    3. Osiyo Bea: Yep, that is correct. Lots of families just plain refused to be taken Westward, on the Trail of Tears (or the Trail that Cryed). The Army just plain refused to spend money hunting them down. In KY, TN, WV, NC and etc. they married into the European races and never registered. My family on both sides of the house fit into that situation. Further. They can be traced backward into the REYONDS, ROLFE, BOLLING, McDONALDS, PRICE, WARD, HUGHES, HARLAN, HINDABRAND, FOX, COOKE, BLANKENSHIP, LESTER, WHITT, COMBS, LEWIS, BENGE, ROSS, GUNTER and etc. Plus most of the Eastern Seaboard Native American Tibes. wado, Jim

    3. Jim, I have Reynolds, Rolfe/Ralph, my husband has Downs and Combs. But, can't tie them to the EBC. they went from VA to KY or TN. Am still trying to find the Downs in GA, however. The thing that some people don't realize is that, if they find their ancestors where there are columns for "free colored people", (in the 1800 - 1840 census) or "all others not taxed.". There is a huge chance that they are indeed, Native Americans, not Mulatto or Black. (even though there may be some mixed ethnic background in all.) Slaves were not counted because they were "real" property and the owners paid tax on them. Native Americans were not taxed. At least, until they intermarried with the whites enough to be considered so. Consequently, if you cannot find your ancestors on the tax list for your county and you know they were there. You "may" have a case for tribal affiliation. (not necessarily Cherokee.) You have to know where the different tribes lived. I still recall one lady who swore she was from the Cherokee tribe in Arizona and New Mexico. :-D Jim, are you from the GA Winninghams? I had a dear friend who was. Never did find her line to the eastern band however. Best wishes to all, Sue James Winningham wrote: >Osiyo Bea: > >Yep, that is correct.
