    1. William BALL, son of William and Martha (Brumfied)
    2. Linda Sparks Starr
    3. Again, my major source for this information is _Ball Cousins_ by Margaret Kinsey, 1981 Gateway Press. William was probably the youngest son of William and Martha, and was probably born in Pennsylvania about 1762. He had moved to Virginia before 9 Feb 1788, the date of his marriage to Ann Keas, daughter of Margaret Keas, with Isaac Keas as witness. [Fauquier Co. VA Marriage record] William probably died before 1800. Ann Ball was shown as head of household on the 1810 census for Fauquier Co. [p. 166 Kinsey] It is possible that he was the "William who started an iron furnace in Falmouth VA and died before he finished and his son had to complete it." Kinsay adds "That was a tradition published in Virkus that had a wide circulation." Their children: Elizabeth Ball Potter -- shown on 1826 list as "Elizabeth Potter" but original affadavits with the Ball Collection at the PA Historical Society shows her as unmarried. Neither she, nor descendants, shared the distribution of Joseph's estate. Aaron H. Ball b. 1792 died 1833 in Stafford Co. Virginia per another affadavit within the Ball Collection. He married "Elizabeth" who was living in 1850 in Stafford Co. with son James H. and daughter & son-in-law Hezehiah and Ann P. Potts. John b. abt 1793 m. 2 Dec 1812 Fanny Pittman in Carolina Co. Virginia. He died 11 Jan 1857 in Clark Co. KY. William b. 1798 Fauquier Co. VA d. 1860 Henry Co. KY. He married Barbara Hall of KY

    1. Researching Common Surnames
    2. Dear Smith - and other common name researchers (and I bet you have some) Some tips I have learned while trying to scale brick walls: I was trying to separate out/sort out two men who had Rev War service. They had rather unusual first and last names, but, darn it, they lived in adjoining counties in North Carolina. I happened to be in Washington, DC and wandered into the DAR Library to seek help with this problem. The Library was nearly empty, and I reported my problem. I was directed to a staff genealogist, as I was trying to help a prospective member find the right ancestor--a new ancestor. The genealogist told me: 1. Find out who were the associates of each man. That was rather easy because I had a list of all the spouses whom the children of the patriot had married, and that caused me to round up some suspicious characters with those surnames. In other cases, I have noted the neighbors (generally named in deeds), bondsmen for marriages or other bonds, administrators of estates, sons-in-law as named in wills or deeds, and so on. A cousin tells me he traced a common-named family by the name of one of the slaves!!! 2. Find out on what watercourse each man was located. For colonial Southerners, this is most important. Water was needed for each household, for crops, for animals, and for transportation! Most land records, patents and deeds, make some mention of a watercourse--a river, a creek, a run, a path, a swamp, etc. Another well-know genealogist-historian suggests using the NuckMuck (National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections put out by the Library of Congress). These are hard to use, because there are so many of these catalogs, but, if you are near a large library, call up and ask the reference librarian if they have NuckMuck [yep--they wll know what you mean] This latter is especially a difficult job--you get waylaid by so many interesting entries. Try it first with an unusual name in your family--or a county in which your people lived. Here is a website: www.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html The National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC) provides RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network) bibliographic records and makes associated authority records for collections in the custody of repositories located throughout the United States which are open on a regular basis to researchers and which are unable to contribute national-level cataloging to a national computer database such as OCLC or RLIN. I just now put in the search engine for NUCMC what I thought was an unusual surname, but the search engine must have misread it. I know that a family member had long ago before his demise deposited his collections in some library from the Library of Congress obtained annual reports. I had stumbled on this in the book version of NUCMC. I just now discovered on the cited website that the Library of Virginia reports all the Bible records which it holds. I am going to have to try some new searches with a slightly more unusual name. I did spot a Womack Bible and I will again search for that, as one of my females in Goochland Co. bore that maiden name (named in her father's will, as were other married daughters.) Isn't it amazing what we can do on the internet? For example, NUCMC when I thought I would have to go to a University Library. Catalogs from most Universities, if not all; census databases; e-mail from cranky cousins; e-mail from grateful cousins!!! and so on. I hope you sort out your Smiths!!! I believe Northern Neck folks are hard to sort out. I have a more unusual surname--I thought--until I started rounding them up--all of them prior to 1763 when my ancestor appeared in Orange Co., NC, but had been in Virginia Rangers during French & Indian War!!! Oh, well, some of us like untangling these mysteries. Others just like to connect dots, whether they belong there or not. Remind me of kindergartners trying to color within the lines!!! E.W.Wallace

    1. Re: Bushrod Cox
    2. While it may not always be the case, giving children the surname of a relative as a first name was not unusual, especially in large families who followed the naming conventions of the time. In one of my family lines, the youngest son (at least the 9th child) was named Smith Sanford McCrary. Don't know where the Sanford came from yet, but his mother's maiden name was Smith. I think by the time they got down to naming him, they may have run out of names of the conventional sort :-) Bushrod, like Armstead, may well fit in the same sort of pattern. Harriet

    2. A chapter, now disbanded, in NSDAR was named Hannah Bushrod, and I knew there was a connection to the Washington family of Northern Neck Virginia (like George Washington's predecessors). John Augustine Washington (parents: Augustine Washington and Mary Ball) was married to Hannah Bushrod, if what I read on the internet (I used a www.google.com search) is correct. I believe their land was in Westmoreland Co., but I am not a Washington expert. Try a google search for Bushrod and see what you come up with. All who had ancestors early in Fauquier Co. should put these books on their must-read list: Gertrude E. Gray, Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants [4 volumes, arranged chronologically, published by Geneal. Publishing Co.] Early volumes of Nell Marion Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers These will have some Northern Neck land grants here before Lord Fairfax took over Northern Neck. Any and all books concerning records of Prince William Co. and even surrounding counties prior to the formation of Fauquier Co., which, if memory serves was about 1759. Many of these have been abstracted by The Antient Press (Ruth & Sam Sparacio, compilers) The Antient Press has a website and an online catalog. Beverly Fleet, a long-ago genealogist, compiled many records for Northern Neck Virginia, and you will find your earliest ancestors or their associates in some of his records, particularly Northumberland Co. which covered all of Northern Neck. Some of his records are on CD-ROMs put out by Family Tree Maker. Once in a while, you can find them on sale. If you can find them, Peggy Shomo Joyner compiled surveys of Northern Neck land, which surveys precede the land grants, and you will find some of those nam es in those surveys. Land records have helped me with many a genealogical problem. When you get used to these records, then you want to start collecting all the neighbors along the same watercourse, as they most often intermarried. Those who live in Virginia or in the Washington DC area or the Salt Lake City area should have no problem locating these books. If they are not in a library near you, get busy with your internet searches and entice your public librarian to interlibrary loan the books for you. Your New Year's resolution! Happy hunting! I wonder if it connects somehow to the surname of Bushrod? I also have a first name of Armstead, another strange one! And I have seen the surname of Armstead from time to time. My Bushrod Alexander was born 2/7/1829 in VA but I do not have evidence of his mother. My Armstead Alexander was born 4/30/1836 in IN. His mother Dolly Foster married Rigby Alexander in Fauquier Co., VA 8/12/1833. There is evidence that my Rigby and Dolly did move to IN. Some researchers think my Rigby Alexander is really John Alexander who married Netty Creel 8/28/1809 in Fauquier Co., VA. Any ideas about this from anyone? I have never been able to find evidence of a first marriage for Rigby Alexander in Fauquier or surrounding counties. Found him listed on an 1813 personal tax list in Loudon County and on some census records. Could really use some help. Thanks, Jessie

    3. May I add my contribution to the growing list of early Fauquier residents with the given name of Bushrod? Bushrod Cox was born 9 Jan 1823 in Frederick Co VA; but his Grandparents, Samuel (1755-1828) and Elizabeth Cox were residents of Fauquier Co as early as 1782 (Fothergill, Virginia Taxpayers 1782-87.) I have found no intermarriage of my Cox family with the Bushrod or Washington families to account for the use of Bushrod as a given name. My current theory is that the prominence of the Bushrod family in the area gave rise to this naming--- due to a lack of any other ideas. Thanks for the Bushrod Family lineage. Karen Cox Gray

    3. Dear Fauquier County, Virginia Genealogist, Through the years I have been extracting a lot of information on the Smith family of the Northern Neck. Here is my William Smith and Margery ROWLEY. I have a chapter on every county with partial information on the Smith family. I hesitate to share the information as it is in such a mess. My goal has been to determine who the father of William SMITH who married Margery ROWLEY. There must be 25 possible men who might be the father of William Smith who married Margery Rowley. 1. parents of Wm Ball and Martha Brumfield

    3. I realize this particular message is mostly outside the limits of Fauquier County, but I think it's worth sending to the list because some of those mentioned are 'said' to have lived in Fauquier County and at least two of their sons did move there. Previously I sent information on the children of William and Martha (Brumfield); this message discusses their parents. Again, most of my information comes from Margaret Kinsey's _Ball Cousins_, 1981, Gateway Press. Contrary to the suggestion of the title, she discusses ONLY the Ball line related to Joseph Ball who died 1821 in Philadelphia. He died intestate and the court decided heirs of Joseph's aunts and uncles would share in his estate -- after his wife's portion was distributed. Kinsey cites many sources for specific statements (and I'll try to type those in as I go), but her main resource was the paper trail left by those who actually received money. Not all heirs did (in Kentucky one brother did and another didn't) -- my guess --some didn't bother with the hassle of proving their line back to one of Joseph's relatives. This William Ball's parents were John Ball and Sarah Road(e)s who married in Burlington Co., New Jersey 12 Feb 1711 per copy of their marriage bond, taken from microfilm at the NJ State Library. It remains a mystery why they married in New Jersey when she was living in Pennsylvania with her parents prior to and they near the parents after this date? That it is the same couple is proven by minutes of the Radnor Monthly Meeting in 1714 showing John Ball's apology for marrying Jno Road' daughter contrary to her father and mother's will. [Radnor (Mens) Monthly Minutes 1712-1718, p. 19. ] The births of only two children of John and Sarah (Roads) Ball appear in the surviving Gwynedd Monthly Meeting records: [Briths 1690-1805 p. 6] 1712 Sarah, dau of Jno & Sarah Ball 30, 10 mo 1715 Hannah, dau of Jno. & Sarah Ball 23, 4 mo. [p 26 Kinsey] John and Sarah were still in the area of Plymouth township in 1730 when he served as executor of his bro-in-law's will. But they had moved to Douglas township before 29 Aug 1741, where he died. Items in his inventory suggests John was involved in the making of charcoal for early iron furnaces. Is this the reason two of his grandsons moved to Fauquier Co. VA? The seven known children of John and Sarah (Roads) -- at least these are the only ones whose names appears as aunts / uncles of Joseph Ball -- were: Sarah b. 30 Dec 1712 d. 10 Dec 1779. She married Paul Custer abt 1735 Hannah b. 23 Jun 1715 PA married Joseph Holloway John b. abt 1718 married Mary Richards. [These are the parents of Joseph d. 1821] William b. abt 1720 d. before April 1774 in Pennsylvania (or so Margaret Kinsey believes). He married Martha Brumfield by 1742. Abigail married first Peter Gilbert 16 June 1749 and second George Tompkins Mary married George Smith abt 1750s Anna married John Campbell 4 April 1744 Martha Brumfield was the daughter of Thomas Brumfield and Susannah. According to Ray C. Brumfield and research of Blackman O. Brumfield in _Descendants of Thomas Brumfield of Berks County, Pennsylvania: Genealogy and Family History 1720-1960_ , [1962 Woolman Press, Indianapolis] they lived in Amity Township, Berks Co. and attended the Exeter Friend's Meeting House along with the families of George and Squire Boone, Mordecai Lincoln and John Ball. Although birth dates for most / all of the children aren't known, the authors think Martha is the eldest child and born abt 1725. These authors differ from Kinsey (who was beginning her research about the time they were setting theirs into type for publication) for has them moving to Culpeper County, VA before 1752 when son Thomas was born and then has them in Fauquier County, VA for birth of daughter Martha in 1760. Page 139 _Ball Cousins_ Kinsey makes this statement as to why she believes Virkus et al errs on this couple -- beginning with quote from will of Thomas Brumfield dated April 1774 / probated 1783: "'my will is that my said son Solomon shall pay and lay out for necessaries for my said daughter Martha Ball yearly what her necessity should require during her natural life.' The fact that Thomas Brumfield asked Solomon to provide for Martha indicated that her husband, William Ball, probably died before April 1774. It also showed that Martha was living in that area." From now on, I'll limit myself to the ones who actually lived in Fauquier County. Linda Linda Sparks Starr lsstarr@pilgrimage.us http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lksstarr

    3. Can someone tell me which BUSHROD families lived in Fauquier and Culpeper Counties? I have a Bushrod McCarty born about 1832 in Culpeper County, VA and his brother was Stephen French McCarty born 7 Jul 1835 in Rappahanock County, VA. Rappahanock County formed 1833 from the northern section of Culpeper and that's the area where my McCarty's lived. I did some research and there was someone named Stephen French that lived in Prince William County and his daughters married McCarty's but I couldn't find a connection to him. I'm curious how the name Bushrod got into my McCarty family. 3. Thanks, Linda. Good info to ponder. Was a >vestryman and G >justice like his father inherited 400 acres of land hiiis father. they had at >least one Dau > According to Margaret Kinsey in _Ball Cousins_, the William Ball who married Martha Brumfield most likely died before 1774, the date of her father's will. Martha's husband William was the son of John Ball and Sarah Roades, Quakers from Pennsylvania. Martha was the daughter of Thomas Brumfield who died before 28 Aug 1783 in Berks Co. PA. I know it is published that Samuel Ball's son William was the one who married Martha Brumfield / Bromfield. Several years ago I tried to find documentation for the marriage of Samuel Ball's son William, but never located anything close to 'good documentation' for his marriage, let alone the given name of his wife 'for sure'. I also seem to remember there were two William Balls who died in 1785 -- one with slaves and lots of property and the other almost destitute? My research records are now packed away so I'm going by memory here. I feel Mrs. Kinsey makes a good case for her side -- and my personal records reflect it. But I do admit to wondering how / why the Pennsylvania Balls moved to northern Virginia and married into the Payne family? According to her, the son of William Ball / Martha Brumfield "of Pennsylvania" is Capt. John Ball (1742 - 1806) who married Sarah Ellen Payne. Their son, John, married Alcey Withers and moved to Breckinridge County, Kentucky. In the 1850s descendants received money from the estate of Joseph Ball of Pennsylvania, which provides the background for Mrs. Kinsey's work. 2. Jim, Thanks for sending the copy of the deed. It isn't necessarily crucial for me, but does mention at least one of my ancestors, Edwin Conway. I'm glad to have it. By the way, I'm almost ready to send the Chapter 17 Eustace info. Do you want it sent snail mail or email. I don't think it would be hard to send by email, because there is not a lot to it. 3. 2 cents worth: Hooray for your email! You have blessed many new researchers with some very good tips, even though some on the list were not happy with all that you said. Those unhappy also must not read every email that comes through, as they didn't seem to know that you are a female. I tend to agree that many people dont give enough info when they query as there is a vast difference in the 1600s vs the 1800s. One of the first things I learned was that generations are usually 20 years apart. Granted, for those families that bore 15-20 children, that guideline doesn't necessarily pan out. Keep contributing as you can, and dont let anyone ruffle your feathers. Some people will not ever change, but many will learn as time goes by. And newbys will almost always not give much in the way of details until they learn that they will get more if they give more. Perhaps we should have that as a VAFAUQUI slogan: Give more to get more! 1. Re: BALL Bromfield Withers,
    2. Nancy I spent some time at the library today and it is interesting as to what is not there as to what is there. First of all there is a Margaret Ball who had a brother Wm who died in Culpeper in 1802. iIn this Wm's will he does not name a wife or children , the legatees are his sister MArgaret who was left a suit of Mourning clothes and referred to as sister Margaret Barrow and Nephew Wm Gray son of Capt Wm Gray. In 1799 in Culpeper Wm Ball no title associated with him freed about 8 slaves( I did not read the manumissions) There was no will for the Capt Wm Ball or an estate acoounting for that matter or invnetory or any thing of that type to prove that Wm Ball died in 1785 which I found very odd. In the records that I could easily search after 1785 Wm Ball is no longer referred to as Gent( ths title was one that a lot of times was carreid through in records even after they wre no longer serving on the court) which may indicate that the Wm Ball found in the reoords afterh this date may be his son If it is the Wm that died in 102 then he was in mid 80's when he died.. There were no deeds from Wm Ball to anyone( therefore no wife named0 I did see one reference to Frances Ball however as a witness . To further complcate matters there was a Wm Ball who leased 250 acres in 1776 whose wife was Rebekah and son was James the land tax records seem to indicate that there may be 2 WM Ball's living in Culpeper at the same time. so now I am not sure whether this family connects into Fauquier or not and as such I will not post info about them to the list so as not to be accused of being off topic. I iwill gladly correspond with anyone off list however Susan

    1. Re: BALL Bromfield Withers,
    2. I have not seen Ball Cousins and AM unfamiliar with it. The info that I posted was from Samuel Ball's will. I do believe that most people are basing this idea on Hayden's genealogies which as we know was rife with errors. I do know that WIlliam Ball was living on the land that he had inherited from his father in Culpeper and given the proximity to Fauquier that part always made sense tome. I will go to the library of VA and chack to see if there is will of Wm but I believe that I have checked this before . I purposefully posted this to the list because although I have been very proud of the fact that supposedly I was related to Geo. Washington it is more important to have the facts straight. If you will consider sharing the research that points to this marriage please do so. As I remember there were no deeds from Wm that stated his wife's name But I will go check. Thanks for the input( my family is going to be so mad if I disprove this!!!! Well at least I can still point to being distantly related to Geo Mason). I realize that this is the holiday season and may not be the best time to do this so there is no hurry. BTW Samuel Ball's will names his wife as Anna Catherine. The most efficient way to disprove this may be through the slaves that Samuel left to Wm. I Know that there was a Wm Ball in Culpeper who was married By 1765 to Frances Slaughter Daughter of Francis Slaughter . I presume that you have this info or perhaps it is straightened out in the Ball Cousins. Thanks for the input. Susan

    2. Linda Sparks Starr
    3. Nancy and list, I assure you NONE of the BALL researchers are going to laugh at someone trying to sort them all out! I'm glad Mrs. Kinsey did the groundwork for me and I followed up by ordering some wills -- all transcribed in a pre-Windows program so I can't cut / paste to share. I do plan to retype when I get a chance. All you BALL buffs out there, don't you laugh!!!! :-) I'm trying to get all the BALL families 'somewhat' documented for my database, The William Ball who married Martha Brumfield -- per _Ball Cousins_ by Margaret Kinsey, 1981 TX -- had these children: 1. John b. 2 Oct 1742 Pennsylvania d. 1806 Warrenton, Virginia. He married Sarah Ellen Payne of Stafford Co. VA 6 Nov. 1767. [I plan a future message to the list about him -- with questions -- this is my direct line.] 2. Susannah b. early 1740s in PA d. by 1826. She married 1st Robert Fisher and 2nd Peter Kemper 18 Oct 1788 Fauquier Co. VA -- Kinsey page 170. Her children all with Fisher. June 1774 Robert Fisher purchased land on west side main branch of Licking run adj. (the above) John Ball. Robert d. before 18 Oct 1788 when Susannah married Kemper. 3. Thomas b. 1754 PA d. 1 March 1820 Lincoln Co. Kentucky m. Mary Reed 1781 in KY [ ? that part of VA that became KY] Kinsey pages 191-193 4. Elizabeth b. 6 Sept 1756 d. 2 Aug 1797 m. Isaac Supples 13 May 1777 [_PA Pioneer_ by Gans for specific dates -- p. 204 Kinsey] 5. Sarah d. bef 9 March 1829 Montgomery, PA m. John Daniels 20 July 1775 Kinsey page 189 -- death date from date her will was probated 6. Martha d. 1791 m. Moses Yocum [Kinsey quotes _A Pennsylvania Pioneer_ by Gans, p. 131 for Martha's death date] They lived in the Upper Merion twp of Montgomery County PA in 1787 adjacent Isaac and Elizabeth Supplee. [p. 208 Kinsey] 7. William b. 1762 d. 1800 m. Ann Keas 9 Feb 1788 Fauquier Co. VA [note: she possibly Mary Ann Keas] Kinsey p. 166: Ann Keas was the daughter of Margaret Keas; Isaac Keas was witness to marriage bond. This William MIGHT BE the one who started an iron furnace in Falmouth, VA and died before he finished -- his son had to complete it. Again, Mrs. Kinsey used the distribution of Joseph Ball's estate (died intestate 28 April 1821 Philadelphia and without children) in sorting through the various BALL kin. Those wanting part of his 'million dollars' had to prove (to the various lawyer's satisfaction) their connection back to his aunts and uncles. The William Ball who married Martha Brumfield was an uncle to Joseph Ball, the millionarie. Linda

    3. Ok, then, I need someone to tell me which William Ball married Frances Slaughter in Culpeper c 1730, and which William Ball had son Wiliam who moved to SC and m1 Lilly Hitt and m2 Sarah Martin (as per one of the several BALL charts floating around)? And, did Samuel's Margaret marry John Barrow as stated in Va Gen's? (Evidence, please, not guesses, hearsay or assumptions.) All you BALL buffs out there, don't you laugh!!!! :-) I'm trying to get all the BALL families 'somewhat' documented for my database, so I can make sure mine don't get confused with the wrong lines(there are many)....but I'm not actively researching them all, so I depend on you all who are.
