http://www.rootsweb.com/~vafauqui/lawva.htm While doing a search through Google for Samuel Massie I got a "hit" for the above link. I had never seen this page before...and it is extremely interesting. Jim, you did a good job! The marriage bond of William C. Blundell and Mary Polly Massie is included on the above site. It states Samuel Massie dec'd on the bond. The thing that some of us have discovered is that we do not believe Samuel Massie was deceased! It "appears" that his wife Tamer Cowgill, was deceased about 1799, and he went on to remarry a Catherine Farnsworth in 1801, sire more children, and ended up in Indiana, IF this is the correct and same Samuel. I wonder if the license/bond clerk was told "her father was Samuel and her mother was deceased" and the clerk wrote the record incorrectly. Samuel and Tamer had Sarah, Phineas, Samuel Jr, Mary Polly, & Lewis Massie between 1786 and 1799, but perhaps had married as early as 1780. Samuel and Catherine had Mordecai, Levi, Isaac, David, Phebe, Joseph & Ruth between 1803 (the first 3 before 1810) and about 1820. Samuel died 1845-1850, Catherine died 1861-1870. 1797 Samuel, Tamer and son Phineas bought land. Thomas and Nancy Ann White and Samuel and Tamer sold land in 1797in Fauquier. Could Nancy have also been a daughter of Samuel and Tamer? 1799 Samuel was co-executor of Will of James Cowgill (WB F p88, 24 Jan 1799) along with Ralph Cowgill, $2000. bond. Security William Carter and Robert Russell. 1808 son Samuel Jr married Sarah Suffrons in Jefferson Co, VA.. In 1809 Samuel and Catherine bought land in Loudoun Co. 1810 Jefferson Co, VA Census 3 0 2 0 1 and 1 2 2 1 0 that translates to: 3 M -10, 2 M 16-26, 1 M 45+ and 1 F -10, 2 F 10-16, 2 F 16-26, 1 F 26-45 (Catherine 29?) If so, Samuel is at least 50 (1840 census) and born 1760 or earlier. 1819 Mary Polly married Blundell in Fauquier Co, VA. 1820 Loudoun Co, VA Census 2 2 1 1 0 1 and 3 1 0 1 0 that translates to: 2 M -10, 2 M 10-16, 1 M 16-18, 1 M 16-26, 1 M 45+ and 3 F -10, 1 F 10-16, 1 F 26-45 (Catherine 39?) (1820 - 39= 1781 birth year) 1824 A Samuel Massie purchased property in the Estate sale of Lewis Lyder: 29 Nov 1824. 1830 August Loudoun Co, marriage license for daughter Phebe requested by Samuel and witnessed by sons Mordecai, Isaac and Levi. They also sold their land in Loudoun Co in 1830. After this, around late 1830 or early 1831 he and Catherine moved to IN. In March 1831 Samuel and sons Mordecai and Isaac bought land in Delaware Co, IN. In 1834 they sold this land and moved to LaPorte Co, IN. According to a marriage licence held in the Porter County Library, Valparaiso, IN, Samuel gave his minor daughter Ruth Massey permission to marry Abram Carmack in 1836 in Porter, IN, with Levi and David as witnesses. 1840 he and Catherine are believed to be in the household of their youngest son Joseph Massey. In the 1840 Census he is listed in the 80-90 year range. 1842 and in 1845 Samuel and Catherine sold land in LaPorte, IN to son Levi. 1850 Catherine was listed as still being in the household of Joseph and his family. Catherine is listed as being 79 years on the 1860 census in IN. Would anyone care to jump in with any additional info, or disputes of what I show at this point? I believe there would not be any records regarding orphans, since the father was not deceased; am I correct? There might be apprentice records. Are there any Farnsworth researchers who could join in? Thank you. Tosca
