Other than using a catalog at a public library or a genealogical library near you, one of the most reliable sources for determining what MAY be available is the Family History Library Catalog. For example, if you are researching Prince William Co., from which Fauquier Co. was formed, do a Place search on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) Type in prince william and then virginia If you want the rent rolls or similar tax lists, go down to the bottom of the topics and click on Taxation. One has to learn the terminology of the catalogers at FHL. Vital records pertain to births, marriages, and deaths [few in early Virginia unless you can get hold of a church register book]. Probates and land records are very important but tax records are also VERY useful for determining a time and a place. But, what the heck? Genealogists should use every record available. Court records may tell you scandals in the family!!! I was just reading one for early Kentucky. The son of my ancestor (I am linked to the daughter) was hauled into court for abusing his apprentice!!! And the trial went on for a time. E.W.Wallace
