Actually, I jumped the gun in my excitement over recognizing the name "Mrs. Francis Beach." It turns out that Francis/Frances was the *daughter* of Mary Evans Thayer; I read it with the thought that Francis was the name of the daughter's husband; ie hopefully the Francis Beach who was husband of Lydia. There was no Lydia in the mix at all. Tim was kind enough to write me back off list to let me know that. It would certainly have been an unexpected early Christmas present if it had turned out to be a breakthrough. But even though it wasn't, it still shows that there is always information tucked away in those old documents that really do help solve puzzles in the most unexpected places. I'm so grateful to Tim and to everyone else who post original documents in the public domain. I'm going to look into scanning some documents I've collected to the freepages website; maybe they will help someone else discover a new lead.
