Moses, 1 Hugh ] born 22 Feb 1770, Carlisle, Cumberland Co PA, married 4 Jan. 1798 Elizabeth Wilson, born 15 Sept 1782, died 7 April 1857. James died 20 Oct. 1838, He moved to Abingdon, VA shortly after his marriage. He traded salt for valuable land in the TN River Valley. He contracted with a salt producer named James Sanders to buy all the salt that Sanders could produce, but Sanders built additional furnaces and produced unlimited amounts of salt. Salt piled up at Ditto's Landing in Madison Co. Records show that J.W. Lane traded a large tract of Limestone County land near Mooresville for 30,000 bushels of salt. Part of this tract was apparently Section 11, Township 5, range 4 west, which juts out into the Tennessee River. Milton White, son of James, sold this section to Luke Matthews. Matthews later willed the land and that adjoining it to his daughter, Lucy Spottswood Matthews. After Lucy's marriage to David Irvine White, the property was again in the White family. It is possible that Lucy, who lived in Huntsvlle, AL never visited this idyllic spot, called The Cave Place after a cave was discovered on the property. A log cabin, evidently built as a caretaker's cottage, formed the nucleus of the present structure, but it's date of construction is not now known. James White is said to have had fifty five mercantile concerns [including one at Gunter's Landing in present day Marshall Co.] at one time in Virginia, TN, AL and Georgia. Children; 1. Jane C. Gilbert Greenway White III 2. Lee Irvine White If anyone can connect William White born 10 Jan. 1755 Fauquier Co [actually was still Prince William Co VA until 1759] to this family, we would be very grateful. William fought in Rev. War from VA [ pension application no S1735 filed from Lincoln Co TN in 1832] and lived in old Rowan/Stokes Co NC for 30 years following the Rev War. He then relocated with many of his Moravian neighbors to Lincoln Co TN where they all appear in the 1820 census, [ Leatherman, Felps, Zimmerman to name a few]. William died in May , 1833 in Lincoln Co TN. His daughter married in Lin. Co TN was; Martha b 1814 Stokes Co NC md Samuel C. Miles, his sons; James Franklin b 1816, md Martha V. Payne, Carr Bailey White b 1818, md Martha Warren and Mary Elizabeth Watson and William Clark White md Polly Nixon and Eliza K. Wilkerson. These children were born by his then wife, Elizabeth ---- born NC. She was 20 years younger than William and he was aged 58 when their first child, Martha, was born. William surely married at the end of Rev War or shortly before, in Fauquier Co VA, and she prob. died in upper North West part of NC. Any clues to help us find the first wife and children would be greatly appreciated after all these long years of researching. The name Carr Bailey figures heavy in the child naming in our White family even to present date. This work would not be possible without the dedication and time spent collecting much of it by Paul.
