    3. Dear Fauquier County, Virginia Genealogist, My booklet on the Blackwell family is nearing completion. I have chapters on the Pickett and Keith Families. Would someone who is related like to write the chapter on these families. Do not want all the information - just two or three generations with documentation! I have a start on these families, but since they are not directly related I have not worked on them. It might be best if several members of the list worked on each chapter. Contributors Thanks to the following members of the Fauquier County, Virginia who have made contributions to this work. Here is the list of people who have been working with me. May I have permission to include your names as contributors? JOSEPH BLACKWELL was born about 1636 in England or Virginia. Joseph lived at “The Poplars” in Northumberland County, Virginia. He may have returned to England before his death. We do not know the name of Joseph BLACKWELL’s wife. Northumberland County, Virginia was formed in 1648. Blackwell Genealogy by Commander E. M. Blackwell U. S. Navy Commander, Retired. Richmond, Virginia Old Dominion Press, Inc. There is a tradition that has been handed down in the family that three Blackwell brothers emigrated from England to the Colonies early in the 17th century. They were men of high standing and education, being graduates of Oxford. In 1908 I was informed by Mr Edgar Blackwell of Tipirs P O and Wicomico Church, Northumberland County, Virginia and the oldest Blackwell in that section, that the first settler was Joseph Blackwell who was sent over by Charles I in 1636 as "King's Surveyor" and he was given a seal with the Blackwell Coat of Arms on it, probably the seal for his official papers. In 1909, Mr Blackwell's son, Harding, visited me at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland and showed me this seal of which I made several wax impressions. In 1936 I visited Mr Harding Blackwell at his residence "East Gascony" Rehoboth Church, Northumberland County Virginia and he again showed me the seal. From this it would appear that Joseph Blackwell, King's Surveyor, 1636 was the first emigrant to Virginia. He was probably a young man and may not have remained permanently in Virginia, but went back to England and educate his son Joseph (Pleb, Trinity College, Mat. July 2, 1658, who came later to Virginia. Honorable Joseph Blackwell, King's Surveyor, the progenitor of the Virginia family is supposed to have been the eldest of the three brothers who emigrated early in the 17th Century. Honorable Robert Blackwell, the progenitor of the Newton (Long Island ) family came to New York as a widow with several children. He married Mary Manning daughter of Captain John Manning, who owned Cierken, on Hog Island, in East River which was confiscated from the Dutch in 1651. It was called Manning Island and later it was called Blackwell's Island when Robert Blackwell came into possession of it. Robert also owned Ravenswood, no Long Island City in Brooklyn. He died in 1717, leaving issue......... Honorable Joseph BLACKWELL, the progenitor of the Virginia family, was of the "Poplars" Northumberland County, Virginia. He was a graduate of Oxford and came to the Colonies in 1636, being sent over as the King's Surveyor, he played an important part in the early history of America. He was a staunch Royalist and a firm and loyal supporter of the established Church. He also owned "Walnut Lodge" and it is here that many of the family are buried. The original seal with the Blackwell Arms is now in the possession of one his descendants Edgar Blackwell of Northumberland County, Virginia. His wife's name is not known and their heir appears to be Samuel BLACKWELL. Child of JOSEPH BLACKWELL 2a. SAMUEL BLACKWELL, SR., was born 23 Sep 1680 Northumberland County, Virginia Samuel died 17 June 1732 – 5 Aug 1732. Samuel married Margery DOWNING daughter of William DOWNING and Mary.
