This article has nothing to do with genetic testing for genealogical purposes -- it deals with companies that try to predict likelihood of certain diseases, often based on family history submitted along with a DNA sample. _pifox@comcast.net_ (mailto:pifox@comcast.net) writes: Mail-in Genetic Testing Unreliable, Misleading MUST READ http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Wellness/consumer-dna-testing-notch/story?id=11 227092

My thanks to June for all the information sent. For the Vafauqui Rootsweb archives. ------------------------------------- The source for Albert's birth place has the wrong English county, Hertford whereas it was Essex, but over time this type of error can be expected. Adelaide Starr LEAN WINMILL 1897 - 1947 was the wife of Joseph Bassett WINMILL. Source 1930 census, albeit the entry is hard to read. They had a son about 1930 who had the same name as his father. GW Atlas is available from a number of resellers at abebooks.com starting at $75.00. If you're interested in old maps check out the Library of Congress (loc.gov). Click "Digital Collection" next page "Maps" then do a search like "fauquier." Some of the maps are huge files and will test your PC. Also, you might need a "plug in" for your graphic viewer to handle the format. It's all worth the effort. You just might find some GW survey maps. I haven't tried. > Heritage Books may have had this available at one time, but it's not in > their catalog now, nor can it be found on any bookseller website through > bookfinder.com. We now have a male tester for DNA that descends from Moses Cushenberry ( no matter how you spell it ) that died in 1792 in Bourbon Co., Ky. Other testers descend from Aaron Quisenberry, Sr. Now after 29 years of research we will finally know when the results come in if Moses is a Virginia Quisenberry or not. I am so glad we got a male tester from Moses. If others have a brick wall one might prove it by DNA testing through a male by a company who has that surname project. I have proven four lines by DNA testing when we ran out of records and others could prove their line and we matched DNA with them. Moses sons Vincent, Elijah and my Daniel left Bourbon, Fayette counties and was in the 1810 Warren County, Ky.census where the John A. Quisenberry family went to in 1808. John A. Quisenberry is a brother to Rev. James Quisenberry and the sons of Aaron Quisenberry, Sr who some say his wife is Joyce Gayle Dudley. Marianne Dillow Illinois
It was 1747, and Francis Jett needed a survey of two parcels of land he owned or intended to buy in the Northern Neck of Virginia. He hired a local teen-ager to do the job. It was some of the first paid work for the 15-year-old surveyor, who later went on to greater fame in other fields of employment. His name was George Washington. The details can be found with a Google Book search for “Journal of my Journey Over the Mountains,” subtitled “by George Washington, While Surveying for Lord Thomas Fairfax, Baron of Cameron, in the Northern Neck of Virginia, Beyond the Blue Ridge, in 1747-8.” The book edited by collector and Smithsonian benefactor J. M. Toner, M.D., was published in Albany, New York, in 1892. The book also includes earlier surveys in Culpeper County, Virginia – east of the Blue Ridge – that were done for individuals other than Lord Fairfax. The first parcel is described on page 75 of the book. My estimate of its size is about 320 acres, a half section. (I could be wrong.) The second parcel is described on Page 76, and its outline, as copied from the original Washington drawing, is on a facing page. It has an area of just over 45 acres, and there was a house located on it. The surveys done by George Washington immediately before and after the Francis Jett surveys were ordered by John Monroe; John Watts; Richard Roe; and Elizabeth Washington (apparently designating the third to which she was entitled as a widow). I believe all of these names can be traced to early settlers of Westmoreland County, where the Jett family ahd settled nearly 100 years earlier. Which Francis Jett was this? And where exactly was the land located? (There are no references to landmarks other than such boundary markers as hickory, oak, walnut, gum, dogwood, and mulberry trees.) Further detective work (want to help?) may answer these questions, or at least turn up more clues.
I don't know anything about grants, what information they include, etc. My John Smith had 3 sons, Augustine, John, and Thomas (I think - from memory). Augustine married Susannah Darnall, so this seems like a likely match for my ancestor. Can you educate me as to what information is available from the grant and how to get a copy? Thank you so much. Lord Fairfax, a landowner with vast property holdings in the Virginia Northern Neck area, gave Washington his first surveying job. George set out with two of Lord Fairfax’s experienced surveyors on a month-long trip across the Blue Ridge Mountains in early 1748 with as little as three practice surveys to his credit. Part of the land they surveyed would become the city of Winchester, later chartered in 1752. This journey served as Washington’s initiation into the field of surveying and led him to pursue it as a career. Washington developed a lifelong friendship with the powerful and influential Fairfax family that allowed him upward mobility through Virginia society. In a way, surveying gave Washington the connections he needed to later become president of the United States! Washington was able to generate a successful surveying career before later becoming involved in the military and politics. Between 1747 and 1799 Washington surveyed over two hundred tracts of land and held title to more than 65,000 acres in 37 different locations Marshall, Fauquier Co, town was surveyed and platted by John Mauzy in 1797 Culpeper County, chartered in 1749, was named for Lord Thomas Culpeper, Colonial Governor of Virginia. That year, at the age of 17, George Washington was commissioned to survey and plot the Town and the County of Culpeper. The Town of Culpeper was chartered in 1759 by an Act of the General Assembly as the Town of Fairfax and it was recorded that the Town occupied a "high and pleasant situation In Rappahannock in July 1749, a 17-year old George Washington noted in his journal, "in the Blue Ridge Mountains …I laid off a town." The young surveyor, assisted by two chainmen, laid out the Town of Washington in the same five-block by two-block grid that exists today. The town was officially established by the Virginia Assembly in 1796. Though there are now 28 Washingtons in the United States, this is "The First Washington of All." Today Washington serves as the county seat, is home to the famous Inn at Little Washington, as well as country inns, shops, and galleries. Other historic small towns include Woodville (1803), Amissville (1810), Sperryville (1820), and Flint Hill (1820s), each with its own charm and heritage. At the northern edge of the county, is Chester Gap. Washington is a town in Rappahannock County, Virginia. It is noted for being the oldest of the 28 towns and villages by the name of Washington in the United States of America. The site of this town was surveyed by George Washington himself in July of 1749. Its population was just 183 people at the 2000 census. It is also the county seat of Rappahannock County[3]. It is nicknamed Little Washington because of its proximity to Washington, D.C., which lies only 70 miles east In Thoroughfare Gap beside Interstate 66, stand, half hidden in the trees, the ruins of a huge mill that was producing flour when George Washington surveyed in the area. Twice burned and repaired during the Civil War, it operated until Harry Truman was President, and only recently burned for a third time ============================================= Abraham Lincoln is remembered for many things—president, statesman, lawyer—even his career as a railsplitter is fairly well-known. He is least remembered for surveying. But survey he did, and he left behind much evidence in the form of signed plats, maps and the towns he helped lay out.

GW may have surveyed some of the leased lots for Lord Fairfax in the Manors. I have not seen his name mentioned in the surveys for the Fauquier grants, but I may have missed it since I wasn't looking for it. He spent a lot of time surveying in Frederick County, including what is now Hampshire and Hardy counties in WV, as well as up in Jefferson and Berkeley counties (WV). You may want to do a Google search for the George Washington Papers. They are now online and you can search his diary to see if Fauquier is mentioned anywhere. Keep in mind that much of Fauquier was already surveyed and allocated prior to Fauquier becoming a county (1759). - Nancy U. No virus found in this outgoing message. Pat... would a copy of the Dickenson Fairfax Propriety help?? Joe Baughman Looking for Wheelers in Fauquier
I recall a reference to George Washington surveying some land in Fauquier County -- has the exact location of those parcels been identified, either through your work or that of earlier historians?
