To: vafauqui@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, June 20, 2010, 8:54 PM I am jealous of all those early records that Marianne Dillow has collected for this line. For what it's worth, my Merry ancestors found their way to Barren County in the early 1800s, from Orange County, Virginia, by way of the part of northern Kentucky just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. It was there in Barren County that they met my McClanahan ancestors, from Augusta County, Virginia's early Scots-Irish settlement near the county seat of Staunton. Kentucky reminded them of the "Barrens" (meadowlands) of Scotland, and of course the county seat of Glasgow was named after the Scottish city. This area is very near Mammoth Cave. These ancestors did not meet up with my Jett ancestors, from Fauquier County, until they all found themselves in Bond County, Illinois in the 1830s. I am fairly certain that the McClanahan homestead land was part of a land grant related to service in the French and Indian War (or possibly the 1774 "Lord Dunmore's War" between the Virginia militia and the Indians). The Merry relocation to northern Kentucky was because of a land grant from the French and Indian War, but I think the move to Barren County by a second generation was simply because there was land available there; it had become the frontier. The Merrys were not Scots-Irish. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to VAFAUQUI-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

In Anderson Chenault Quisenberry's book in the Appendix he has a couple of letters from I. M. Quesenberry to someone who I can't tell who he is writing to. One is dated 23 Jan 1888 Hisevile, Ky. He has written to his uncle Solomon Quesenberry who was 80 years old to get the best history of the family that he can. It says my father is dead and some of our family is in Richmond, Missouri. My grandfather , Page Quesenberry , was born in Va. and his brother Zachariah Quesenberry was a Methodist preacher, my grandfather moved from Va to Boyle Co., Ky and lived at Perryville to Barren County in 1803. in 1803. The other letter is dated 1 Oct 1888 Parksville, Boyle Co., Ky. The letter is written by I. M. Quesenberry. He bought a place there and says Page Quesenberry was born in Fauquier or Culpeper Co., Va. in 1780 and his father James born in 1690, as my uncle Solomon now 81 years old thinks... Note" he was probably born 1730 or later. My grandfather Page Quesenberry moved from Va with Zachariah, his brother, and they stopped at Perryville, Ky. and lived there one year and then moved to Barren Co., Ky. , 5 miles from Glasgow. Since Zachariah was a Methodost preacher he left Barren Co., Ky in 1840 and moved to Richmond, Mo.. Zachariah died died 23 Sep 1864 at the age of 95 years. he was born in 1769. He left a widowed daughter, Mrs. Bryant, in Richmond. Mo. and a son John P. Quesenberry who was a merchant ther. He states that James Quesenberry was born in Va in 1690. His two sons were Zachariah in 1769 and Page in 1690. Page had three sons, Joseph, Abel and Solomon. Joseph died young. Abel was born in 1815 and died in 1883 leaving one daughter, Mrs. Hanks, of Hart Co., Ky. and three sons , Y. M. Quesenberry, of Gordon City, Kansas, J. W. Quesenberry of Hiseville, Ky. Ky, and myself (I. M. Quesenbery). Solomon was born in 1806 and now lives near Glasgow, Ky. and has one son, I. W. Queseberry and four daughters living.. one single, Lucinda.. and three married.. Mrs. Kinnaird of Adair Co., Ky; Mrs. Breeding of El Paso, Tx.; and Mrs. Wood of Hiseville, Ky. Zachariah had a daughter and two sons, Joseph and John. Joseph died young in Richmond Co., Mo and John is a prosperous mechant there. The daughter Mrs. Bryant lives with her brother John. After those two letters I must say that I have seen . this group in Barren Co., Ky but never knew how they fit into the Quisenberry's of Va. On my Moses Cushenberry in Bourbon Co. Ky and sons in Fayette Co., Ky they are all around the Rev. James Quisenberry left Va to Ky in 1783 and 1783 is the first record found in Ky of my Moses Cushenberry and that surname has been spellled so many ways including Quisenberry. Hi all, I'm not a Quesenberry descendant, but I have about 50 of them in my tree, mostly from Carroll County, VA. (Yes, they usually spell it with the "e" down there.) The first Quesenberry I ever met said immediately "My mother was a Hurst." Turned out that his Hurst line was originally from Loudoun County, while my came from Northumberland County, although one line did show up in Fauquier. But we were related though the Smith family from Prince William anyway. Getting all this? Now if you could find a connection between the Quisenberrys and my Underwood ancestors from Barren County, KY, I would be well on my way to proving that everybody is related to everybody! Ain't genealogy fun?! Bill Hurst (from Fairfax)

Moses Cushenbery and Ann unknown are my grandparents. I descend from their son Daniel who married Sarah (Sallie) Davis daughter of William Davis of Culpeper County. I believe my Moses is a descendant of the Quisenberry family of Va and since he died 1792 in Ky and was from Va he would have been born around or before Aaron Quisenberry that married Joyce Dudley. He is older than the other Moses Quisenberry in that family. Some people in the past got the two mixed up. Since I posted below I looked at the books I have by Anderson Chenault Quisenberry. In one of them it says that Rev. James Quisenberry came from Orange County, Va and in 1783 he removed to Ky. He is the son of Aaron Quisenbery and Joyce Dudley. Rev. James Quisenberry is also the brother of Moses (not mine) and their brother John Quisenberry who was in Clark County and moved to Warren Co.,Ky in 1808. My Moses three sons, Daniel, Elijah and Vincent Cushenberry moved to Warren and Allen Co.,Ky ca 1810. Allen was formed from Warren. Seems like they stayed together and knew the same people. Also, 1783 is important. It is the same year in the Quisenberry book that says that Rev. James Quisenberry came to Ky. and 1783 is the first record of my Moses Cushenbery in Ky too. Could they have come from Va to Ky together ? Marianne Dillow. **************************************************************************************************************************************** I have looked through my records and Moses Cushenberry that died in 1792 in Bourbon Co., Ky was in 1787 at the settlement of Limestone. Then in that same year he bought 16 1/2 acres in the town of Washington, then in Bourbon County, but now in Mason County. 10 Oct 1787 Bourbon County, Ky Court Records Deed Book A, page 139. Then in 1787 Moses purchased 150 acres from Simon Kenton on south Fork Licking Creek in Bourbon County. Maybe that would help in finding more records as he was from Virginia and the first record found was 1783 where he signed a petition entitled " West Side of Laurel Mountains Inhabitants to the President of the Continental Congress" which was a plea for the formation of a new state. . My 5th great grandparents are Moses Cushenberry and wife Ann unknown. Moses was born in Virginia. He was in Kentucky in Fayette and Bourbon counties as early as 1783. He died in Bourbon Co., Ky in 1792 where he left his inventory. The Cushenberry name has been spelled several ways in records in Kentucky. Moses settled in the Limestone area in the town of Washington and Licking Creek and the land eventually became Mason Co., Ky although it was in Fayette and Bourbon counties when Moses lived there. It is believed Moses was a part of the Virginia Quisenbery family. Below are relationships that shows the Quisenberry family and intermarriages and the Traveling Church were known to my Moses Quisenberry that died 1792 in Bourbon Co., Ky. Moses and Ann's children are: (1) John Cushenberry married Rebecca Dowden10 Dec 1791. (2) William Cushenberry... had a daughter Rachel who married Richard Brown. (3) Elijah Cusenberry married Polly unknown..... their daughter Obedience married (i) Johnson Ellis, (ii) Johnson J. Cockerell. (4) Vincent Cushenberry m. Mary Davis dau of William Davis 4 May 1791 in Bourbon Co., Ky.. (5) Daniel Cushenberry m. Sally Davis dau of William Davis. (6) Mary Cushenberry m. Nicholas Lindsay. (7) Elizabeth Cushenberry m. Zachariah Ross. (8) Anna Cushenberry m. Vachel Lindsay. (9) Rachel Cushenberry m. John F. Pullin (Pulliam). John Quisenberry was also in Fayette Co., Va in a 1788 deed bounded by Thomas Burris and Robert McMillion and the record was acknowledged in Orange Co., Va as well as in Ky. Also Rev. James Quisenberry was in Fayette Co., Ky son of Aaron Quisenberry and Joyce Dudley. He was born 1759 in Spotsylvania Co., Va and died in Clark Co., Ky in 1830. He m. 1st Jane Burris dau of Thomas Burris and Frances Tandy and 2nd to Chloe Shipp. My Moses Cushenberry's children moved on to Warren Co., Ky and Allen Co., Ky formed from Warren County. Aaron Quisenberry was also in the 1820 Warren County records. He is the grandson of Aaron Quisenberry and Joyce Dudley. Moses Quisenbery son of Aaron and Joyce Dudley was confused with my Moses Cushenberry for several years. But my Moses was older born ca 1720-1740 time frame as he died in 1792. Anderson Chenault. Quisenberry in his book entitled " Genealogical Memoranda of the Quisenberry Family" on page 199 in theappendix says this about my line of Moses Cushenberry.... " From the "Burnt Records" of Fayette County" " The Burnt Records , so called, of Fayette County, Kentucky, are copies of mutilated papers partially saved from the flames when the Fayette County Clerk's Office was destroyed bt fire prior to the year 1800. In April 1888, I examined these records personally, and found where my great-grandfather Rev. James Quisenberry, bought 200 acres of land in 1788, in (now) Clark county, from his brother-in-law, Rev. Andrew Tribble. And in the same book (Vol I, page 213) it is recorded that in 1795 Elijah Cushenberry bought land on David's Fork, Fayette County, from Elijah Craig." " Also, the following entries from the records succeeding the "burnt records". for the period between 1795 and 1800, viz: i. District Court, Book D, Elijah Cosenberry, deed to Elijah Craig, page 133. ii. . District Court, Book D, Lewis Craig to Lewis Custenberry, page 166........ (I don't know who Lewis Custenberry is ) iii. Circuit Court, Book B, Lewis Craig to Elijag Crousenberry, page 688 iv. County Court, Book C, Elijah Custenberry to R. R. Hunt, page 308 v. County Court, Book E, Wm. Cusenberry to Charles Robinson, page 381 vi. Marriage Register, book 1, page 4, John Pullen to Rachel Cushenberry Nov 6, 1804, by Rev. Ambrose Dudley. Elijah Cushenberry certifies that his sister Rachel is of lawful age. Book 1, page 10, Obedience Custenberry to Johnathan Ellis , Nov 29, 1807, by Rev. R. R. Hunt " Who these people were, and where they went to when the left Fayette county, in 1810, I do not know ......( my line went to Warren and Allen Co., Ky.. !! )........ the variations in the spelling .of the name is due to the lawyer who drew up the papers or of the clerks who recorded them, for none of the parties themselves could write at first, though Elijah seems subsequently to have learned to do so, and then, i nstead of "making his mark" he signed Cusennberry."..... A.C. Q..... Anderson Cheanault Quisenberry I feel that Aaron Quisenberry and Joyce Dudley named their son Moses after mine. Their other son is Rev. James Quisenberry who married (1) Jane Burruis (2) Chloe Shipp. Also, Aaron Quisenberry, Jr married Sally Ellis. Also... John Quisenberry brother to Rev James Quisenberry and son of Aaron Quisenberry and Joyce Dudley moved from Clark Co, Ky to Warren County, Ky in 1808 about the same time my bunch went there ca 1810. So in my research which started in the 1980's on Moses Cushenberry continues. If anyone can contribute to what I have it would be very much appreciated. Marianne Dillow Illinois
Sorry but I haven't found anything but maybe someone else has some information. :) Marianne Dillow Jun 19, 2010 09:28:17 AM, vafauqui@rootsweb.com wrote: >I belong to the Fauqui list, but I am not a Conway. I belong to the Fauqui list, but I am not a Conway. I've been reading all the Conway mail though as my grgrgrandmother was Ann Eliza Conway Jordan, daughter of Edward Jordan. Could it be that the Conway's were somehow connected to the Jordan's? Not sure when Ann Eliza Conway Jordan was born, but she married in 1826 in Lunnenburg. Va. jsorensen4@cfl.rr.com
Hi Ginny, I can add some Va names with my Cushenberry''s in Bourbon co., Ky. Fayette was formed from it and many are there too and some went on to Clark Co., Ky. My Cushenberry males are the father Moses and his sons, Daniel (my grandfather), Elijah, Vincent, William and John. I have several dates on my Cushenberry's there but will add other Va names but I centered in those close to my family.. Fayette Co., Ky 1787 Tax List A ; William Cave, Sr; William Cave, Jr, Toliver Craig, John Graves, Thos. Graves, John Linsey (Lindsay), Leban (Laban) Shipp and Colby Shipp on 19 May 1787. 8 June 1787 : Rawleigh Chinn, Smith Darnell and John Tandy with my Moses Coosenberry (sp LOL ) 15 June 1787 : William Ellis, Thomas Ellis, Joseph McCann Neel McCann, and John Graves. On Fayette Co., Ky 1787 Tax List B is James Quisenberry and John Quisenberry. Aaron Bledsoe and his wife Mary and Thomas Burris were there. My grandfather William Davis from Culpeper Co, Va was there. And Miles W. Conway was there as a Trustee with Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton. This is just a small example of the ones from Va that helped settle those counties in Ky. Furthermore, a case in the Virginia Court of Appeals in 1793 recites the facts as follows; that Raleigh Chinn by Will in or about 1741 devised the residue of a certain tract of land for which he had a patent from Thomas, Lord Fairfax, to his son, Rawleigh Chinn and " he died in or about 1756, intestate, leaving issue as co-inheritresses, two infant daughters, Anne and Catherine, the former of whom intermarried with McCarty and the latter with Christian, before they attained their ages of 21 years.
