    3. Does anyone know who G.A. Marshall of Fauquier Co. was? I have a copy of documents from Fauquier Co. Land Causes 1833-1850 in which it appears he was trying to evict the legal tenant of a Leed's Manor lease, using names of "John Doe" and "Richard Roe" in the eviction notices. Thanks, Sandra

Does anyone have factual or informed knowledge about the following. I have just finished several days with some Fauquier Deed Books, and I'm curious as to whether or not it makes sense to assume patterns of blood relationship, friendship, or whatever from noting the names of people executing leases (as the grantee) and the names of the individuals witnessing the signing of the lease. There are some obvious situations where the surnames are the same, but how about the less obvious ones (but where you see approx the same combinaions on several different leases). Where several individuals (but with different surnames) sign leases on the same day, for adjoining tracts, etc. In view of travel distances and time required to travel, & the relatively low frequency of leasing activity, it seems more than coincidence (to me) when several individuals sign on the same day and for the same area. Of course, too, it could be totally random ... "You're here so how about witnessing this lease (since we have no others available to be witnesses)". Further, there was a the matter of "proving" the signatures before the County Court at the time the recording of the deed was accomplished. I'm uncertain of the exact procedure for this, but it seems to have required an appearance at the site where the court was sitting and a swearing before the court, which would have required a lot more time than just "witnessing" a signing. Well, perhaps I've made my question(s) clear. What are the logical assumptions/conclusions which can be "assumed" ..... or does one just try to check out all possibilities. ______________________________

    3. We found your e-mail very interesting as we have a Moses Henry as bondsman for the marriage of William Gordon and Jane Watkins in 1791. They lived in Shenandoah County and probably on a tract of land in Lord Fairfax's Proprietary. How have you traced Enoch Henry to Ohio with several other families from Virginia? Please e-mail me off the list for more discussion. 3. I'm researching a Henry family that I understand may have lived for some time in Fauquier Co. Enoch Henry was born in 1780 in Shenandoah Co., VA most likely to Moses Henry b. 1754 who enlisted in the Rev. War in Shenandoah Co. according to his pension file. In 1783 Moses, and Aaron, and Samuel show up in the Shenandoah Co. tax list. Aaron Henry married Harriet Rutter the daughter of a Hezekiah Ritter/Rutter also believed to have lived in Fauquier Co. prior to going to Shenandoah. Moses was probably married before moving to Shenandoah. There is no record of him marrying there. I believe Hezekiah Ritter or Rutter lived in Charles Co., MD before moving to Fauquier Co. Enoch Henry eventually (1806) moved to Ohio with several other families from Virginia, (Decker, Ritter, Bell, Corder, Lewin, Renick, Spitler, Hite, etc., etc., etc.). Anything anyone can do to point me in the right direction will certainly be appreciated. Thank you.

    2. Just a small warning when using Chalkley's Chronicles. The sub title has Scots-Irish in it and so do not assume it is all inclusive. He does leave out a great deal of information especially on the Germans who were in the valley. Margaret R. 1. [VAFAUQUI] James Jeffries leased land from Thomas Massie 24 April 1793
    2. Joseph E. Lake
    3. Hello list.... are there any Jeffries researchers on the list ? James Jeffries (wife Hannah, sons John & Elias) leased 250 acres (out of a tract of 993 acres, lying on Goose Creek in Fauquier Co, VA) from Thomas Massie on 24 April 1793. I'm trying to locate that 993 acre tract, because my ancestor (Vincent Lake), Benage Grubbs and Archibald McLaren also leased land (29 Dec. 1787) from Massie in the same tract. While I have found the above 4 sub-leases (3 of them several years ago), I cannot find the basic lease for the 993 acres. I have assumed the tract was near Linden (apparrently incorrectly) and that the land was leased from Lord Fairfax in the Manor of Leeds. The tract may be, however, further downstream (east towards Upperville) on Goose Creek, outside of the Manor of Leeds. I have looked at all of the Massie Leases in Fauquier Deed Books 9, 10 & 11 without success (as I recently learned, 5 of the Massie leases have Manor of Leeds tract numbers in the Josiah Dickinson book, but none of them are for the 993 acre tract). I'm sort of hoping that there might be a Jeffries researcher on the list who is smarter than I am (or just possibly "luckier"), and who knows where the lease may be found (or better yet where the land is in terms of todays geography). Actually a lot of you must be smarter than I am, so if you have any ideas how/where to look for the 993 acre lease, please chime in. Thanks and Happy Valentines Day.

    2. G. Lee Hearl
    3. To All: I am searching for anything, no matter how small, on EDWARD HARRELL, HARROLD etc. in Lancaster and surrounding counties between 1680 and 1750. Edward Harrold, Harrell married Margaret Brumwell in Christ Church Parish in 1707 and is reported to have children named; Thomas, Edward, Judith and Mary. All were born before 1725. Judith married William Green, Mary married __Hutson. Years later (date unknown) a letter was written stating that Edward Harrell, Harrold had disappeared and had been gone 30 or 40 years. He apparently owned a farm and had left it, not selling it or disposing of it. In 1729 an Edward Harrell buys a tract of land in Nansemond County, Va. near the North Carolina line. I am attempting to learn if both Edward Harrells are the same person. Any Information, Clues and Suggestions Appreciated! G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.

    3. For the new researchers who are interested in Virginia, I want to recommend Chalkley's Chronicles. They mostly cover old Augusta Co Virginia. That county covered a lot of today's counties. There are three volumes. At the beginning of each volume, scroll to the bottom of the volume to locate the index for a quick look at particular surnames. Least you miss one you have not thought of, maybe you will want to put this URL in your favorites icon and go through all of them eventually. http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/ I simply go on the internet and type in Chalkley's Chronicles and it comes up. Interesting site. Ginny Keefer
