    2. While it may not always be the case, giving children the surname of a relative as a first name was not unusual, especially in large families who followed the naming conventions of the time. In one of my family lines, the youngest son (at least the 9th child) was named Smith Sanford McCrary. Don't know where the Sanford came from yet, but his mother's maiden name was Smith. I think by the time they got down to naming him, they may have run out of names of the conventional sort :-) Bushrod, like Armstead, may well fit in the same sort of pattern. Harriet
