    1. Re: [VAFAUQUI] James Jett ca 1735 and Elizabeth ?
    2. I found this but I can't vouch for it... Marianne Dillow ************************************************************************************************************************************************** JAMES Jett was the father of William Jett, 1763-1851, Virginia militia during the Revolutionary War, whose sons emigrated to Illinois. Our JAMES Jett was the son of the Peter Jett who died in King George County, Virginia, in 1758. Court records show that this Peter’s estate was divided among his widow, who received her one-third allowance; and five children, who received equal shares of the remaining two thirds. Two of the children were still minors, so Ann Jett (probably the widow) was appointed guardian, with Thomas Jett as bondsman. (Was this the notable Col. Thomas Jett?) The adult children were JAMES, the oldest; William, and Mary. Page 18 of “Jett Trails Revisited” (JTR) shows that the Peter Jett who died in King George County in 1758 was married to Rebecca Bowen. I doubt it. It also shows that his son James Jett was born in 1743; this is incorrect, because we know that James was an adult by 1758. It confuses this James Jett with the James Jett who died in Culpeper County, Virginia, in about 1805. The Culpeper James Jett was the son of John Jett, one of the King George County/ Stafford County “Muddy Creek” Jetts (more on that, in a later post) who then moved to Culpeper County in the 1740s. JAMES Jett of Fauquier County leased land from Lord Fairfax in 1763, by which time he was married and had a son (William). This would be consistent with him having reached the age of 26 – in other words, a birthdate in about 1737. There is another James Jett lurking in early Virginia: JTR shows a James Jett, also born in King George County, died in 1795, as the son of John Jett and Ann Wells. He is supposed to have fathered (in 1792, only three years before his death) a son, Francis Jett, who died in Bond County in 1859. (Page 45, JTR.) There is no indication of the source for this record, and it doesn’t make much sense. What is the lineage of Peter Jett, father of my JAMES Jett? JTR (Page 18) shows Peter is the son of John Jett and Gladis Spillman – this John Jett being the son of William Jett and grandson of the immigrant Peter Jett. Again, I doubt it. JTR shows that this Gladis Spillman Jett died in 1778, but the records show her estate probated in King George County by 1771, a more realistic date for someone married in about 1715 with children born in the 1720s. (JTR shows that Peter, born in 1710, was the oldest child of John and Gladis, married about 1715. Interesting.) Instead, I would suggest that this PETER Jett was the son of Francis Jett, brother of the John Jett who married Gladis. When Francis (son of William, grandson of Peter) died in about 1722, his (probably second) wife Elizabeth was appointed to administer his estate. However, by a 1724 chancery order, “Suspend is given to William Jett against Elizabeth Jett for himself, his brother PETER Jett, brother Francis Jett, sister Elizabeth Jett, sister Margaret Jett and his sister Ann Jett.” This PETER Jett is not listed in JTR (page 18), but he fits in there quite nicely, and the Peter Jett shown to be the son of John and Gladis doesn’t fit very well at all. The 1724 court order shows that William was the oldest son of Francis, which makes sense because Francis’s father was a William. It also makes sense that William’s son Thomas would be security for the guardianship of his uncle PETER’s minor children, who would be his cousins. Another reason it doesn’t make sense for this PETER to be the son of John and Gladis, is that Gladis did not die until 1771, when she left bequests to her sons John and Peter, and her grandson Peter, son of her son John. By 1771, the Peter who left five children had been dead for 13 years. The Peter Jett who married Rebecca Bowen was another of the “Muddy Creek” Jetts. He leased land in King George County in 1737 for his life and the life of his wife Rebecca and his son Francis. This Peter died in 1784, survived by sons Francis and William. He may be the Peter who was the son of John and Gladis, since he was still living in 1771 when Gladis died. Also, in 1767 a Peter Jett was appointed guardian for a John Bowen in King George County. This is more consistent with the Peter who died in 1784 being married to Rebecca Bowen, rather than the Peter who died in 1758 being married to her. 3. Wow! that was fast. Thank you Marrianne. This supports my idea that James father was Peter Jett and that Peter's father was Francis who married Sarah Saxton/Ashton.
