    1. [VAFAUQUI] Guardianship lookups Leach and general information
    2. ____________________________________ Paul and others, I was interested in the guardianship lookups that were going on a month or so ago but did not think I needed any information until recently. In reviewing my source documentation with a cousin it was mentioned that since the mother, Sarah/Sally Leach was listed as the head of house hold in the Frederick County 1830 census, that there would be guardianship papers around because in those days they didn't just give the kids to the mother!? Is this true? Even though I don't think her husband was dead yet since in 1832 another son was born and on his 1855 marriage record his listed his parent as Elijah Leach. Can anyone shed some light on the subject? Thanks, Stan Leach ____________________________________ Start the year off right. _Easy ways to stay in shape_ (http://body.aol.com/fitness/winter-exercise?NCID=aolcmp00300000002489) in the new year. **************Start the year off right. 3. Stan, it's not that the children wouldn't be permitted to live with their mother - they would, but a male guardian was usually appointed to look after the children's financial and educational interests. I guess it was thought that a woman couldn't handle such responsibilities! 3. It was not as frequent, but women were also appointed by the court for younger minors or chosen by a minor fourteen years or older to be a Guardian. The Guardian was required to periodically give an accounting of the inherited estate to the court for audit. If the Guardian failed to properly handle the estate a new Guardian would be selected. Here are a few examples of female Guardians for the 1830 time period from "Fauquier Co Guardian Bonds 1759-1871" by Gott. HARRIOTT N. UTTERBACK, apptd. gdn. of Maria Louisa Utterback, orph. of Willis Utterback, dec'd. 28 Dec. 1829. MARY HITT, chosen gdn. of Elizabeth Ann Hitt, orph. of Martin Hitt, dec'd. 31 March 1831. JANE L. GRAHAM, apptd. gdn. of Jenny Brent Graham, James Watson Graham and George Richard Graham, orphs. of George Graham, dec'd. 26 May 1831. CATHARINE FUNK, chosen gdn. of Eliza Funk, orph. of Adam Funk, dec'd. 23 August 1831.
