    2. Charlotte Brown
    3. Jackie Thanks for the reference and yes, Catherine (Murray) Carter (daughter of Ralph and Catherine (Byrne) Murray - my 2nd great grandparents) is my great grand Aunt. I had not located the 1855 court suit but was given a land deed dated 1845 which did not validate the children. The info you referenced below matches the children I have located thru 1850 and 1860 census: Alice L. Carter, Edward Carter, Ella O. Carter, and Mary Katherine Carter. I also have that Landon and Catherine (Murray) Carter was listed as the guardian of Juliett A. Murray who married George W. Grayson. After Catherine's death, 3 of the children were living with George and Juliett Grayson. I am looking for any information about Brown families in Fauquier around 1800. Specifically, the family of Roda Brown. Marriage records indicate that Roda Brown (married Jesse Gray 23 March 1818 in Fauquier County) is the daughter of Thaddeus Brown and Frances Thaddeus. Does anyone know more about any of these folks? Has any connection ever been made between the Browns of early Fauquier and the Brown families in Westmoreland County around 1650--1700? Browns, Grays and Popes all settled along Machodoc Creek in Westmoreland County around 1650. Thanks.

    1. [VAFAUQUI] Looking For Extra Info On Conway, Thacker and Stanard

    3. On my previous posting I should have included the following.  Someone sent me pages 116 and 117 from the book  entitled " A Place In Time". This consists of my family information but the proceeding pages before p 116 and the ones after p 117 would include family  info also. This book is on Middlesex Co., Va 1650-1750 by Darrett B. and Anita H. Rutman.   Apparently after my 8th great grandfather , Henry Thacker, Sr   died my grandmother Eltonhead Conway Thacker married William Stanard. On p. 117 of this book it states: Family, Friends and Neighbors:   When, in 1681 Henry (this is Henry thacker, JR that married Elizabeth Payne, my next grandparents).. Edwin and Martha Thacker went to court to obtain a guardian other than her new husband (William Stanard) , it was obviously because the children .. or at least Henry (JR) , the eldest at eighteen ---- suspected that their new stepfather would act against their interest. In 1686 Henry. on behalf of himself and the other children, brought suit against Stanard for his mishandling of their estates, and Stanard fled the county. " It goes on to mention other families in Midddlesex County too. Page 16 mentions Elias Edmonds concerning children and education and mentions CONNOWAY's (Conway) letter concerning the death of parents in this society. Marianne Dillow Illinois.

    2. Jackie, Had a little chuckle with your George sneeking into your database as a child of The "Councillor", Robert and Pricilla CARTER, as I have Eliza (sure it was short for Elizabeth), Robert married to Francis "Anne" TASKER, the daughter of Judge Benjamin TASKER and a Charles. Only I do not have a reference on my Charles, so maybe your George and my Charles have been sneeking around together! Another interesting note concerning Robert CARTER, Jr. that I was just reading in "Fauquier During The Proprietorship" where Robert CARTER, Jr., described as an infant in 1710 having 902 acres and 10 acres on the north side of Occoquan river and a little below the falls being granted to him through the efforts of his father. He must have been wealthy at the time of his early death at about 28 years------------------ Sources: "Some Prominent Virginia Families" and Liber 31, folio 90 5 Oct. 1760 TASKER, BENJAMIN, Jr., of Annapolis, Esq. 2. http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/pds/becomingamer/economies/text5/landoncarterdiary.pdf Born in August 1710 into one of the wealthiest planter families of Virginia, Landon Carter was landed gentry. Educated in London with his brothers, Carter returned at age sixteen and learned plantation management from his father, Robert “King” Carter. At age twenty-two, events propelled Carter into his adulthood: his father died, leaving him eight plantations, and he married the first of his three wives (all of whom died before 1758). As was the norm for Virginia gentry, Carter became involved in public affairs, as a justice of the peace, member of the county court, and later, commander of the militia. In 1752 he was elected to the Virginia legislature, the House of Burgesses.

I came in on this discussion a bit late - but a Fauquier county court case that I have looked at (1976-012) shows as a plaintiff Charles Landon Carter Erc. and defendcents the Administrators of the estate of John Carter. If you look up the case it lists Charles Landon Carter and his brother Moore Fauntleroy Carter (sons of Landdon Carter Jr. and Judith Fauntleroy as suing their cousins - the administrators of John Carter ....The administrators are listed as Landon Carter, Wormley Carter and Robert Carter - but the case goes on to list the heirs of John Carter deceased as Robert, Landon, Anne Beale, John and Edward Carter and his wife Jane. Edward Carter would not be a son of John Carter - He married his cousin Jane who was his daughter. Also listed as heirs but infants under the age 21 are George Carter, William Fitzhugh Carter, Edward Carter Jr., Betsy Carter and Matilda Carter. Those children are all listed as having Robert Carter as a guardian. The John Carter deceased would be John of Sudely the son of Landon Carter and Elizabeth Wormley. This side of the family was embroiled in a long standing court case begun about 1796 which if my memory serves me right outlasted many of those who were involved and well into the 1820s or early 1830s. 2. I finished going over some of the material we have been discussing and hopefully I am not to confused. If anyone can set me straight, please do. First, this is for Mary Ann and is only a thought out of desperation to find out who the parents of your Colonel John CARTER of Rap. Rv. in Lancaster County who died: 1699 at "Nominy". Not knowing his birth year, I thought I'd throw this out as a possibility. Robert CARTER and his wife Pricilla BLADEN were married about 1725. Robert estimated birth year is ca 1704 and he died about 1732 at "Nominy" leaving 3 children that I know of born between 1726 and the time of his death in 1732 at about age 28. If you figure in having a child about every two years they had time to have at lease one more child or even two if Pricilla was expecting at the time of Robert's death. You may already have explored this family; but if not it might turn up something for you. This was the son of Robert "King" CARTER of "Corotoman Plantation", Lancaster County, Virginia. I now have 7 Landon CARTERs. Thanks to everyone for the lawsuit information. I did not have any of John CARTER of "Sudley" and his wife, Janet HAMILTION's children. For sure Robert, Landon and Wormley are their children. However, as heirs of this John CARTER are Anne Beale, John and Edward CARTER, also his children. Edward CARTER, probably not; but who are his parents? CARTER the fun family, Chocy

    3. Okay I found my Robert info. I do have four children listed for Robert and Priscilla but I could be talked out of one of them very easily. The four I have are 1.) Robert married to Francis Ann Tasker 2.) Elizabeth married to Francis Willis 3.) Priscilla who married William James Weir 4.) George - for whom I have no information. Did George sneak into my database? Jackie Chocybrown@aol.com wrote: > I finished going over some of the material we have been discussing and > hopefully I am not to confused. 3. Well I sure don't have this proven - but I believe Edward Carter is the son of Charles Carter and Mary Walker Carter (who is the daughter of Charles Carter and Mary Walker.) I THINK. If I am right and you have Carters in your direct line you might want to be looking for extra toes, fingers etc. Now I have to go look at Robert. 3. Marianne - I show the child married to Sarah Edwards simply as Wormley or Wormeley (you will find the second as an alternative spelling. I don't think I have ever seen him referred to as Landon Wormley. As for Charles Landon - you will sometimes see people refer to him as Charles Landon Beale Carter. I have never found any documentation for that and indeed all of his signatures are either C.L., Charles Landon or I have found one document that is C. Landon Carter. I believe he was probably actually born in Fauquier Co. since that is where the family estate was - but his later estate of Ridgeville apparently spanned the two counties a bit. Charles and Ann Steuart Carter had 8 children - and their names just add to the family pattern - Susan Catherine, Judith Anne, Hebe, Charles Landon, Mary Fauntleroy, Marion Steuart, Duncan Steuart and Ellen Moore Carter. Fauntleroy was carried as a middle name in this family for several generations. 3. My paternal great grand Aunt Catherine E. Murray married Landon L. Carter. >From the Murray Family Bible transcribed for Lena Mae Tavenner Brown (my paternal grandmother): "Catharine Murray - daughter of Ralph and Catharine, his wife, was born August 24th, 1818". Added to this entry was Lena's handwriting " married Maj Landon L Carter". (copied from a paper clipping printed in the Richmond Enquirer which was placed in the bible - "DIED: Of typhoid fever, at his resident in Fauquier County, Virginia, Major Landon L Carter, aged 37 years 5 months and 24 days.. Maj. Carter was a highly respectable farmer, a good neighbor, a kind and affectionate husband. He has left a wife and five small children to mourn his loss.". In September 1834, Landon provided the bond for their guardian Juliet A. Murray to marry George W. Grayson (according to the Loudoun County, Va. Marriages 1760-1850). According to the U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules 1850-1880: Landon Carter died of typhoid fever at his residence in Ashby's District, Fauquier Co., Va. He was sick for 6 days prior to his death. >From the Murray Bible "Catharine Murray daughter of Ralph and Catharine, his wife, departed this life July 12th 1854 aged 35 years 10 months and 19 days" Catherine was head of household when the 1850 census was taken in Ashby's District in Fauquier Co., Virginia. After Catherine's death, her children (Alice, Edward, Ella and Mary Catherine) were listed in 1860 census living with George W. and Juliet (Murray) Grayson and their family in Warren Co., Virginia. Based on the info found to date this Landon was born abt Sept 1812 and married Nov 18, 1837. Mentioned in a land deed (44,401) filed by L.L. Carter probated 26 Mar 1845 that he indebted to the orphans of Presley Carter, named as: Martha Carter, Leonidas Carter, Landon Carter, Catherine Carter, Edward Carter, Presley H.L. Carter & Joseph G. Carter, some of monies due in connection with property in Loudoun Co. VA. (Not sure if this deed is for the same L.L. Carter or not) Could any of this info tie back to the Landon Carters referenced in the emails? I have not located any further info on my great grand Aunt Catherine's husband Landon L. Carter. Apparently there was a subsequent dispute between Landon Jr. and John as to how the land should be divided between them. A later court suit (actually a continuation of the first but filed separately) gives further details. Landon Jr. and John apparently came to an agreement but it was never carried out before John's death - and that was when things got hairy. But I do think the answer to the original question will be found within this branch of the family. There are enough John's to go around. Jackie marianne dillow wrote: > I came in late too....
