Renee Schaeffer and onnie Berry have done quite a bit of work on the Emmons and it is on Rootsweb. Daniel had a daughter named Ellen by the slave Nancy or Caroline who were owned y his brother-in-law Thomas Burrage. After Thomas died, Daniel bought Ellen, er mother, and three other slaves. One of the male slaves was an Indian named ashington. He later married Ellen. Daniel married Thomas' widow, Eliza Withers urrage. Most of the other Burrage's lived in Winston County, MS. While in MS, Daniel sold or gave his slaves to his son-in-law, Henry Crofton. enry moved to Hempstead County, Arkansas around 1864 and took the slaves with im, including Ellen and Washington. Ellen's mother remained with Daniel until he slaves were freed, then she moved to Kemper County, MS. I haven't made a connection with the Brown's, but I'll let you know if I do. According to a court case found in the Culpeper County CH, Andrew left Mary abt. 1 Oct 1863 and went to PA where he committed bigamy and married an unknown woman. Soon after he settled somewhere in MD. Andrew left Mary with 5 children, not named in the court case and still unknown at this time. The case where Mary is asking for a divorce, alimony, and child support gives the following information: Decree entered 18 Nov 1871 1st to deterine the amount of money or value of other property to which the Plaintiff (Mary Brown) is or may be entitled as alimony, and the amount or value of property necessary to support the said plaintiff and her family. 2nd an account of the real and personal assets of the defendant, Andrew J. Brown. 3rd an account of the acts and doings of Charles Short, late Sheriff of Culpeper County, as the Committee Adm'r of John Brown, dec'd. 4th an account of the acts and doings of James W. Morton, Adm'r, d. b. n. (according to Black's Law Dictionary administration de bonis non, Latin for "of the goods not administered." An administration granted for the purpose of settling the remainder of an estate that was not administered by the former executor or administrator.) upon the estate of his decedent. also an account of the outstanding debts against the estate of John Brown. >From Mary's deposition (30 Aug 1866): Your Oratrix Mary F. Brown by James M. Spindle, her next friend she is the wife of Andrew Jackson Brown late of Culpeper County she married him on or about the 17th day of July 1853 and has been a true and faithful wife, that she has borne to him five children, born in wedlock A.J Brown left her in Culpeper on or about the 1st day of October 1863 and went beyond the limits of VA into the state of PA and is now residing in the state of MD, that he unlawfully intermarried with a woman whose name is not known in the state of PA A.J. Brown recently wrote a letter on or about the 6th of August 1866 to Elizabeth Suitor of Culpeper in which he proposed to sell his property in Culpeper and requests Elizabeth to meet him in Alexandria and that he proposes to make no provisions for his wife and children (Elizabeth is his sister who married William A. Soutter, son of William R. and Susan (Fewell) Soutter. William R. Soutter's second wife was Sarah Francis M. Brown, another sister of A.J. Brown, this is who I descend from.)
