Estelle, OVJ will probably solve much for us but you were right about GROVE CHURCH being in GOLD VIEW. LOL! page 11 "In 1915 a man by name of ROBERT CALVIN EMBREY who lived near the Rappahannock River purposed in his heart by the will of God to build a church in Sumerduck. It was to be a NEW SCHOOL BAPTIST CHURCH like the GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH in GOLD VIEW. My father helped to build that church. I have been a member there for 44 years. The church went for years without a cemetery, but now has one located in the back a distance from the church. People attended not only the Primitive Baptist Church but also the GROVE and Mt. HOLLY CHURCH before the NEW SCHOOL BAPTIST CHURCH was built in Sumerduck. Mt. HOLLY CHURCH is located about three miles up the REMINGTON road from Sumerduck and has a large cemetery nearby." Amanda
What I did when I had a map of Fauquier with a list of leases and people wanted to share it ..was to scan. It was too large for one so I divided it in to about ten pieces. Scanned it to my email and then sent it to those who wanted it. Maybe you might be able to do that. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amanda Douglass" <aadouglass@nc.rr.com> To: <vafauqui@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 26, 2010 12:55 PM Subject: [VAFAUQUI] The Little Village of Sumerduck written by Olive V. Yeah Estelle! Thank you. All this just seems to be connecting. I hope my cousin is reading all this and making map for us. I'm familiar with the SCHEEL map. My cousin told me that there was a C. JONES on that map or maybe a CHARLES JONES. We have tried and tried to solve who the CHARLES JONES was that married ANN CHILDS, granddaughter of ALEXANDER McCONCHIE. I can't help but think that CHARLES JONES may end up being related to the HENRY BROADUS JONES line. The little narrative/book may provide some really good leads. I think I know the McConchie graveyard you speak of but it is no longer in existence. A relative just pointed to a piece of land off in a field to left of someone's house that was reputed to have been the OLD McConchie graveyard. There's no sign of any graves, stones, etc. but land records probably mentioned a graveyard at one time early on. When I go back in August, I am going to do more research on that property. Amanda
Dear Amanda: I am really enjoying your notebook summaries of Summerduck. Mostly because we always drove through there on the way to Goldvein to visit relatives. Since we moved to Georgia we don't get that way very often anymore. A trip to Virginia is focused in Front Royal and Warrenton, time permitting. Thanks for sharing Miss Jones book. Maybe the J. Hackley Jones is the son of Henry Broadus Jones and Margaret Allen they had a son named Hackley Jones born 1870. June
List, I mistyped the email contact and it bounced back. So here is next part. I don't wish to violate any copyright laws and this little publication has "Copyright James J. Durnan, Jr. 1970". Does anyone have line of Durnan? Is it o.k. for me to quote information from certain pages of this publication? It's not even a book. It's pages in a notebook. There is no publishing company. I think I'm o.k. to do this but if somebody sees that I'm doing something wrong, please give a shout. Page 1 OVJ simply gives background on the "little village of Sumerduck in Fauquier County, Virginia..." "Sumerduck as orginially Summerduck, having derived its name from Summerduck Run which in turn was so called because of the many wild duck which in the summer thereon or lay upon its banks or based upon the sand."....."The RUN flowed about half a mile where Sumerduck is located on the main road leading to Remington and the Morrisville Road. The RUN flowed across the Morrisville Road, which was known to us as the Church Road, because the Primitive Baptish Church stood beside the road in Sumerduck and is till standing there today pratically the same. The front of the Church faces the main road, the east side faces the Church Road." Page after 31 "ABOUT THE AUTHOR" She was Miss Olive Jones and she had a twin brother Ottaway Chester Jones. Both born April 2, 1906 "in the home then occupied by her beloved parents, and today knows as AUNT SALLIE'S HOUSE." Page 3 OVJ says "my grandfather William Holmes". She was talking about the long and difficult trip made from Sumerduck to Fredericksburg at Christmas when the roads where so deep in mud that it was an overnight trip for mules and horses to pull buggies or wagons. "Speaking of the families which mainly made up the village of Sumerduck, for years they were the JONES, MILLS, McCONCHIES, and SMITHS. Surrounding were families of EMBREYS, CURTIS, BROOKS, HOLMES, JACOBS, and others scattered here and there". "HENRY BROADUS JONES, who was my grandfather, lived in the house called the SANTA CLAUS HOUSE and which later also bore the name of the HOUSE of SEVEN GABLES. He married the former MARGARET ALLEN who was a daughter of CAPT. JOHN FIELD ALLEN, of Fauquier Co. VA.. They had a family of nine boys and one little girl who died at the age of three years. There were three sets of twins in the family. Romulus and Remus, James and Henry, Daisy and Dahlia were the names of the twins." I believe CAPT. JOHN FIELD ALLEN married ELEANOR STIGLER who was sister of ELIZABETH BETSY STIGLER m ROBERT KING McCONCHIE, my direct line. And I also think John Field Allen was son of a JAMES ALLEN who was possibly a BROTHER of THOMAS ALLEN who married ESTHER FIELD. THOMAS ALLEN and ESTHER FIELD had son HENRY ALLEN m. CATHERINE McCONCHIE, d/o ALEXANDER McCONCHIE. CATHERINE [McCONCHIE] FIELD would have have been an AUNT of Robert King McConchie. THOUGHT: JAMES ALLEN might also be the name with LOTT HACKLEY and ALEXANDER McCONCHIE who did the 1785 estate inventory of ROBERT KNOX. To be continued...Amanda
Amanda: I know you have been looking for your McConchie ancestor property in Summerduck for quite some time. I just looked at The Fauquier County map by Eugene Scheel and on there near Summerduck is a McConchie Graveyard. It located on Rogers Ford Rd. (Rt. 632). Rogers Ford Road is off Summerduck Rd just south of Summerduck. This graveyard could be on early McConchie property. Embrey Church and graveyard are also on the map, as well as Jone's Store that you mentioned. You asked about a Grove Church. I did find one on the map (Est.1863) closer to Goldvein than Summerduck, although the distance between Summerduck and Goldvein is 5 miles or less. Goldvein may have been called Grove Church at one time. Other names on the map include: Embrey, Kemper, Partlow's Mill, Smith's Store, Summerduck School (possibly New School you mentioned?), Royall's Mill. I am just passing this on for your information. Estelle
Grove Baptist Church can easily be reached by taking the following routes: >From The South (Fredericksburg, VA area) Take I-95 to Route 17 north. Go approximately 12 miles, take a right onto Goldvein Rd. The Church entrance will be on the left. >From The West (Warrenton, Culpeper areas) - Route 29 south to Route 17 south for approximately 15 miles, left onto Goldvein Rd. The Church entrance will be on the right. Snip............................... Thanks, Amanda PS Tim, if you're still on this list, you would be of great help. I'd like to know if the GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH is near any of this?
Hey List, When I was recently up to Warrenton, Va at the Library, I found some books and two have been sent to me via inter library loan to NC. One is a gold mine of information! It was written by Olive V. Jones in 1970 and she is talking about the little village of Sumerduck fifty years ago. There's a little map of people's houses, churches, stores, etc. I think that some of the lines that June, Renee and Denise have been researching may be mentioned in her writings. I am going to begin sharing the names and relationships to see if any of you have these lines or can help put some of the pieces together. I'll give the page number with some of the information. There is one page between pages 22 and 23 that is a diagram of the houses, stores, etc. in what was called village of SUMERDUCK. I can't draw it but will start at top and work down. COLUMBUS & GUSSIE HOLMES [a house] WILLIAM JACKSON JONES [his house] then across the road UNION CHURCH, AUNT SALLIE's HOUSE [then behinde AUNT SALLIE'S HOUSE is something called THE CANAL.] Just below UNION CHURCH was J. HACKLEY JONES [house]. Nest below is something called THE BROADWALK then across the road THE SANTA CLAUS HOUS.E Below these on that same road is something called WELL [it's just a well]. Just below the WELL on left of road is MILLS HOUSE & SHOP and across the road was JONES STORE Traveling southward on that road next is TAYLOR STORE on left then off to right is TULLOS HOUSE. Next down on left is LOG SCHOOLHOUSE and across road was EMBREY MEMORIAL CHURCH. Last thing listed on left of same road was NEW SCHOOLHOUSE. I will start at beginning of the book and try to begin to construct this village that was on SUMMERDUCK RUN. If any of you live in this area, would greatly appreciate trying to find where these places were [are] today with use of street, road and highway names. I am looking to find where the land was that was first owned by ALEXANDER McCONCHIE and wife ANN before 1800 on SUMMERDUCK RUN. Thanks, Amanda PS Tim, if you're still on this list, you would be of great help. I'd like to know if the GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH is near any of this?
Well, it looks like John Cushenberry (son of Moses Cushenberry, my grandfather), and Simon Kenton were brother-in-laws. I never knew that before. , Martha Dowden and Simon Kenton 16 May 1787 Rebecca Dowden and John Cushonbery 15 Dec 1791... Moses Cushenberry's son. Bourbon County, Kentucky Marriage Records, 1786-1800 Elizabeth Cushenberry and Zachariah Ross, 10 Jul 1795 ..... Moses Cushenberry's daughter. Simon Kenton was born at the headwaters of Mill Run in the Bull Run Mountains, in what is now Fauquier County, Virginia (birthplace was part of Prince William County at time of his birth prior to formation of Fauquier in 1759) to Mark Kenton Sr. (an immigrant from Ireland) and Mary Miller Kenton. And Moses Cushenberry was at Bourbon Co., Ky. Village of Washington and Settlement of Limestone in 1786-1787 when Miles W. Conway and Daniel Boone were Trustees and Simon Kenton was there. Also..... I didn't think I would be posting on this today but it seems Moses Cushenberry died before 1792. It must have been his estate that was challenged in court. New record: Kenton, Simon..... Martha, wife of Moses Cushenbery had a Bargain & Sale (B-2; Wife's exam: B-145 & 146).... 2 Dec 1789; wife's examination 23 Aug 1790. In May 1792 the court oversaw Moses estate since there was no will. It was recorded June 1792. Anne his wife qualified with Nicholas Lindsay her son-in-law and William Quesenberry (her son) , her securities and gave bond, The original estate record is all I have and it is just a few lines in Order Book A May 1792.. it says... 'The Administration of the estate of Moses Quesenberry is granted to Anne Quesenberry who came into Court and qualified and with Nicholas Lindsay (her son-in-law).. and William Quesenberry (her son) her securities gave Bond under penalty of L240 conditioned as the law directs. I have a record from the original where it names , what he owned .. the only names on it is ...Note on Coleman Theobolds 300 Salt.. Ditto on Psar ? Burris... featherbed ,, names Dan Durbin?.. A. Easter.. James Kenney. Then... At a Court for Bourbon County, Ky. at the courthouse on Tuesday, 19 Jan 1790, Indentutre of bargain and sale from Simon Kenton and Marrha (Anne) his wife to Moses Cushenberry was proved by the oaths of Josiah Dickson, Elijah Cushenberry & Vincent Cushenberry, witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded John Edwards , C. B. C. (Ky Genealogist, Vol. 6, p. 66) Now..... in the Ky. Gazette dated 15 Sep 1800 in Bourbon County Aug 1800 , James Kenny complained against all of Moses and Ann's children and Miles W. Conway and Simon Kenton were defendants. .... " James Kenny complaint againft John Cussenbury, William Cussenbury, Elijah Cussenbury, Vincent Cussenbury, Daniel Cussenbury (infant under the age off twenty-one years), Lindsey and Mary his wife, Lindsey and Betsey his wife.. Ross and Anna his wife, and Rachel Cussenbury ( an infant under the age of twenty-one years)... Cussenbury, widow of said Moses, deceased, Miles W. Conway and Simon Kenton, defendants. The article was incorrect as Betsy married Zachariah Ross and Anna married Vachel Lindsay. I have never understood this part except Anne lived until ca 1800. Another record: Josiah Dickson, Elijah Cushenbery and Vincent Cushenbery 150 acres on NE side of South Fork of Licking, part of the Preemption of Craig and Johnston assignees of John May, assignee of James Galloway: in the lines of Dickson and Craig & Johnston; Martha Kenton's exam by Alexander D. Thanks. I don't believe this is the same John Edmonds. The John Edmonds (1737-1798) I am working on lived in Fauquier. I was interested in your Edmonds posting. I am researching them also, but when I went to the info I had in FTM for them, this was all I could find. I will get on the ball and check my notes for you. >From the website, "The Virginians" by John Pritchett John Flood Edmunds [2346.1.1.1.3.2] (-1797) married Lucy Gray in Southampton County 19 October 1769. John Edmunds was Brunswick County justice (1776), sheriff (1777, 1780-1), and militia colonel. He paid taxes on 16 slaves in Brunswick County in 1782. I forgot to mention that the Octavia Edmonds I am referring to was in the household of Elias Edmonds in the 1850 Fauquier census. This Octavia is found in the 1850 census of Fauquier. She is in none of the Edmonds trees that I have ever seen. William inherited part of John's estate in Northern Fauquier County and subsequently sold the farm around 1817. The correspondence ties them to the family but is vague as to the exact relationship. There seem to be few active Fauquier Edmonds researchers. The family has a lot of well documented information (and some not so well documented) out there. This has allowed me to exclude a lot of possibilities but because John's son William apparently left Fauquier after he sold the farm he is rarely mentioned. William's male children are not documented at all (except by me) as far as I can tell. I am hoping someone researching other associtated lines maybe has run across a stray Edmonds specifically Thomas, John, William (Billy) or Octavia. Billy and a cousin James Henry Edmonds travel to Central MO (after a stop in Kanawha County WVA) with Mark Chilton about 1840. I don't think that Billy and Octavia were uncle and niece. This Octavia is found in the 1850 census of Fauquier. She is in none of the Edmonds trees that I have ever seen. She was born in 1810 and in the family corespondence Billy is naming his first born daughter "after her". There are several references made to update Octavia "Tave" on Billy's status in Missouri. William's brothers included Elias, George Washington, and John Edmonds along with sisters Anne (Nancy), Catherine, Frances, Margaret (Peggy) and Sophia. The family lived near Upperville in Northern Fauquier. William was born 1763 and his wife was Sally (LNU). He had verified sons John, Thomas and daughters Jane (m. Wesley Brown) and Elizabeth (m. Francis Rollow). 1810 Fauquier census suggests there are four more children. I am trying to link two Edmonds strays to William and Sally. Specifically, a son William (Billy) and a daughter Octavia. I have pretty good indirect evidence but need something more specific to make the positive connection. William inherited part of John's estate in Northern Fauquier County and subsequently sold the farm around 1817. I lose the family at that time as far as records go until 1839 when I pick Billy and Octavia up in both records and family correspondence. Billy marries and lives out his life there, James Henry after a lot of trials an tribulations returns to Fauquier some years later.
