Hi, all, A friend alerted me to the posts concerning the existence of maps for Fauquier and other counties in the region. Some of you already know that I am in the process of platting all the original (and a few subsequent) land grants in Fauquier County. It goes slower than I would like, for many reasons, but still, it is coming along quite nicely, and I am in the process of preparing to publish a first edition. Profits, if any, will go to the Fauquier Heritage & Preservation Society, as the original participants (John Gott, Beth Mitchell, Triplett Russell) in the project intended, so any notices about the project here will not be of profit to me. I have not publicized the project much because I didn't want to be bombarded with requests for information while I was trying to do the work, which is tedious, at best. According to responses I received from members of this list last year, I hope to use a "field book" format so that it is easier for researchers to carry it around and use it while driving around the county. I am actively working on getting the final format put together and to the printer. Meanwhile, I am now amenable to responding to limited requests about land grant locations. >>> PLEASE NOTE: These are original Fairfax NN land grants and a few colonial government grants and NOT DEEDS of property transfer to subsequent owners. Neither are they leases, such as leases in the Manor of Leeds. Leases will only appear as a possible neighboring property (if next to the Manor, for instance), but not as an item of primary focus of the project. <<< If you want to get a general idea of where an ORIGINAL GRANT in Fauquier was probably located, and how it related to natural boundaries and other grantee's land tracts, you may email me at nupshaw@compuserve.com. I will not send you a plat or map, as the whole idea of the project is to raise money for the Society, so you will have to do that yourself or wait for the publication. However, I will be glad to provide enough information for you to get a good idea of where the land was and who the neighbors were, if we have the grant in our database. In addition, I'm thinking, in a later post, I will provide a list of the grants that have been included in the project, so that, if you happen to have found something that none of us have found, we can add it to our database and plat map. I believe we have most of Fauquier covered, except for a small bit in the extreme SE corner, for which I am still searching for grants. If you have any of these, then check the list I will post later, and if I do not have it, then send me the reference information so that I can find it, add it to the database and get it platted and located. BTW, if you have been to the John K. Gott library, and used a set of notebooks containing grants for the Northern Neck, you do not need to notify me of anything you found there. We have already processed those records. Please be patient if you send me a request for grant location information. My schedule can be erratic at times (I still work FT in the software industry). I will try to at least acknowledge your request when it comes in, and then it will be a mostly first-in-first-out process. However, if a certain tract poses a problem for some reason, I may let it wait until I decide how best to address the query. Sincerely, Nancy Upshaw No virus found in this outgoing message.
