Town of Fincastle, Virginia was established in 1772 and named after Lord Botetourt's home in England. The county was created from Botetourt County in 1772. It became extinct in 1776 when it was divided to form Montgomery, Washington and Kentucky [now the state of Kentucky] counties. Botetourt County was formed from Augusta County in 1769, Fincastle was the county seat, and a part of Rockbridge County was added later. Montgomery County was formed from Fincastle County in 1776, and parts of Botetourt and Pulaski Counties were added later. Washington County formed from Fincastle County in 1776, and a part of Montgomery County was added later. Kentucky County was created from Fincastle Co 1776. Kentucky County became extinct in November 1780 when it was divided into Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln Counties. Marianne, Rena Worthen who is webmistress for the Loudoun mailing list, is always mentioning her home area as the gateway to KY...and Fincastle is there in VA. I think she is webmistress for several lists in southwestern VA but I cant remember whick ones they are - maybe Botetourt Co, and/or Montgomery Co. Another way to search is: Go to http://usgenweb.org/ then Virginia you'll get http://vagenweb.org/ then click on VA files you'll get http://usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm *** then click on Click here for County Indexes and you will get a colorful chart http://usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm Drop down to the bottom and Click on Defunct Counties OR from the starred link *** Click on search Va http://www.usgwarchives.net/search/search.cgi/searchva.htm and you can select Fincastle as the county to search. ----- Original Message ----- From: <marlowest155@verizon.net> To: <vafauqui@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 10, 2010 10:37 PM Subject: Re: [VAFAUQUI] land records, maps- PS Would anyone know if there are any books on Fincastle County, Virginia before Ky became a state in 1792. Thanks June. I found one book that had different sections in it on Lincoln, Jefferson and Fayette in 1780 but my Moses Cushenberry grandfather that I believe is a Virginia Quisenberry was not in the 1780 records with other people he was associated with. The first record I have of him is 1783 where he was signing a petition for Virginia to form another state which became Kentucky. He was associated with people who were with the Traveling Church from Spotsylvania and Orange counties in Va. He was in Bourbon and Mason counties in Ky but they were formed from Fayette. One of his sons named John was a brother-in-law to Simon Kenton as they married Dowden sisters. If I can't find a record before 1783 I may have to find a male Cushenberry from our line that descends from Moses to do DNA testing as there are Quisenberry men who have tested their DNA and we could see if there is a match. I have proven four lines of my parents by DNA testing when there was no more records to be found on my family and the others could prove their lines by records. DNA testing is a great thing for brick walls if a DNA company has a project going on that surname. We have tested our DNA at Family Tree DNA in Houston. Hi Kathleen, I ordered the microfilm through the LDS Family History Center near me and read the microfilm when it came in about three to four weeks later. The folks at the Family History Centers are very helpful. If you don't have one near you, you can go online to find the nearest location of one to you. Nancy: Many thanks for taking on this project. Please make sure we are notified as to how to obtain the final product. thanks, Lyle Corder
Hi, all, A friend alerted me to the posts concerning the existence of maps for Fauquier and other counties in the region. Some of you already know that I am in the process of platting all the original (and a few subsequent) land grants in Fauquier County. It goes slower than I would like, for many reasons, but still, it is coming along quite nicely, and I am in the process of preparing to publish a first edition. Profits, if any, will go to the Fauquier Heritage & Preservation Society, as the original participants (John Gott, Beth Mitchell, Triplett Russell) in the project intended, so any notices about the project here will not be of profit to me. I have not publicized the project much because I didn't want to be bombarded with requests for information while I was trying to do the work, which is tedious, at best. According to responses I received from members of this list last year, I hope to use a "field book" format so that it is easier for researchers to carry it around and use it while driving around the county. I am actively working on getting the final format put together and to the printer. Meanwhile, I am now amenable to responding to limited requests about land grant locations. >>> PLEASE NOTE: These are original Fairfax NN land grants and a few colonial government grants and NOT DEEDS of property transfer to subsequent owners. Neither are they leases, such as leases in the Manor of Leeds. Leases will only appear as a possible neighboring property (if next to the Manor, for instance), but not as an item of primary focus of the project. <<< If you want to get a general idea of where an ORIGINAL GRANT in Fauquier was probably located, and how it related to natural boundaries and other grantee's land tracts, you may email me at nupshaw@compuserve.com. I will not send you a plat or map, as the whole idea of the project is to raise money for the Society, so you will have to do that yourself or wait for the publication. However, I will be glad to provide enough information for you to get a good idea of where the land was and who the neighbors were, if we have the grant in our database. In addition, I'm thinking, in a later post, I will provide a list of the grants that have been included in the project, so that, if you happen to have found something that none of us have found, we can add it to our database and plat map. I believe we have most of Fauquier covered, except for a small bit in the extreme SE corner, for which I am still searching for grants. If you have any of these, then check the list I will post later, and if I do not have it, then send me the reference information so that I can find it, add it to the database and get it platted and located. BTW, if you have been to the John K. Gott library, and used a set of notebooks containing grants for the Northern Neck, you do not need to notify me of anything you found there. We have already processed those records. Please be patient if you send me a request for grant location information. My schedule can be erratic at times (I still work FT in the software industry). I will try to at least acknowledge your request when it comes in, and then it will be a mostly first-in-first-out process. However, if a certain tract poses a problem for some reason, I may let it wait until I decide how best to address the query. Sincerely, Nancy Upshaw No virus found in this outgoing message. Those were different and separate from the Land Tax lists, which would not have listed the other taxable males in the household. The Personal Property Tax lists did not involve land. The lists, which were sent to the Auditor in Richmond, were in rough alphabetical order. Information about the Virginia Personal Property Tax lists can be found at: http://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/guides/rn3_persprop.htm Information about the Virginia Land Tax lists can be found at: http://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/guides/rn1_landtax.pdf Since many people only leased land or rented houses, they would not be listed as the owner on the tax list. I believe the records you refer to are the Personal Property Tax lists. Does anyone know how the above people may be related? I can fill in on the following: Mary, wife of Philemon Hensley was married to John Contee and then m#3 William Rogers her maiden name was Warren. (This William Rogers may have been a brother to John Rogers who was the father of the William Rogers that married a Francis in Stafford Co. - their son, Robert, married Joanna Warren, a daughter of Notley and Sarah Warren of Charles Co, MD. Supposedly Mary Warren Contee Hensley Rogers was a sister to Notley. John Warren mentioned in Ann Lynes will may have been a brother to Mary as well. Judith Warren (named in above will was a widow in 1715) Ruth

Need to locate Marriage Record for David Coffman & Mary Anne Lovell ca 1774-1775. A Marriage Bond would also suffice. Don't know if the County Records even existed, so a Church Record might be only source. Believe the Groom was Mennonite, but Bride was likely Presbyterian or Anglican. Any help will be appreciated. _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. There is the Josiah Dickinson map of the Leeds Manor leases. Last fall I recall some discussion here about a book being published, showing the location of these leases in greater detail. Does anyone know how that project is coming along? In Fauquier County, much of the land was owned by Lord Fairfax. It's not the ownership you want, it's the rent rolls and tenants. >>Are there any maps available showing ownership of land from 1700 - 1800 in Fauquier, King George, Stafford counties? Has anyone worked with land records to know who neighbors were? Ruth<<
