Dear List, I just purchased a paperback edition of the above by Nancy Chappelear Baird, a signed copy no less. My problem is that a mistake occurred in binding and I have duplicate pages of text replacing some missing introductory pages. Does anyone have a copy of this book and could you make copies of the missing pages for me? I am missing introductory page ix (this doesnt look right anyway Roman #9, continued description of Belle Grove) through xvi. I have xvii. (In it's place in my version are pages 1-8 of the diary.) I sure would appreciate some help! Libby
I think you have to be registered for the NY Times website (no cost) -- so this link might not work for those who aren't already, but the story is in the November 20 issue. Here is the link and the first few paragraphs. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/20/garden/20VIRG.html?pagewanted=1 THE PLAINS, Va. THE three-story house here owned by Christopher Ohrstrom appears pretty much as it might have in the 1830's, all pearl-white clapboard and window glass so wavy it always looks as if it's raining outside. Nearby stands a barn that dates from before the Civil War. And clustered around the two buildings are several modest white structures, including a privy where one of Robert E. Lee's sons is said to have hidden from Union soldiers. From the looks of things, it's just another of the prosperous farms on the outskirts of this town of 266 people, within an hour's drive of Washington. The Plains is deep in manicured horse country out of a Constable painting, a place where old-money millionaires like Bunny Mellon cultivate anonymity. But think again. Here at Lee Hall, where Mr. Ohrstrom, 47, an expert on early American decorative arts, lives with his wife, Lilla, 38, a sculptor, and their four children, everything old has been built again. Since 1996, when they moved from upstate New York to this town, where both grew up, the Ohrstroms have been living a home-improvement project that puts "This Old House" to shame. Seven buildings on the 160-acre farm are Southern ruins dismantled like jigsaw puzzles and brought to the site by Mr. Ohrstrom and a team of craftsmen. Each building has been reconstructed and restored, one hand-forged nail at a time, to become part of the Ohrstrom family compound.
Chocy; I am trying to sort out all BARTLETT, BARTLEY, BARKLEY, BERKLEY lines from Colonial VA up to 1850. I've extracted all the census records and many others, and am working on the Pers Prop Tax Lists, but I don't have the 1815 Landowners info you quoted from. Could I trouble you for the same info you provided below for these surnames? I am happy to provide any info I have on these same surnames - I've traced a number of them to other VA counties, and to KY and other states. My 6xgggf was Nathaniel Dodd Sr. Nathaniel's wife was Sarah, but they also, had a daughter named Sarah. Sarah (the daughter) married Charles Pinkard. My question---Does anyone on the list know if Charles and Sarah had a son named Nathaniel? Thanks,. Annie D.
"The Hindall you mentioned may be "Kendall". There have been transcription errors. Not certain which is correct." November 18, 2003 Jim & List: For decades I thought the same thing! Never quite sure if it was an error, or accurate. After all there are surnames of Hindall, Gendall, Fendall, Pendill and of course Kendall, all in Fauquier County. At last count, there are sixteen different ways to spell the surname Kendall, with a "K". But, alas, Hindall, to the best of my research, is not connected to the Kendall's. The Hindall's migrated to Ohio with the Great Western Movement. I contacted some Hindall's in Ohio 10, 12 years back; They absolutely, adamantly, insisted that they were Hindall's, NOT Kendall's. I took them at their word, and let it be, as insisted! Tom Kendall
Jim, With the names you've presented, I presume you are referring to the Dodd family of Tinpot and not the Dodds of Loudoun Co. The Dodd homestead dates from the 1740s when Nathaniel and Sarah Dodd settled on Tinpot Run in southern (today) Fauquier. The location is just south of Opal and north of Remington. There is/was a small community there named Doddsville. He died in 1784 leaving a large estate and land holdings. Some of the children took their inheritance and went into NC and KY. The others, except for John, divided their father's lands and remained in the area. Son John took his inheritance and settled in Leeds Manor on South Run, a tributary off Carters Run. He purchased the Curtis grist mill. The location is just east of Orlean. The land book descriptions are vague, giving the nearest major watercourse - in this case Carters Run. John Dodd died in 1815 so I'm not sure which John Dodd you mean. He had a son John and several nephews also named John. The Hindall you mentioned may be "Kendall". There have been transcription errors. Not certain which is correct. Daniel McClaren lived near the TinPot Dodds on Marsh Run I believe. He married a Mary Dodd who is probably the daughter of Benjamin Dodd from a previously (unknown) marriage. Your message is unclear in its formatting if you are searching the Carter surname. There was a Francis Carter family in the Orlean area which had connections to the John Dodd family. They are no relation to the namesake of Carters Run, nor to the Carters of King Carter notoriety. Hope this helps. Does anyone have any information about any epidemics, plagues, etc around the 1820's. My 6th ggf died 1821 and unconfirmed information that his two youngest sons in 1824 and 1827. In 1832 my 6th ggm wrote about cholera near Washington and she died in 1834. I just found it odd that he died young (relatively speaking) and his two boys died very young all within 6 years. Janean

It's at http://www.hamrick.com/names/ I was lucky enough to find it when I had just started doing genealogy, and all I had for my maternal ancestors were the surnames Jett and Merry -- between this site, and the SSDI, I narrowed down their location to Bond County, Illinois, which happens to have a wonderful genealogy web forum.

There were two guardian bonds written on the Moore boys. The one you mentioned and the second one: 27 January 1835: On the motion of Michael Plaister, it is ordered that Elijah Chinn, guardian of James Moore, Henry Moore, Benjamin Moore and William Moore, infant children of William Moore, dec'd. be summoned to appear here the 1st day of the next Court to answer for his default and shew cause, if any he hath, for his failure to return an Inventory of the estate of his wards aforesaid. According John K. Gott's research Elijah Chinn;'s marriage was: Elijah Chinn and Tamar Moore Marriage Bond: 8/25/1828 Bondsman: Samuel Puller Marriage Date: 9/2/1828 not 1829 There was a: James Moore and Emily Parker Marriage Bond: 7/23/1832 Bondsman: d/o of James James Moore and Elizabeth Palmer Marriage Bond: March 13, 1837 Bondsman: d/o Abner and Sarah Cogle Usually when a marriage takes place it states if the groom is marrying a "Mrs" that is not to say always.
Hope that maybe someone can help me. Elijah Chinn, appointed guardian of James, Henry, Benjamin and William Moore, orphans of William Moore, dec'd. 23 Nov. 1829. For $1,500. Sec: Charles Chinn and Henry H. Hutchison. Elijah Chinn was married on September 2, 1829 to Tamer Moore. My question is: Does anyone know if Tamer was the widow of William Morre and thus the mother of the four Moore brothers? I am curious about James Moore as I am looking for the parents of James Bryant Moore, born in 1815. James Bryant Moore married Elizabeth Palmer, daughter of Abner and Sarah Cogle Palmer in 1837 in Fauquier County, Va. Hopefully someone might have seen some information on these Moore family members.
