There is a Three-Mile Mountain in Shenandoah County. A photo showing "Three Mile Mountain. View is toward the east from cliffs on North Mountain near the W.Va. State line. Massanutten Mountains in far distance" is available at http://toto.lib.unca.edu/findingaids/photo/usfs/usfstable.asp?Pagenum=12
Could anyone help me locate Three Mile Mountain? I found this referenced in some Land Grants dating back to the Fairfax Proprietary. Since the Fairfax Proprietary encompassed a vast amount of land, this mountain may have been renamed or is in anouther county. I have the Virginia Atlas & Gazatteer and have not found it. Thanks, Estelle
Ginger, Checking some of my reference books for the surrounding counties, I find one William FOLEY as follows: Clark County, Virginia FOLEY, MOSES, 29 years of age, single, born in LOUDOUN co. Wonder if any one could give any information on the Catherina Ball and William Foley family mentioned here and the James Foley of a previous posting on the Ball family. "Cartmell's History" lists John S. BALL being on the Frederick County, VA Court as a Justice from 1795-1813. (Page 105) Listed also among those Justices were the following surnames associated with the BALL names in my previous postings: John SMITH, Chas. SMITH, Edward SMITH, Joseph GAMBLE, James SINGLETON, Bushrod TAYLOR, Jacob HEIRONIMUS, James WARE, Mandley TAYLOR, Griffin TAYLOR, Robt. VANCE. (There were a number of other Justices for that period; but I did not list them since they did not appear to connect with the preivous BALL postings). Page 444 The BALL Family The first appearance of this family in the old county was in 1772, when Jasper BALL came from LOUDOUN COUNTY, and purchased a tract of 86 acres. The following year he purchased an adjoining tract on Morgan's Marsh. He doubless was the father of WILLIAM BALL who died in 1796, who by his will disposed of his estate between his childre, viz Wm. Payner, Thomas Kemp, Judith THROCKMORTON, Betsey HENRY, and Nancy BALL. The latter was the wife of Martin CARTMELL, of Homespun, 1808. Judith T. was the wife of Genl. SINGLETON, 1797/ Betsey married Geo. SMITH, 1790. Other marriages appear, evidently of same family, and are mentioned for the benefit of some descendants: Sally BALL married Samuel CONNOR, 1789; WILLIAM BALL married Drucilla SINGLETON, 1790. Phebe BALL married William MORGAN, 1795; Frances married M. FAUNTLEROY, 1809; Lavinia BALL married Josiah MASSIE, whose daughter married Mr. Gamble BAKER. Everyone, I spent some time yesterday extracting the data on John and William Balls from several of John Gott's transcription of court records -- from the CD I purchased a few years ago. I discovered more John and Williams than I knew about. The John Ball on Licking Run with wife Sarah Ellen is the son of William Ball and Martha Brumfield. Who is the other John Ball d. 1778? And who is the William Ball Gent dec'd by 1777?? Where does Capt. William Ball of Frederick Co. fit? Here's a chronological listing of the more important listings for William and John only. 1768 -- William Ball witness to several leases Lord Thomas Fairfax to xxxx -- other witnesses James Scott, William Ransdell, J. For those of you on the list Dr. William McCarty has a book he is CO-editing with Kathleen Much on the McCarty family. In a recent E-mail I was told it is at press. From the small part of the book sent to me, it promises to be well researched. I do not have information on price or on ordering but hope to. Margaret Margaret R. Has the will for Sarah Ball of Prince William County been found? She first married Dennis McCarty and married a second time to Abram Barnes. Her father was William Ball and she was second cousin to George Washington. I'm told her will was never found. Some of their children lived in Fauquier: son Dennis McCarty and wife Sinah Ball.

I have not done any BALL research to speak of, and I've scanned the posts about the BALL family lately. My BALL connection is Ann (Anne) BALL, who married Col. Edwin CONWAY III b. abt 1681-1684 Lancaster Co., I think. Hal EUSTACE said that she was the daughter of Col. Joseph BALL b. 1649 England d. 1711 Lancaster Co., Va. I have Col. William BALL d. 1669 as Col. Joseph's father. Is anyone else researching this part of the BALL family? Am I correct on these? I need dates and places on Ann (Anne) and info on Col. William, born in England and died in England? Who did he marry? Velma

The exact year of William Ball's birth is not known. He was probably born while his parents, John and Sarah (Rhoades ) Ball lived in Plymouth twp,PhiladelphiaCo.(Quakers) There were birth dates in Gwyneth Monthly Meeting records for two of his sisters, Sarah in 1712 and Hannah in 1715. Since John Ball; w b 1720,and Williams' brother, John Ball was a bondsman in the administration of the estate of their father, it can be assumed that John was the older of the two brothers. William Ball married Martha Brumfield (C) 1741. She was the daughter of Thomas and Susannah Brumfield of Amity township, Penna. According to her, the son of William Ball / Martha Brumfield "of > Pennsylvania" is Capt. John Ball (1742 - 1806) who married Sarah Ellen > Payne. Their son, John, married Alcey Withers and moved to Breckinridge > County, Kentucky. In the 1850s descendants received money from the estate > of Joseph Ball of Pennsylvania, which provides the background for Mrs. > Kinsey's work. Linda
