granted to his widow Margery with William ROWLEY, Jr., and John GRANT her securities. On the same day Margery SMITH gave bond as administratrix of William SMITH, deceased, with William ROWLEY, Jr. and John GRANT, her securities (Bond Book #3, p.10) The bond of the administratrix was in the sum of L200 Current Money and an inventory of his estate was promptly returned to court on 1 May 1741 and recorded in I#1, pages 264-265. COB#2, and Margery, his wife , deliver the estate of William SMITH, deceased, to William Rowley , Junior and John GRANT who were her securities for her proper administration of his estate; otherwise to her said securities counter security &c. From this and other recordings it is certain that Margery, widow and administratrix of William SMITH, deceased, married secondly the said George HENAGE. Perhaps the best record that proves the relationship between Joseph Smith and his father William Smith is found in King George County, Virginia Deed Book 1743-1752 page 81-84. “Between Joseph Smith of Prince William County and Anne his wife formerly sold unto William SMITH, father of the said Joseph. WHO ARE THE PARENTS OF WILLIAM SMITH? We need more documentation to determine who the real parents of William SMITH are? At first review the couple named Edward SMITH and his wife Lettice had a son named William SMITH. That is the correct age to be our William SMITH. Our William SMITH had a daughter named Lettice and his mother was named Lettice. Sounds good to me. King George County, Virginia Deed Book 2 page 17-20 George Mason of Stafford County by deed 28 Mar 1692 and by said Mason sold unto Martin Scarlett by deed 1 May 1694 and said Martin Scarlet devised by his last will bearing date 5 Jan 1705/6 unto William SMITH son of Edward SMITH and Lettice SMITH and in case said William SMITH before he attained twenty one years of age to the heirs of Lettice SMITH’ s for ever, who is the Scarlett Hancock land bounded upon the river side .. corner tree of Richard Shipway into woods on west side a path leading to Parson Waugh’s land of John Fossaker Note: The name Edward does not appear in our family; however, Lettetia certainly appears many times. Certainly there are several more William SMITH men in the area. Let’s review them and the records that we have available to us in the 21st Century about 300 years ago. You certainly have done a lot of work!! I think it will be critical to have a great Table of Contents to make the volume more user friendly. It was scary to me that I was the last leg in the chain and made so many corrections--obvious typo things like someone being married before they were born, etc. Libby cited HARDY throughout her corrections. We need to remember that books are written by people--who may not have had three editors. PS--More and more I think that my elusive William SMITH d. 1671 Westmoreland may connect to our Joseph SMITH of Fauquier somehow, but maybe not as an ancestor--maybe a many-grt uncle. His daughter Elizabeth m. a Daniel BROWN who was a son of a Francis and brother to another Francis. I think there is a COLEMAN connection further down AND they all lived near each other. A neighbor was Thomas GERRARD m. Rose (maybe Allerton) NEWTON, TUCKER. Their county became King George for a while. Mary (?) SMITH --the widow of William SMITH d. 1671 m 2) Samuel REEDS b. 1645--my forever brick wall ancestor d. Westmoreland--connects to HACKLEY, PIPER, MARSHALL, UNDERWOOD, KENDAL, CLAYTOR I have Samuel REEDS' will with no mention of Mary, so she must have pre-deceased him. Please watch for these people. His son went to Culpeper and m. Sarah HACKLEY, do Judith BALL and John HACKLEY--have much on these people. I do not have Mary's maiden name!! We have so many names alike. It was fun to see your picture in the book. You look just like my dad's first cousin --Duncan Hutchison REEDS.
