Hey List, When I was recently up to Warrenton, Va at the Library, I found some books and two have been sent to me via inter library loan to NC. One is a gold mine of information! It was written by Olive V. Jones in 1970 and she is talking about the little village of Sumerduck fifty years ago. There's a little map of people's houses, churches, stores, etc. I think that some of the lines that June, Renee and Denise have been researching may be mentioned in her writings. I am going to begin sharing the names and relationships to see if any of you have these lines or can help put some of the pieces together. I'll give the page number with some of the information. There is one page between pages 22 and 23 that is a diagram of the houses, stores, etc. in what was called village of SUMERDUCK. I can't draw it but will start at top and work down. COLUMBUS & GUSSIE HOLMES [a house] WILLIAM JACKSON JONES [his house] then across the road UNION CHURCH, AUNT SALLIE's HOUSE [then behinde AUNT SALLIE'S HOUSE is something called THE CANAL.] Just below UNION CHURCH was J. HACKLEY JONES [house]. Nest below is something called THE BROADWALK then across the road THE SANTA CLAUS HOUS.E Below these on that same road is something called WELL [it's just a well]. Just below the WELL on left of road is MILLS HOUSE & SHOP and across the road was JONES STORE Traveling southward on that road next is TAYLOR STORE on left then off to right is TULLOS HOUSE. Next down on left is LOG SCHOOLHOUSE and across road was EMBREY MEMORIAL CHURCH. Last thing listed on left of same road was NEW SCHOOLHOUSE. I will start at beginning of the book and try to begin to construct this village that was on SUMMERDUCK RUN. If any of you live in this area, would greatly appreciate trying to find where these places were [are] today with use of street, road and highway names. I am looking to find where the land was that was first owned by ALEXANDER McCONCHIE and wife ANN before 1800 on SUMMERDUCK RUN. Thanks, Amanda PS Tim, if you're still on this list, you would be of great help. I'd like to know if the GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH is near any of this?
Grove Baptist Church can easily be reached by taking the following routes: >From The South (Fredericksburg, VA area) Take I-95 to Route 17 north. Go approximately 12 miles, take a right onto Goldvein Rd. The Church entrance will be on the left. >From The West (Warrenton, Culpeper areas) - Route 29 south to Route 17 south for approximately 15 miles, left onto Goldvein Rd. The Church entrance will be on the right. Snip............................... Thanks, Amanda PS Tim, if you're still on this list, you would be of great help. Amanda: I know you have been looking for your McConchie ancestor property in Summerduck for quite some time. I just looked at The Fauquier County map by Eugene Scheel and on there near Summerduck is a McConchie Graveyard. It located on Rogers Ford Rd. (Rt. 632). Rogers Ford Road is off Summerduck Rd just south of Summerduck. This graveyard could be on early McConchie property. Embrey Church and graveyard are also on the map, as well as Jone's Store that you mentioned. You asked about a Grove Church. I did find one on the map (Est.1863) closer to Goldvein than Summerduck, although the distance between Summerduck and Goldvein is 5 miles or less. Goldvein may have been called Grove Church at one time. Other names on the map include: Embrey, Kemper, Partlow's Mill, Smith's Store, Summerduck School (possibly New School you mentioned?), Royall's Mill. I am just passing this on for your information. Estelle
What I did when I had a map of Fauquier with a list of leases and people wanted to share it ..was to scan. It was too large for one so I divided it in to about ten pieces. Scanned it to my email and then sent it to those who wanted it. Maybe you might be able to do that. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amanda Douglass" <aadouglass@nc.rr.com> To: <vafauqui@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 26, 2010 12:55 PM Subject: [VAFAUQUI] The Little Village of Sumerduck written by Olive V.
