Amanda, I think you caught me in my nebulous research period. Anyway, not sure if this was originally found in Avlyn Conley's "Dodd Diggins", a newsletter from years ago - or if I came across it somewhere else. I'd have to do some digging of my own. I noticed though that Robert Dodd has Joseph Wheatley. So, I'm now unsure. No one really knows where many of the 18th Century Jetts came from, and I hope that some of my online speculation has not led others to draw conclusions. Jett genealogy is like a 100-piece jigsaw puzzle with 30 missing pieces. You just can’t put it together until you have more parts. That is not going to happen until we throw out all the secondary and hearsay sources, and instead accumulate in one place all of the facts that are based on reliable sources. Then the Jett “crowd” may collectively put together the puzzle that an individual might find impossible. For example, let’s take the year 1760. We know that there were at least three men named James Jett alive in Virginia that year. One of them ended up, fairly well known and respected, in Culpeper County. One of them died in New Jersey, fighting in the Revolutionary War. And one of them lived in Fauquier County. At one time I thought the second and third might be the same person, but James Jett continued to show up in county records after the War. We have only one record, suggesting a parent for a James Jett living in 1760. That would be the James Jett, son of Peter Jett who died in 1758. But we can’t use this record for all three James Jetts, just because we don’t have two others. We need to figure out where all three of them originated. Until that happens, we are just spinning our wheels, and discouraging others from doing good research because they think they can rely on our faulty conclusions. Incidentally, I have seen recent references to the SETTLE and MOTHERSHEAD families, both of whom also appear in JETT records. Sometimes, making connections between families is a good way to sort them all out. The population of Virginia in 1760 was about 340,000. That’s much less than the population today of Wyoming. I doubt there were more than 40 or 50 male Jetts living at any one time, during the 1700s. It’s just that they kept moving to the frontier, where few written records were kept and even fewer have been preserved. (It also doesn't help, that more than half of them were named John, Francis, William, Peter or James.) But the small number of subjects, and the small amount of reliable records, should make tracing all of them easier, not more difficult. I am always grateful that I am not a Smith descendant. I can't figure out what the WEAVER connection was. Will of Elizabeth Quisenberry, dated May 23, 1784; bequeaths to Elijah Weaver one bay horse, to him and his heirs forever; to Richard Weaver, one feather bed and furniture; to William Dodd, one bay mare and her future increase; to Nicholas Dodd, one bay colt; to Anne Weaver, all her wearing apparel and one side-saddle during her life, and after the decease of the said Anne Weaver the saddle to go unto her eldest daughter, Elizabeth Bayn, and to her heirs forever; gives to William Quisenberry some personal property.

I'm happy to see that others are working on sorting out the Jett family, though. I would be careful about connecting Tidewater Jetts from King George and Westmoreland counties, with piedmont Jetts in Fauquier County. However, the family did start out there. Also, I wonder about the 1685 birth date for John Jett. Is there any source for this, or did someone back into it by figuring that he had to be 25 when an alleged offspring was born in 1710? And where is the evidence of the 1710 birthdate?
I'm not only confused about the Jetts, I'm confused about these emails. LOL! I have found a cousin, Betty, who has been working on the Jetts as well as the Courtney's and we combined our efforts. She has some kind of computer program and she used it to sort out the Jett's that she put into it and she feels that our James Jett was the one born ca 1735 married to Elizabeth ? and that his parents were Peter Jett and Anne ? and Peter's parents were Francis Jett and Sarah Saxton/Ashton. That appears to be the conclusion you came to as well. I have no clue as to where the birthdate of 1710 came from. It is probably something that someone felt had to be a somewhat correct date and then everyone else copied it. I thought that James may have been the son of Francis (Roger) Jett and Mary Hutchinson but their son was born probably around 1742-45 and that would be too late for our James Jett if he was an adult when his father died ca 1758. If that date is correct. Kathleen > >>I found this but I can't vouch for it... Marianne Dillow. > Hey, I can't vouch for it either, and I'm the one who wrote it. Listers, Sorry if my three JETT post don't make much sense, as after being bounced I tried to break it down into parts. Anyhow, I need HELP! Anything, that anyone might have on a Francis MARSHALL, please post it here. This is what I found in trying to track down the family of old John DODSON recorded in the early survey's taken in the Shenandoah Valley. "Warren County, Virginia Deed Book A" Page 356 Francis MARSHALL of Warren County, Virginia Transfer of Rights to Slaves: 1 Apr 1839, 1 Apr 1839 Whereas Jane DODSON, daughter of the late Charles DODSON of Fairfax County, Virginia was devised from her father the slave woman named Ann, then she intermarried with said Francis MARSHALL and ha by him children: Charles A. MARSHALL; Lucinda MARSHALL, now married to William SMITH; Mary Ann MARSHALL, now married to Elijah BROY and Susan MARSHALL, now said Jane (DODSON) MARSHALL died as did slave, Ann but she had a daughter named Silvia who is now in possession of said Francis MARSHALL and sid Silvia has had daughter named Arthelia and whereas said Francis MARSHALL had children (not named) from a former marriage since they might think they have rights to said slaves after the death of Francis MARSHALL and all think it is right to secure them to children of is wife Jane, for $5 said Francis MARSHALL transfers over all rights to the two slaves to said children. Signed by Francis MARSHALL Witnesses: Robert TURNER Received by Robert TURNER, CC I don't know where in Warren County they lived; but in this time frame Judge John MARSHALL and James M. MARSHALL owned a huge amount of acreage that was located on both sides of the Fauquier and Warren County lines. In 1845, ordered by the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery of Fauquier County, Virginia to a "Division of Real Estate". At that time, John MARSHALL is deceased and that part of the division goes to his heirs; but it appears James M. MARSHALL is still alive for the big event. Does anyone know if Francis MARSHALL is somehow related to this MARSHALL family? Who is this guy? Chocy
Kathleen, Maybe you can find the wills or the book of abstracts to back check the information. Good Luck, Chocy
