    2. Town of Fincastle, Virginia was established in 1772 and named after Lord Botetourt's home in England. The county was created from Botetourt County in 1772. It became extinct in 1776 when it was divided to form Montgomery, Washington and Kentucky [now the state of Kentucky] counties. Botetourt County was formed from Augusta County in 1769, Fincastle was the county seat, and a part of Rockbridge County was added later. Montgomery County was formed from Fincastle County in 1776, and parts of Botetourt and Pulaski Counties were added later. Washington County formed from Fincastle County in 1776, and a part of Montgomery County was added later. Kentucky County was created from Fincastle Co 1776. Kentucky County became extinct in November 1780 when it was divided into Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln Counties. I read the Fauquier Co Va, tax records for the latter part of the 1700';s. I bless the fellow who did the tax records. He named the Father, then in another column he named the sons that the father was paying taxes for. I assume that the assessor most likely assessed the neighborhood at the same time as this would save time so that may be one way to check the neighbors. Jan In a message dated 7/8/2010 3:08:40 P.M.
