Thanks Pat. Do you know which records would reflect placement of orphans? No early records that I have ever seen show placement of minors except in cases where they are placed by the Overseers of the Poor, either because they are orphans or because the parent could no longer care for them. In those cases the binding orders appeared in the Order Books. Unlike modern day placement of minors in foster care or adoption, those practices were not handled as they are now. Children were often taken in by relatives and others without a formal court agreement. The county became involved via the Overseers of the Poor only when necessary. Thanks Pat. Looks like the only shot is to check Order Books. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Duncan" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, July 01, 2008 1:46 PM Subject: Re: [VAFAUQUI] James McCormick > No early records that I have ever seen show placement of minors except in > cases where they are placed by the Overseers of the Poor, either because > they are orphans or because the parent could no longer care for them.
