    1. [VAFAUQUI] John Grant Lacey Russell 2
    2. Fred Burton Samson
    3. Earlier, I forwarded an inquiry as to John Grant, Lacey or a Russell. Due to email, I though the following some additional background on John Grant (-1836), Revolutionary War soldier and my SAR line, might help better understand my two questions and request for information. I firmly believe family history should be based on substantive records; wills, deed, bonds, minister returns, or other Court record; and not on name association or looking for a name association. In some cases as demonstrated by Robert N. Grant in his work with the Wrights and Grants, use of the Colonial naming convention can provide an inferential approach to tracing a family’s history. Lets briefly discuss John Grant (-1836), my line to the SAR and used successfully for at least three DAR memberships. John Grant’s (-1836) line The relationship of Samuel Russell Grant, John Addison Grant and Robert Franklin Grant is well established by Wills. The relation of Samuel Russell Grant (1786-1861) to John Grant (-1836) to the best of my information was first summarized by Grant and Samson (1974)—their direct line. They describe this relationship on three Court records; the tithable list, voting list, and property on the Manors of Leeds (see below for a concern on this record). John Grant’s (-1836) family John Grant family, based on Court records, include John Jr., Samuel Russell, William, Harvey, Anna, James H., and probably Jemima. I say “probably” for Jemima in that her marriage bond is signed by James (presumably James H.) and not John. If you look at a larger picture, tax and census records (using census, tax, Schreiner-Yantis and Love 1987 and other Court records) show three relevant Grant families: (1) an “early” family of James, John, and Daniel (nicely described in the book “The Paynes of Virginia”); 2) John Sr., John Jr., Daniel, Joseph, William and Isaac; and 3) a “latter” family of John Grant Sr., John Grant Jr., Samuel Russell and so on. John Grant’s (-1836) parents I have yet to uncover a Court record (a Will in particular) that documents who were John Grant’s (-1836) parents. Some suggest John Grant and Lydia Barbee. The connection of John/Lydia I have found is based on a single narrow thread of evidence linking them as a whiteness to a Will (Jane Hurst) in Stafford County, through a series of Court documents, to Hurst being a neighbor to John, John, and Daniel Grant on the Manor of Leeds. The material I am familiar with (Grant and Samson 1974, Russell 1978, Hirsch 1994) describe but one Grant on the Manor of Leeds. In fact, there are at least four Grants on the Manor (Samson 2009). a) The Payne and James, John and Daniel Grant Lease. I believe this Grant group includes the John Grant who died in 1817 with Paynes handling the estate. It is a strong possibility that Daniel Grant (1758-1831) who served in the Revolutionary War is this “Daniel.” The Paynes and Grants interacted for over 100 years, Daniel as a name is common to this line, but does not appear anywhere in property, offspring, or other record for John Grant (-1836). b) The John, John and Daniel of 6 November 1771 Lease. This group appears as a “blip” in the various Court and Census records and I have yet to find a Court or other substantive record that identifies the lineage of this Grant group to John Grant (-1836). c) Samuel Russell Grant (1786-1861). Grant and Samson (1974) use the 1771 Lease to like Samuel to John Grant (-1836). The issue is that mapping the location (Samson 2009) and tracing the Lease histories does not provide strong evidence for this relationship based on the 1771 Lease as suggested by Grant and Samson (1974). d) John Grant (-1836) resided late in his life on the Lease originally granted to James, Malon, and Manual Lacey. James H. Grant in his property record also mentions the Lacey Lease. This does not establish a link to a Lacey as a wife to John Grant. e) Some believe family histories are important such as Grant and Samson (1974). Samuel Russell Grant (1786-1861) appears to have been a literate person—he sold a library among other items when they left the Manor. Samuel told his children/grandchildren that his father was from Scotland. My view is that a very strong possibility exists that John Grant (-1836), Revolutionary War veteran, came to America with thousands of others from Scotland sometime between 1745-1755. John Grant’s (-1836) wife. I know of no Court record that has identified his wife. Grant and Samson (1974) suggested an unknown Lacey, and latter in the summary, a Russell. A recent note on Rootsweb list a Lydia Vilet Lacey as his wife but no Court or other record is provided. I have always associated Lydia or Vilet with the John Grant of Bedford County, Virginia due to a Parish record. On the other hand, a “Lacey” would be great in that Effie L Pattee working for Grace Grant in the 1930s suggested a Lacey. Let us assume that the Colonial naming convention is of value. “Russell” appears in four Grant generations (Samuel on), Alexander in two generations, and “Lacey” or “Lacy” never appears. The Grant line is very strong in use of the naming convention and would lead to the suggestion that John Grant’s (-1836) wife was a Russell, thus my first question—is there a Court record that identifies John Grant’s wife, a Lacey or a Russell or both? Daniel Grant (1758-1831) Daniel Grant (1758-1831) is an enigma. Hirsch (1994) has several what I view as significant errors in describing the military service of John Grant (-1836), he served three years and not six, was not at the Battle of Cowpens (1781), and so on. No evidence exists in the transcribed NARA military records of either Daniel or John Grant that they were brothers (Samson 2009). Clearly, the birth date of William Grant, son of John and Lydia Grant, differs by nine years from the William Grant that served in the Revolutionary War.. Second, Daniel Grant (1758-1831) is not part of the property trail or other Court record associated with the John Grant (-1836) line. He simply drops out of the picture of any Grant line until surfacing somewhat latter in poverty in Kentucky. John Grant (-1790) No Grant researcher has yet to offer a Court record that John Grant (-1790 and son of John Grant (-1762), who according to work by Effie L. Pattee and funded by Grace Grant in the 1930s (with appropriate letter in Grant and Samson 1974) died in 1790 according to a “Wright Bible,” ever married. My second question as to whether any Court record existed as to his marriage was to see in the name “Russell” came via a marriage by John Grant (-1790). Thus, again, I am interested in a substantive evidence, a Court record, that would document who John Grant (-1836) married and second, in any Court record that John Grant (-1790) married. In sum, 1) the record from current to John Grant (-1836), Revolutionary War soldier, is very strong as evident in Court and or other public records (one SAR and three DAR memberships that I am aware of). 2) It is very likely the John Grant (-1836), Revolutionary War soldier, came from Scotland, and married either before coming to the Colony or after, a Russell, unless a Court record surfaces to show a Lacey or both a Russell and a Lacey. 3) At this point, John Grant (-1790) is a dead end in terms of a Grant lineage. I hope the above helps to better explain my two questions and any Court record that might help answer either would be appreciated. Thank you for the email! Fred B. Samson .

    3. A history of one William/John Grant line in Virginia that may have began with a headright in 1711 is summarized in a recent book *A Northern Neck Grant Family* (2009) (ISBN 1449540791) by Fred B. Samson and published through Amazon Createspace, Seattle. At least two important issues remained to be answered. John Grant was born before 1740 and died in 1790. He held deeds in County of Prince William, sold movable property (1764) in King George County, and listed in the personal property tax list for Spotsylvania County in 1787. The colonial naming convention is very strong and an infant’s name was carefully selected by the parents and followed that of the grandparents, honoring maternal and paternal lines evenly. My line to SAR membership is through John Grant (-1836) who late in life lived on a Lease for Lives on the Manor of Leeds in Fauquier County granted originally to Mayland, Manual, and James Lacy/Lacey. One of John Grant’s children is Samuel Russell Grant (1786-1861). Russell then appears as a name in the Grants for three generations. This suggests that John Grant’s (-1836) father may have married a Russell and that Samuel Russell Grant’s grandmother may have been a Russell. No substantive record (deed, Will, bond, return or so on) has been uncovered by any Grant researcher that John Grant (-1790) married. Nor has any Grant researcher been able to provide a substantive record as to who John Grant (-1836) married. The book *A Northern Neck Grant Family* (2009) reviews three earlier works on the earlier Grants (Grant and Samson 1974, Russell 1978, and Hirsch 1994). Grant and Samson (1974) suggest John Grant (-1790) married a Russell and John Grant (-1836) married a Lacy (or Lacey). One additional factor that might influence the identification of who either John Grant (-1790) or John Grant (-1836) may have married is that Samuel Russell Grant 1) went south of the Manor of Leeds (one of four Grants involved in Leases) to Culpeper, 2) there his last son John Addison was born, and 3) then went north to the National Road that took them to Ohio. One could suggest and only suggest they went south for the birth to visit or live with relatives—perhaps either a Russell or a Lacy/Lacey—before going north. Any information on the marriage or even an available candidate to have married either John Grant (-1790) (or even proof of marriage) or John Grant (-1836) would be appreciated. Thank you. Fred B. Samson.

    1. [VAFAUQUI] Shenandoah National Park honored with new exhibit
    2. pifox
    3. FRONT ROYAL -- The Warren Heritage Society is honoring the 75th anniversary of Shenandoah National Park with a new exhibit chronicling the toil of the people who brought the park to fruition. The exhibit tells the story of not just the park's creators, but also the local residents who made great sacrifices for the park to be established, said Patrick Farris, executive director of the Warren Heritage Society. The Warren Heritage Society exhibit is both a celebration and commemoration, Farris said, intended to give a full presentation of how the park came to be. "The creation of the park itself was not without pain," Farris said. The park's scenic mountain views and myriad hiking trails are now open to the public, but the land once consisted of privately owned farms and small communities. Numerous families were relocated from their centuries-old homeplaces in the mountains so Shenandoah National Park could be born, Farris said. "It is so much more than just acreage -- many people had lived on the land they had to sacrifice for generations, not for a few years, but dating well back 150 years or more," Farris said. The state government worked with many families to acquire the land, Farris said, but some properties were condemned and then taken by the state through the use of eminent domain. Residents were moved off the mountains to resettlement communities scattered across the region, including one in nearby Flint Hill in Rappahannock County. Families often had to leave behind family cemeteries, some of which can still be seen from the main roads of the park, Farris said. Plans for acquiring land for the park accelerated when President Franklin D. Roosevelt needed to find jobs for members of the newly created Civilian Conservation Corps, Farris said. The exhibit features a CCC member uniform from the short-lived Dismal Hollow Camp. Warren Heritage Society archivist Judy Pfeiffer spent four months culling private collections and archives to produce the exhibit. "We just collect and collect and collect, and then someone says, 'Go,'" Pfeiffer said. The exhibit also highlights some of the original homes and buildings -- such as the historic Simpson House and Belmont Winery -- that were demolished in order to create the wilderness for the park. Warren County led a funding drive, and residents donated $6 for 1 acre of park land to help the state raise money for the park, Pfeiffer said. The exhibit includes a list of donor names, and visitors are encouraged to search for their ancestors and place a star by the name, Pfeiffer said. The book "Answer at once: Letters of Mountain Families in Shenandoah National Park, 1934-1938," will be also be available at the Ivy Lodge Gift Shop on Chester Street. The book, a collection of letters written by families whose land was condemned for the park, was edited by Katrina M. Powell. The Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive exhibit will be on display through summer 2011. For more information visit www.warrenheritagesociety.org, or call 636-1446. 1. [VAFAUQUI] Warner Family and Brent Family

    3. I am trying to identify the husband of Polly Caynor, d/o Matthew Caynor and Ann Hinson. In court minutes dated 7/29/1834 Matthew's children are named and one of his daughters was listed as "Polly Caynor now Polly Warner". I cannot find a marriage record for her or any other document pertaining to this daughter, however, I have been successful in finding information on all of Matthew's other children. Does it mean her husband was no longer living or at least not living with her since it did not mention his name. Of the five daughters named, three daughters had no husband listed but two did even though I have marriage records for them. Is anyone researching the Warner Family or have any suggestions that I could use in helping me identify Polly's spouse. They probably married 1810-1820. I would also like to know more about Margaret "Peggy" Caynor who married Charles Brent. According to their marriage record his father was William but I cannot find anything on the Brent family either. I do have a court record for Margaret saying that Charles had left her and gone to Kentucky with another women. I also found her in the 1850 census with who is probably her daughter - Ann Lloyd and husband James. Nothing after 1850. Thanks for your help. Chocy Late in the morning on 21 April 2010, an electronic transformer in downtown Richmond failed, and one of the consequences was damage to the server that runs the Library of Virginia's Web site. Our folks have got parts of the site back online because they have access to a backup version of the site, but users may find that some of the clicks and databases will remain slow or disfunctional until the server can be repaired or replaced. 1. [VAFAUQUI] Duncan/Wright/James
    2. I am trying to prove that Mary Duncan, daughter of Joseph Duncan, who married Capt. James Wright, is the mother of Elizabeth (Betsy) Wright who married Capt. John James. I can prove that James Wright is the father, but I can’ t prove that Mary Duncan is the mother. The problem appears to be a discrepancy of about 1 1/2 years between birth and marriage dates. Mary Duncan married Capt James Wright after Dec. 8, 1763 in Fauquier (according to Gott’s Marriage Bonds, bondsman Joseph Duncan). But according to Baird’s tombstone Inscriptions, daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) Wright James died Feb 28, 1828 (this date also from Kelly Bible), age 65 yrs 9 mos and 28 days. This works out to a birthdate of 4/30 or 5/1/1762 (depending on which calculator you use) or roughly 1 ½ years before the marriage. Did Capt. James Wright have a first wife? Are these dates proven wrong somewhere else? Does anyone have confirmation of Betsy’s mother? Any help at all would be appreciated. Libby

She and I did a lot of Fauquier Co. research together. I just got word today that she passed away. I've heard Sandy speak of you often and I know that she had been and may still be involved in different census transcription projects, etc. and had worked with you on projects. I thought I should let someone in the family history portion of her life know that she had passed away. I doubt that her family would know who to contact in that regard. Her obit is here: http://bordwinefuneralhome.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=489 &Itemid=31 She was a great gal and I was real fortunate to be her friend. She will truly be missed. Thought you should know. Best Regards, Sandy Adams

    1. [VAFAUQUI] A Tale of Two Graveyards
    2. pifox
    3. After generations of neglect, once-forgotten African-American cemeteries come into their own. By Michael Lee Pope Thursday, March 25, 2010 City-owned maintenance vehicles were parked over one African-American graveyard. A gas station was constructed over the other. Together, the two long-neglected black cemeteries represent a lost chapter of Alexandrias history, one thats only now being written. But confronting the unsavory behavior from the past has not been easy, and its created some dissention among the living. "Its a sad and shameful story," said Ferdinand Day, one of the citys preeminent civil-rights leaders. "And it shows a kind of Jim Crow attitude that prevailed in this city for many years." At Freedmans Cemetery, opinions vary about how to memorialize the dead. A consultant hired by the city has moved beyond a design approved in 2008 in favor of a more modern design. And a recent discovery of forgotten African-American burial sites at Fort Ward wont be completely excavated for four years because of a lack of funding. Together, the two sites still retain a sense of uncertainty about the best way to honor the men and women buried there. "This is a city that was the largest slave-trading center on the East Coast, and I think that influenced the values of the people who ran the city for many years," said Glenn Eugster, who has been pressing the city to recognize the burials at Fort Ward since 2008. "It took a long time for that to change, but theres now finally theres a recognition that these graves are important." for the rest of the article http://connectionnewspapers.com/article.asp?article=339217&paper=59&cat=104

    1. [VAFAUQUI] Land of Edwin Conway, JR, Mentioned in England in 1698 Will Richmond Co., Va
    2. marianne dillow
    3. I guess I sent this to too many mailing lists at one time as it isn't coming through so I will try it again. Edwin Conway, JR, .....son of Edwin Conway, Sr. and Martha Eltonhead ..... said in his will dated 7 Sep 1698 in Richmond County, Virginia  the following : " Item: I give and bequeath unto my dear and loving wife Elizabeth Conway, all my estate real and personal not hereby given away before. All and every part and parcel that may or can be found in Virginia,.... ENGLAND,..... or elsewhere, and I doe hereby make and ordain my saide wife Elizabeth, full and sole Executrix of all hereby given ot her. Requesting her to pay all my debts." I am hoping someone might have a clue as to where in England Edwin Conway., JR.'s land might have been. Edwin Conway, SR came from Worcester, England. And many say Edward Conway and Dorothy Tracy is his parents but Edward's will does not name Edwin Conway, Sr that married Martha Eltonhead  as a son as many believe.  However, many Conway researchers on this Conway line believe that Edwin Conway, Sr  does come from this Conway family in England but from another male member other than Edward Conway that married Dorothy Tracy.  Some research is now being done in England on this branch of Conway's. This is why I have been so intent in trying to find the estate of Edwin Conway, SR in 1659-1661 hoping it might show a land description or associations to prove this one way or the other.  Land in England would be very important from these Virginia records if they are available. 1. [VAFAUQUI] Need Help With Records Attempting To Find The Correct Death Date of Edwin Conway, Sr.
    2. marianne dillow
    3. Could anyone with expertise please explain this to me. Edwin Conway, Sr that married Martha Eltonhead is my 9th great grandparents. His death date is much sooner than Rev. Horace Hayden gave in the Glassell book. Here are two more records found at the Library of Virginia on reels.....: Patent Title Connaway[Conway], Edwin.                         Publication 26 September 1678. Gen. note                         Formerly granted to Edwin Conway decd., by patent                         bearing date Novr 30, 1659. Other Format Available                         on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42,                         reels 1-41. Note Location: Lancaster County.                         Description: 1650 acres in the Counties of Lancaster                         and Northumberland, Begg. at the Westward branch of                         Curratoman River. Adjoining the land of Colo Cod.                         Source: Land Office Patents No. 6, 1666-1679 (pt.1                         & 2 p.1-692), p. 635 (Reel 6).                         *****************************************************************************************  Patent Title Connaway, Edwin. Publication 26                         September 1675. Other Format Available on microfilm.                         Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41.                         Related See also the following surname(s): Conaway.                         Note Location: Northumberland County.                         Description: 1650 acres formerly gtd. by patt. to                         Edwin Connaway, decd. Nov. 30, 1659. Beg.g &c. on                         the S. Et. side of the Western branch of Curratoman                         River. In the counties of Lancaster and Northumberland.                         Source: Land Office Patents No. 6, 1666-1679 (pt.1                         & 2 p.1-692), p. 635 (Reel 6).                   ************************************************************************************************ Yet, I found these two records earlier. I guess they recorded later. Looks like Edwin Sr. died ca 1659 although I have a record of 1660/61 in these records Edwin Conway, Sr was still living according to this date:.... Source:  Va Col. Abstracts, Vol 10: Edwin CONNOWAY, gent., 2500 acres adj. land of John Meredith, etc Dated James Citty last of October 1657" Signed : Samuel Matthews, W. Clayborne, sec....  Edwin Connoway of Lanc gent, sells to Sam Persax of London,  marryner, the above land, excepting 200 acres sold to Will Gordon. Dated: Jan 1660/61 Signed: Edwin Connoway Wi: John Stuart, Edward Dale Rec: 1st Feb 1660/61 And ................................................................................................................ This is from Lancaster County Minute records.. not Hayden in the Glassell book who has the death record wrong....  (Source:  Va Col.  Abstracts--Lancaster County. p. 11) Lancaster Court  Session 14  March 1660/61. Minute Bk. p. 141.  Com. of Administration on the Est. of Mr. Edwin Connoway dec' to Henry Corbyn. Any help in understanding these dates and when Edwin Conway, Sr actually died would be very much appreciated. I have Lancaster and Northumberland counties in Va in these records besides the different dates. Marianne Dillow Illinois.
