Barbara, I cannot directly answer your question about Elizabeth Marshall's relationship to Chief Justice John Marshall, but can offer the following, taken from Jean Smith's excellent biography of John Marshall. The oldest identified male Marshall of this line was John Marshall, known as John of the forest, who married Elizabeth Markham in 1722. Marshall family legend as related by Chief Justice Marshall's sister Eliza (Marshall) Colston was that Elizabeth Markham was the step-daughter of Blackbeard the Pirate. John Marshall of the forest and Elizabeth (Markham) Marshall had son Thomas Marshall, their eldest child, and five other children, unnamed in the book. Thomas Marshall married Mary Keith, daughter of James Keith and Mary Isham (Randolph) (Arden) Keith. Mary Isham Randolph eloped at age 16 with an Irish slave overseer Enoch Arden and had a child. The Randolph family found the couple on Elk Island on the James River and killed Arden and the child, driving Mary to near insanity. While recovering, Mary Isham Randolph had an affair with the parish minister James Keith and was caught in flagrante delicto. James was dismissed from his parish, but later married Mary after she had come of age. Thomas Marshall and Mary (Keith) Marshall had eight daughters and six sons: 1. John Marshall, the Chief Justice, born in 1755; 2. Elizabeth (Marshall) Colston, born in 1756; 3. Mary (Marshall) Humphrey, born in 1757; 4. Thomas Marshall, born in 1761; 5. James Markham Marshall, born in 1764; 6. Lucy (Marshall) Ambler, born in 1768; 7. Alexander Keith Marshall, born in 1770; 8. Louis Marshall, born in 1773; 9. Susan (Marshall) McClung; 10. Jane Marshall; 11. Nancy (Marshall) Daveiss; and 12, 13, & 14. Unnamed in the book, but all survived their parents. John Marshall, the Chief Justice, married Mary Willis Ambler and they had the following children: 1. Thomas Marshall, born July 24, 1784; 2. Rebecca Marshall, born on June 15, 1786, and died five days later; 3. Jaquelin Marshall, born c. 1787; 4. Mary Ann Marshall, born on November 24, 1789, and died Aug 1, 1792; 5. John James Marshall, born on Feb 13, 1792, and died on June 10, 1792; 6. Mary Marshall, born c. 1794; 7. John Marshall, born on Jan 13, 1798; and 8. James Keith Marshall, born on Feb 13, 1800. This Jean Smith biography of John Marshall is outstanding and I highly recommend it. The information above indicates that your Elizabeth Marshall, daughter of James P. Marshall, would probably have to have been a granddaughter of one of Chief Justice Marshall's brothers or a descendant of one of his unnamed uncles (if any) to be related to the Justice. In any event, I hope the above helps you in your tracing. Best wishes, Robert N.
