If you have a WRIGHT line that doesn't appear to connect to the Virginia Wrights, this may be a clue where to look. On page 66 of Ellsworth Marshall Rust's book, "Rust of Virginia", there is this entry for a Rust / Wright connection. " Mrs. S A Melins, widow of Esley Melins, writing from 439 10th Street, South Brooklyn, New York, Date 9 Aug 1887, she says: My brother W H Rust called this morning. We are not well informed as to our genealogical record on the Rust side. Our father, Samuel Rust, was the youngest of seven brothers, all the rest of whom died without heirs excepting Clement Rust whose descendants now reside in Delaware in the vicinity of the reailroad that passes thru the state near FArmington, I believe. Our father was born 1797 and died in Delaware 1871 on his homestead there. For many years he was a resident of New York City where he invented and manufactured the Washington Printing Press referred to in Harper's Magazine for the year 1875. He married a New Yorker, Miss WRIGHT, who died leaving three daughters and one son, John W Rust, now deceased. The daughters married Sarah A Rust to a Mr. Esley Melins of New York City, who died suddenly in Dallas, Texas, ten years ago. He was at the head of a wholesale shoe store in New York. His second marriage, a Miss Rowe, cousin to his first wife, who was from Dutchess County, NY. Three daughters and two sons, the result of this marriage. One son, W H, the other Samuel of Cincinnatti. After her death, he contracted a marriage when a very old man with a young girl. She is now remarried and we know nothing of her whereabouts or her family. Mr Peter N Rust, now deceased who was in Baltimore, was our father's double cousin, fathers were brothers and mothers were sisters. (Author's Note: Mrs Melins evidentally refers to 50A25 - Peter Newton Rust, whose father, 4-A8- John Rust had wife, Sally Jackson. It was his grandfather # 350 John Rust, who was brother of # 351 Peter Rust, according to the best available evidence.) Continuing, Mrs Melins writes: My Grandmother's name was Sarah A Jackson. Her father a surgeon in the English Navy, whilst grandfather, Peter Rust, was on the Continental side, advancing goods and produce for the service of the Continental Army. After the war he was tendered the Continental money used at that time, but it amounted to nothing." To all Fauquier "listers" : I'm very interested in learning whether anyone knows of any plat type land maps (showing ownership of land, and owners names) of Fauquier County 1800 or prior ?? (I haven't heard of any such maps, but maybe some of you have). I have a copy of the Eugene Scheel map, and through the gracious assistance of a list member I recently obtained a copy of Josiah Dickinson map locating land some leases/ownership within the Manor of Leeds (basically prior to 1800). The section of Fauquier County in which I am most interested would be along the course of Goose Creek, as it flows from its' headwaters in Manassas Gap just west of Linden, into Loudoun County (at about 5 miles west of Middleburg; or a mile west of the former Atoka). If there are any such, please advise a source for the maps. Thanks very much !

I am descended from a JAMES SMITH who was living in Montgomery Co., Va. about 1800. Does anyone have the line of the James Smith mentioned below? Could it be the same one? Anyone know who James (below) married? Thanks, G. Lee Hearl >>>>>>> The estate of Augustine SMITH Sr. was divided in 1781 between Joseph, Thomas, Matthew, John, James, William, Augustine Jr. (who m. Susannah Darnall), and the youngest who all happened to be sisters, Susannah, Anna and Elizabeth.<<<<<<<<<<, G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
Jim, I know you've had other replies. But, I just recently did some digging on these folks and thought I'd chime in once before I go into Christmas hibernation.... The estate of Augustine SMITH Sr. was divided in 1781 between Joseph, Thomas, Matthew, John, James, William, Augustine Jr. (who m. Susannah Darnall), and the youngest who all happened to be sisters, Susannah, Anna and Elizabeth. There were three CHILTON brothers, George, Thomas and Joseph. They were the sons of John Chilton and Lettice Blackwell. George m. (1792) Mary Ball, d/o John. Thomas m. Jane Corbin, wrd/o John Blackwell. Joseph m. Ann Smith, d/o Thomas Smith, dec'd. (son of A. Sr. and Bro. of A. Jr.) The three CHILTON brothers had two sisters - Lucy, who married Wm. Ransdell, and Nancy, who married Augustine Smith (III). This Augustine Smith was the son of Thomas Smith, the son of Augustine Sr and the brother of Augustine Jr. I pieced this together with a variety of books containing extracts of records, such as Fauq. Families, Gott's marr's book, etc. -Nancy -----Original Message----- From: Jim Burgess [mailto:jim@promobiz.biz] Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2003 12:27 PM To: VAFAUQUI-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VAFAUQUI] Augustine son of Augustine SMITH & Ann "Nancy" MARSHALL Dear Fauquier County, Virginia Genealogist Nancy CHILTON was born 20 Oct 1771. My notes show that Augustine & Ann Smith's son, Thomas, married Elizabeth Adams. Their son Augustine married Ann "Nancy" Chilton. Augustine & Susanna (Darnall) Smith had a son Thompson Smith who married Polly James. I do not have any information that I consider definite on any of his children. Augustine & Susanna Smith's children were: Mary Muse Smith (1781 - ) married Jeremiah Darnall, son Augustine Darnall Nancy Smith (1781 - ) married Dudley Bayliss Joseph D. Smith (1783 - ) married Mary Lyons Thompson Smith (1785 - ) married Polly James Darnall Smith (1788 - ) married Jane Brady Marshall Smith (1790 - ) married Mary Ann Smith Wilford (or Wilfred) (1793 - ) married Mary Elizabeth George Louisa Ann Smith (1799 - ) married Charles Burris Smith (f. wm. Smith, m. Nancy Ann Ashby): I have their children listed as Jane "Jenny" B Smith (1837 - 1874) m. William Adams Cury Adelia J. Smith (1822- 1865) m Nimrod T. Ashby Thompson L. Smith (1823 - ) m Emily Louisa Ann Smith (1828 - ) m. James McDonald Briggs Joseph D. Smith m. Martha Leonard SO - I'm not sure if the Thompson L. Smith you referred to is the son of Augustine & Susannah, or Charles and Louisa. If you look at the dates you listed, if Thompson was married in 1808, their son couldn't have married anyone in 1798. BUT - I have the son of Augustine & Ann Marshall Smith, Thomas, as the father of the Augustine that married Ann "Nancy" Chilton. I would be interested in seeing your information and/or documentation, as perhaps I am misunderstanding your response. I have received several emails of the same. Is there something wrong with the site? It keeps repeating itself.
The Moses Green marriage to Mary Blackwell was listed in the Fauquier County Marriages by John K. Gott. The Moses Green that I posted from Culpeper County was from the book Green's Notes. I passed this on, because it was asked about Moses Green/Green's being involved with the Blackwell's and being back and forth from Culpeper & Fauquier. I am not related, but thought I would past on the information I found from my sources. On the Fauquier County marriages there were many Green's. June
The Moses GREEN who was appointed guardian to his minor children was not the same Moses GREEN that married Mary BLACKWELL. This Moses GREEN was the husband of Harriet BASYE, daughter to James BASYE and Elizabeth TAYLOR. Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph TAYLOR and Peggy ?. Peggy TAYLOR died in Fauquier county around 1831, devising property to the children of Moses GREEN. As they were minors, Moses had to come to the Fauquier court to be appointed guardian on their behalf. His son, Aylette GREEN, was my husband's greatgrandfather. This Moses GREEN was one of the thirteen children of William GREEN and Mary ? of Culpeper county and the grandson of James GREEN and Elizabeth TAPP. I have found no connection between this James GREEN family and the Robert GREEN line of Culpeper, although they share many of the same given names.
