I heard one genealogist-lecturer (PhD and lives in Salt Lake City) explain that a lease and release was to avoid paying taxes!!! I have seen these in other Virginia counties, generally executed one day apart. Sounds logical, but I think if I think about it the next time I am near a Black's law dictionary, I shall look it up.
