Patrick Payne has researched the Paynes of Virginia for many years and has a DNA Project on them. First, my 9th great grandparents are John Payne, Sr that married Margaret . Some say she was a Robinson and some a Jennings. John Payne, Sr of Red House died ca 1690 in Old Rappahannock Co., Va. I descend from their son John Payne, Jr that married Anne Walker daughter of Col. John Walker by his first wife who is unknown. He married secondly to Sarah, WIDOW of Col. Henry Fleete. Patrick mentions "that the lineage claiming descent from John Payne (1615-1689/90) of Virginia likely descend from the Paynes of Huntingdonshire based on the 1622 will of Robert Payne, Citizen and Salter of London, where he names his brother, Florentine Payne, and a nephew, John Withers ("my sisters son"). Florentine came to Virginia at some point prior to 1652 and became a Burgess, representing Elizabeth City County. He was also a ship captain and formed a business with Richard Lee, the immigrant ancestor of the illustrious Lee's of Virginia. John Payne's family also had close ties to the Lee's. John's son, William Payne (d. 1698), willed that his children go immediately to "Col. Lee's" upon his death. Anyway, long story short, it certainly appears that the ancestry of that particular Virginia branch of the Paynes can claim Huntingdonshire as their ancestral home." Some of the Lee's are also descendants of my 9th great grandparents Martha Eltonhead and Edwin Conway, Sr. Marianne Dillow Illinois
