    2. Thank you for sending the following message. This seems to confirm that a Harmon Button prior to ca 1790 was married to a Catherine Kemper. From Alcock's book: Button, Harmon, Deed book 5, p 499, 1774 John Smith to him 1/3 of 1741 grant to Henry, Mary, and Catherine Kemper; Smith "heir of body" to Catherine; Button m. to her. Ephraim and Jacob Kemper. Also listed Harmon Button, Jr. and Jacob Button and Thomas Button My response: I found my notes about Henry Kemper (Kamper), which are rather cryptic, and which now require more study on my part: HENRY KEMPER. (ca 1730-after Nov 1787) Information for dates of Henry Kemper come from NSDAR Gen Recs Comm, Lineage of Andrew Jackson Kemper. Henry Kemper is probably earlier known as John Henry Kemper, all the German children (males particularly) having the same first name, with the second name being the "calling" name. The name of John Henry Kemper appears in early Northern Neck surveys and land grants. Survey for Prince William Co., survey made for Thomas Jordan, 11 Mar 1739- 21 May 1740; between Carters Great Run & Barrows Run on Rappa. R. "adj John Henry Kemper." (Peggy Shomo Joyner's ABSTRACTS OF VIRGINIA'S NORTHERN NECK WARRANTS & SURVEYS... DUNMORE, SHENANDOAH, CULPEPER, PRINCE WILLIAM, FAUQUIER & STAFFORD COUNTIES 1710-1780, V. III, p. 117.) At approximately the same time, John Kemper/Kempar, apparently the father, had land surveyed. "Wart adds Peter Kemper, and the chain carrier was Peter Kemper. However, at the bottom: N.d. - "in the name of Heni [Henry], Catharina & Maria Kemper." These are probably all children of John Kemper. Abstract of the actual grant, as opposed to the survey, differs somewhat in wording: Northern Neck Grant Bk E-408 Heni [Henry?], Catherine Kemper & Maria Kemper son and daughters of John Kemper of Pr. William Co. 362 A in said Co. on the Great Run of Rappahannock R. adj. Kemper's other land. Thomas Lee, Esq., Heirs of Maj. Richard Buckner decd. Surv by Mr. John Savage. 22 Jan 1741. (Gertrude E. Gray, NORTHERN NECK LAND GRANTS, Vol I) One Henry Kemper with wife Lettis (Lettice) was in Fauquier Co. 1764 until at least 1784. Fauquier Co. Gott, FAUQUIER COUNTY, VIRGINIA, DEEDS 1778-1785, Vol. 2 [Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1993], p. 81-82) Thanks for your interest. Now I have to sort out whether these pertain to the same Henry Kamper and try to determine more about his siblings. Back to the books (and film) when I get rid of some of my home chores and volunteer work!!! E.W.Wallace
