In the Fauquier County chancery case Admr of Landon Carter v. John A. Carter, etc. 1910-005 [found on the Library of Virginia website] there is the following information in image number 51: "1856 June 20: To cash paid Landon Carter, his expenses etc for taking up negro woman Mary (belonging to the Family) taking her to Warrenton & selling her $50" Also: "1856 June 17 By proceeds of sale of Negro woman Mary & her child $1050.00" The Landon Carter above mentioned appears to be a direct descendant of a John Carter of Fauquier Co. My ancestor, William Legg, was an overseer in 1774 on the plantation of a Landon Carter. William Legg was b. bef 1759 in Prince William Co, VA and died 22 Jul 1833 in Culpeper Co, VA. This must be an later Landon Carter that you mention in 1856. This Landon Carter diary has much good information on the people of Fauquier Co, VA. Jack P. Greene, The Diary of Col.
