Presbyterians, as the successors to the Church of Scotland, were fairly well accepted in the Federalist period, but Baptist and Quakers were definitely outsiders. The true meaning of the First Amendment's freedom of religion clause hadn't quite sunk in yet (still hasn't, in some cases!)---at least in the House of Burgesses. They simply turned the C of E glebe lands over to the Protestant Episcopal church--prompting hundreds of protesting petitions from many "dissenting" Virginians over the clause about government sponsoring a single religion. Those petitions always seemed to me one of the first real "stands" for the Bill of Rights. Many of these petitions, including several from Fauquier, are online at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/repehtml/rpabout.html Karen Dale
I thought this to be interesting. David Thomas, Robert Sanders and John Monroe, DissentingTeachers, having been recommended to the Court by the Elders of their Churches, are licensed to marry Persons agreeable to the Act of Assembly. [NOTE: John K. Gott states: David Thomas was the founder of Broad Run Baptist Church, the oldest, continuous Baptist Church in Virginia. Robert Sanders was a member of the church and ordained from that body. John Monroe, M.D. founder of Long Branch Baptist Church, and founder of Marshall (formerly Salem). This was quite a step for the Commonwealth and County Court to make - before this time all marriages performed by "dissenters" were illegal and they were also vigorously persecuted by the Court, especially some members). Dissenters meaning: A person who leaves a church. A person who disagrees with a popular action or school of thought. June

Jim, I would suggest adding to your list the Fairfax County Public Library. Their Virginia Room has one of the largest and best collections of Virginiana in the state. Dear Fauquier County, Virginia Genealogist, Is there someone who can do a Chapter on the Pickett family for the Blackwell Booklet? Would like about 20 - 30 pages or so about the earliest Pickett families in Fauquier County, Virginia? We already have the chapter started just need someone who is a descendant who has accurate information and documentation on the Pickett family. It would be great if several people would like to work together on this. thanks Jim Burgess Fauquier County, Virginia USGENWEB
Dear Fauquier County, Virginia Genealogist, My booklet on the Blackwell family is nearing completion. I have chapters on the Pickett and Keith Families. Would someone who is related like to write the chapter on these families. Do not want all the information - just two or three generations with documentation! I have a start on these families, but since they are not directly related I have not worked on them. It might be best if several members of the list worked on each chapter. JOSEPH BLACKWELL was born about 1636 in England or Virginia. Joseph lived at The Poplars in Northumberland County, Virginia. He may have returned to England before his death. We do not know the name of Joseph BLACKWELLs wife. Northumberland County, Virginia was formed in 1648. Blackwell Genealogy by Commander E. M. Blackwell U. S. Navy Commander, Retired. Richmond, Virginia Old Dominion Press, Inc. There is a tradition that has been handed down in the family that three Blackwell brothers emigrated from England to the Colonies early in the 17th century. They were men of high standing and education, being graduates of Oxford. In 1908 I was informed by Mr Edgar Blackwell of Tipirs P O and Wicomico Church, Northumberland County, Virginia and the oldest Blackwell in that section, that the first settler was Joseph Blackwell who was sent over by Charles I in 1636 as "King's Surveyor" and he was given a seal with the Blackwell Coat of Arms on it, probably the seal for his official papers. In 1909, Mr Blackwell's son, Harding, visited me at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland and showed me this seal of which I made several wax impressions. In 1936 I visited Mr Harding Blackwell at his residence "East Gascony" Rehoboth Church, Northumberland County Virginia and he again showed me the seal. From this it would appear that Joseph Blackwell, King's Surveyor, 1636 was the first emigrant to Virginia. He was probably a young man and may not have remained permanently in Virginia, but went back to England and educate his son Joseph (Pleb, Trinity College, Mat. July 2, 1658, who came later to Virginia. Honorable Joseph Blackwell, King's Surveyor, the progenitor of the Virginia family is supposed to have been the eldest of the three brothers who emigrated early in the 17th Century. Honorable Robert Blackwell, the progenitor of the Newton (Long Island ) family came to New York as a widow with several children. He married Mary Manning daughter of Captain John Manning, who owned Cierken, on Hog Island, in East River which was confiscated from the Dutch in 1651. It was called Manning Island and later it was called Blackwell's Island when Robert Blackwell came into possession of it. Robert also owned Ravenswood, no Long Island City in Brooklyn. He died in 1717, leaving issue......... Honorable Joseph BLACKWELL, the progenitor of the Virginia family, was of the "Poplars" Northumberland County, Virginia. He was a graduate of Oxford and came to the Colonies in 1636, being sent over as the King's Surveyor, he played an important part in the early history of America. He was a staunch Royalist and a firm and loyal supporter of the established Church. He also owned "Walnut Lodge" and it is here that many of the family are buried. The original seal with the Blackwell Arms is now in the possession of one his descendants Edgar Blackwell of Northumberland County, Virginia. His wife's name is not known and their heir appears to be Samuel BLACKWELL. Child of JOSEPH BLACKWELL 2a. SAMUEL BLACKWELL, SR., was born 23 Sep 1680 Northumberland County, Virginia Samuel died 17 June 1732 5 Aug 1732. Samuel married Margery DOWNING daughter of William DOWNING and Mary. Lest I be accused of holding out on the list, here is a record created by this very unique woman. I think is shows Elizabeth had pluck and a keen sense of her self worth. She demonstrated this more than once. James Taylor died within the year and Francis Slaughter represented his wife in the settlement of his estate. Both Elizabeth and her mother executed pre-nuptial agreements protecting the interests of their heirs. Transcription of Separation of Elizabeth (Underwood) Taylor and husband James Taylor Surry County, Virginia Microfile # 113, Section 1 Deeds Wills, etc., 1652-1672, p. 41. Jim if your books are fact specific fully documented work on the various families that provide a guide that can be retraced then you will have no trouble getting them published. Willow Bend Books would be where I would go. However if they do not meet the "genealogical standard" as defined for publication then your informal distribution system would be best. [There is a Genealogical Standards Manuel] Some libraries will accept anything. Others are limited in shelf space and will be choosey about what they put on their shelf. Fully documented work hopefully following the format in the book Evidence: Citation and Analysis for the Family Historian by Elizabeth Shown Mills is always appreciated. Margaret Margaret R. Jim, If your books are not page numbered or indexed, did you know that software programs such as Family Tree Maker create "books" and will index and paginate very easily? No need to do it manually. I'd be happy to work with you on Blackwell. Libby
Crazy Jim, (Isn't that how you signed off your posting? Or called yourself?) <grins> I'll gladly donate to your books for the libraries! I really like the idea they could be be purchased as a fund raiser. Not everyone has a computer; so I like the idea of hard copies. I'm sure they know their market. I'm not as knowledgable as many; but isn't Handley of Winchester, VA an excellent sourse? Don't they sell books? (I've never been there; so I'm guessing.) I'd like to see every Historical library in every county have a copy. Many of my Fauquier families ended up in all the surrounding counties. Surely there is someone among us who has a relationship with one of the Historical Societies. Questions could be asked. Shirley Starks
The Richmond Co. Library would be in Wasaw, the county seat but I do not recall it being much of a collection. Westmoreland would be in Montross and it is in a Museum. There is a fairly large one with a regional collection in Fredericksburg. And Stafford Co folks use it also. It is in Spottsylvania co. but downtown Fredericksburg. Margaret R. To the Fauquier List, Jim has been great in all that he has done for us and the Fauquier site. He is a real worker. Many of us rely on him and each other for help in finding our ancestors for one reason or another. His Fauquier site has been a God send to us all. I think it would be great if we all would chip in and give a donation of $6 or $12 in helping Jim get his books donated to the libraries he mentioned. I know I would be the first to step up, Jim and help you with a donation. You are very deserving of help, it is the lease we can do for you in return. Good luck. Dear Fauquier County, Virginia Genealogist, I do not want to sell them. Except to libraries at cost. Perhaps we could buy them and donate the copy to a library in the Northern Neck. I would be happy to donate a copy to the Heritage Society, Fauquier County Library, Library of Virginia, and the LDS Library in Salt Lake. My goal is to provide this information so that others do not have to spend a life time researching these families. Would a library down load them and bind them and put them in their library? I want to be sure that there are hard copies in the libraries. Could the Heritage Society sell them for a fund raiser? Could some one in Fauquier County, ask the powers in the Society to see if they are interested? Will post them on a web site and members of our mailing list could be able to down load them free. Atleast that is my plan, if the Fauquier Heritage Society does not want them. Can someone report to the list how the Heritage Society is raising money? Would they like to sell these books? Would the Heritage Society like our help? I would like for members of the list to proof read them. After they have been proof read I would like help numbering the pages and doing an every name index. I believe I can get the books printed for about $6.00 to $12.00 per book with comb binding not including the freight. I have a friend who had a comb binding machine. This is just a guess! Here is what I am thinking in brief. I lost my old family web site, but would like to ressurect that web site and post the books on the web site. Perhaps I could get the libraries to pay for the books at this discount rate at cost so that I would not lose money. I do not want to make money. Most of the books are nearly complete. They do not have indexes. The pages are not numbered. I would like to have some help with proof reading and indexing. This is probably a 1 year project. Just wondering what you think. It appears that the family moved to KY in 1790 but then Wm Sr comes back to Fauquier. Is there any will on record for Wm Sr? Wm Sr and Wm Jr were in the Rev. War and are listed by the DAR. I have written for records of Wm Sr. but have not gotten back anything yet. Wm Sr. is listed as in the Continental Line. Was there a CL in Virginia? Where & when?. Being a Texan I leaarned a lot ot Texas history but not much detail about the Rev. War in VA. Thanks Mildred http://community.webtv.net/MLowrie/BERRYMANMCDANIEL
Dear Fauquier County, Virginia Genealogist, Many of you know that I have been working on a book that I was going to call Anderson, Cockrill, Moffett, Smith and Allied Families. In 2001 I completed Cockrill Families of Northern Virginia which ended up being about 700 pages. Well Volume II Anderson, Cockrill, Moffett, Smith and Allied Families is about 800 pages. I lost about $500 on Volume I. I may be better off donating small books to Libraries in the Northern Neck, the Library of Virginia, LDS Library in Salt Lake. I would like to donate these books to the Heritage Society so that they could use them as a fund raiser, but apparently no one is interested. What are the ten best libaries in the Northern Neck? 1. Heritage Library in Marshall 2. Fauquier Public Library in Warrenton 3. Public Library in Culpeper 4. Balch Library in Leesburg 5. King George County Historical Society 6. Mary Washington Ball Library 7. Northumberland Historical Society 8. Richmond County Library - What would that be? 9. Stafford County Were would that be? 10. Westmorland Libary Where would that be. 11. Prince William County Public Library 12. Library of Virginia 13. LDS Library in Salt Lake City I want to keep the number of Libraries down to keep the cost down. It would be great if I could find volunteers to pay for each book to be donated to the above libraries. I will do it, but really cannot afford to bear all the expense. Books would be on the Moffett 80 pages, Smith 150 pages, Blackwell 100 pages, Eustace 40 pages , Minter 20 pages, Bailey 100 pages, Rosser 40 pages, Nevill 40 pages, Mott 60 pages, Waugh 70 pages, Doniphan 50 pages, Rowley 50 pages, Pages are approximate. Also I have been working on the Smith family from every county in the Northern Neck. That work is a real mess. Also I have another 60 families that I have a lot of information. I want to do the Blackwell family first. Any comments? thanks Jim Burgess Yes I am still crazy!
