For those who might find this information helpful: In a chancery case Carter v. McArtor 1877-001, found on the Library of Virginia website, a man named John B. Latham was questioned as to his age, residence and occupation. He replied that he was born 17th August 1823 and that he was engaged in the sale of merchandise in Upperville, Virginia in March 1844 (the time in question). Hope this helps someone. Susan B.
