I, too, hope we can sort this out, as I descend from Joan and Roger WILLIAMS, through Susannah m before 1680 to William PHILLIPS to their dau Susannah PHILLIPS who m before 1707 John RUCKER ... whose descendant eventually married a BARTLETT whose ancestor Thomas BARTLETT c1730-1807 lived in Fauquier Co, VA 1768 to 1785... ;>j Jim Bartlett; Bethesda, MD [new] -----Original Message----- From: Hdanw@aol.com [mailto:Hdanw@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, September 11, 2004 4:06 PM To: VAFAUQUI-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VAFAUQUI] Joan (--) Williams, Lloyd, Wills and Her Children Dear geniebug, Thank you for providing the website with information about Joan, the constantly widowed lady, widow of Roger Williams. (None of whom lived in Fauquier Co., which is a newcomer county in the scheme of Virginia politics.) I do have a dispute with the compiler of the website in this respect: We have no positive proof that Joan's former name was Frith. (Admittedly this has little to do with Fauquier Co. residents--or does it?) There is question whether Joan was Nathaniel Frith's daughter. With luck, we might be able to find some more evidence. Research shows that Joan's daughter apparently was a goddaughter of Nathaniel Frith and not his granddaughter. >From my notes: The will of one Nathaniel Frith was written 3 Jan 1676/77 and proved in [Old] Rappahannock Co. 4 July 1677. "To sons Nathaniel & William Frith my Plantation wch I now live on and the Land belonging to it which is in all 150 acres to be equally divided betwixt them and if one dies the other to have it all. To wife Elizabeth all my moveables & Cattle saving only one cow calf to be deivered to my God daughter Rebecca Williams, daughter of Jone Williams. Wife Elizabeth Executrix and if she die Afore they come of age then my two sons Nathaniell & William to be possest wth their land at 17 years of age. "Wit. Rupert Berker Head [Berkenhead], aged 27 years or thereabouts, Lewis X Jones, aged 40 years or thereabouts. Page 32 [of Will Book]." Note that the will, or at least the transcript of it, states Rebecca Williams, daughter of Jone Williams, is GOD daughter and not granddaughter. Nathaniel Frith could well have been the brother of Jone Williams, but the relationship of the two is not stated. In 1683, one John Frith was one of three witnesses to an (Old) Rappahannock Co. deed (DB 1682-1686) Richard Whitehead, Glocester Co., to Thomas Coomer of Parish of Ware in Glocester Co. for land in Rappahannock Co. John Frith's relationship to Nathaniel Frith is unknown. .......... Much later the will of one Anne Frith was proved in Henrico Co. in 1740. (As abstracted by William Lindsay Hopkins, SOME WILLS FROM THE BURNED COUNTIES [Richmond, 1987], p. 60, quoting from Henrico county wills as abstracted by Benjamin B. Weisiger) I would hope we could get some solid evidence that Joan had the maiden name of Frith. As it is, it seems Nathaniel Frith is the godfather of Joan's daughter Rebecca. Sorry we have to interrupt Fauquier Co. discussions, but maybe some Fauquier Co. residents really do have roots in previous Virginia counties.
