    3. To all listers: Don'tt be too concerned if you do not find your ancestor on this web site: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html It is a great source, but not all inclusive. My gr grandfather was in the civil war, but is not on the National Park Service list. I have gotten his Civil War information from other sources ie, Civil War Service Records which are taken from the National Archives. To Janean: I really did enjoy browsing the site as there is a lot of information about the various battles and campaigns. A lot of great reading, if you're interested. Thanks for bringing this site to my attention! Barbara Missouri

    1. [VAFAUQUI] The Rappahannock River Runs Free
    2. Note: I think this dam was located about ten miles southeast of Goldvein in the "far corner" of southeast Fauquier County. After 150 Years, Rappahannock Runs Free By Michelle Boorstein Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, February 23, 2004; 3:12 PM FREDERICKSBURG, Va., Feb. 23 -- The Rappahannock River ran free today for the first time in 150 years after a long-planned explosion put a hole in the base of the Embrey Dam near here, letting trapped water break away and returning the river nearer to its natural state. The blast, witnessed by a carnival-style crowd of 5,000 to 6,000 people, sent a cloud of brown smoke into the sky. It was followed by a great roar, as the water made its escape. It took two blasts, rather than one, to do the job. On the first try, only about a tenth of the 650 pounds of plastic explosive attached to the structure went off. It sounded more like a car backfiring than the blast the crowd had come to see. Considering the hundreds of pairs of earplugs that had been handed out for the occasion, the initial explosion came as something of an anti-climax. The second try, an hour and a half later, did the job. "Now that's more like it," said John Tippett, executive director of the advocacy group Friends of the Rappahannock. The explosion began the process of removing the concrete dam, which was built in 1910 to replace a wooden crib dam just above it and to provide electricity to Fredericksburg. The complete demolition of the dam, which stopped producing power in the 1960s, is scheduled to take place in 2006. The event brought out crowds rarely seen in this small city. Roads were closed off and many children were not in school for the blast, which meant the demise of one of the last relics of the city's industrial era. Tippett and others who came to see the explosion were elated at the prospect of migratory fish being able to make their way up the river to the Blue Ridge Mountains for the first time since 1854. For boaters, the demolition eventually will mean shooting the white water instead of portaging canoes and kayaks around the dam. Alan Weaver, of Virginia's Game and Inland Fisheries Department, said the dam's demise will make the Rappahannock the longest free-flowing river in the Chesapeake Bay watershed--184 miles from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the bay. Among those attending was U.S. Sen. John Warner (R-Va., ) who is credited with helping the project get full federal funding of more than $10 million for the blast and removal of the dam. But for most of the people who waited for hours on a brisk but sunny day, the event was all about watching an explosion and reminiscing about the times they've had on the river. Vendors sold out of T-shirts that said, "Let the River Run Free." A woodworker was selling $1,500 carved mantel pieces made out of bits of the original crib dam, which was partially dismantled by a crane last year. "It's pretty, and you get used to seeing it," Susan Sompayrac, 43, said of the Embrey Dam. She grew up in Fredericksburg and remembered playing as a teenager on the catwalk that runs along the dam beneath the water. The dam has not been that accessible in years. Nor has it been useful since it ceased generating hydroelectric power. It had become instead a major hazard on the Rappahannock, advocates of the demolition said. © 2004 The Washington Post Company

    2. Jim Bartlett
    3. Ginny; Thank you very much for all your effort in posting this information. I have some of it, but not all, and every bit counts. If there is anyone interested in the BARTLETT family's brief stay in Fauqier Co, VA (1768-1785), I'd like to correct some of the printed info: 1777 Will was for Sanford CARROLL (not Carvell) - one interesting item is that it was witnessed by James BARTLETT who may have been Thomas BARTLETT's brother (both being born in Richmond Co, VA). The James who married 1790 Sarah PHILLIPS wasn't born until early 1770s. John BARTLETT married 1780 Sarah BARKLEY, dau of William BARKLEY [whose parent's I'd really like to learn[ The Thomas BARTLETT who married 1777 Sarah CARROLL was Thomas Sr c1730-1806 (as his 2nd wife, Anne, having died a few years earlier, leaving Thomas with 10 children, only 4 of whom had married.) The 1748 acres Thomas bought of Judson Cooledge in 1772 for 400 pounds Sterling, was just to the NW of The Plains. Thomas and Ann sold much of it, keeping 538 acres, 104 of which he later gifted to his son William, and then sold the rest in 1784, before moving to Harrison Co, VA in 1785. I'll have to contact Robin Bryson... Thomas BARTLETT bc1705; will probated 6 Oct 1783 in Lunenburg Par, Richmond Co (still in Richmond Co); lived where the Richmond Co town of Newland is today. She is mixing up this Thomas BARTLETT with the Thomas BARTLETT who lived in King George Co, married the widow Elizabeth JONES, and left a will there in 1748 - so could not have been the same as the Thomas BARTLETT of Richmond Co. Thomas & Elizabeth in Richmond Co had James and Anis births recorded in the North Farnham Par Register, and the death (not birth) of Frances in 1727 (probably died at birth/as infant). I believe the other children were also born to Elizabeth because every child's family has an Elizabeth and no Catherine. Catherine was certainly a second wife. Of the children of Thomas and Elizabeth in Richmond Co: John married Anne SETTLE (dau of neighbor Henry) and went up the Rappa R. to Culpeper Co by 1750 (became John BARTLEY); Thomas also married an Anne (maiden name UNK) abt 1750, and they were in Fau! quier Co by 1768 (where were they 1750-68??); Elisha and the daughters all stayed in Richmond Co; I believe James went to Fauquier Co, but there are only a few records to indicate this possibility - I would love to find more of his family; and no one knows where Joseph went [although someone with a 25/25 DNA match to me can trace his BARTLETT line back to SC in 1790...] I am the author of the BARTLETT Family News back in 1970s. I've tweaked a few of the estimated birth years a little and now have Sanford BARTLETT b late 1777/early 1778 - he died in 1817 Winchester, VA, having served as officer in War1812. Also William BARTLETT b1756 is now recognized by DAR as a Patriot for public service in Fauquier Co (along with his brothers John and Benjamin who were in uniform) Always looking for descendants of this family... and more records - particularly 1750-1768... 1. [VAFAUQUI] Early "rent rolls"
    2. Marty Hiatt
    3. Many of the original rent rolls (as compiled by the agents of Lord Fairfax) are held in original form by the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. The Library of Virginia has copies of several. I don't know what, in the way of rent rolls, is available in Warrenton. NVG just published a 1766 tax list, but it deals with just part of the county. Last night I saw a Fairfax County rent roll that had been recorded in a deed book (abstracted by Sparacio). The RELIC room in Manassas has photocopies of several rent rolls for Prince William County. Keep in mind that these were compiled by geographic areas, concerned only a limited amount of property, and one rent roll never covered the entire county. Those names are not surname1 and surname2. The person was given a family name as his first name. By family name, I mean surname. It could have been given in honor of a relative, or the local preacher, doctor, whatever. But it was used as the man's first name. Virginians were very fond of this practice. Willoughby Newton, Newton Edwards, Landon Carter, the list could go on forever.... The commissioners of revenue were not interested in family connections, but they wanted to be sure they went to the correct man to collect the taxes due on a specific piece of property. Therefore, if there was more than one man with the same name in the vicinity (and believe me there were several with the same name) John Wilson son of Jeremiah, would have been styled John of Jeremiah, to distinguish him from John, son of Sampson. Or, locations could be used. Withers Smith B. R., or Withers Smith Mtn. meant he lived on the Blue Ridge, rather than John Smith who lived in town. One of his other sons, John Bartlett, married Anne Settle and moved abt 1760 to Culpeper Co VA and then abt 1791 to Fluvanna Co where he died in 1807. 1. Re: [VAFAUQUI] Early "rent rolls"
    2. Family History Library in Salt Lake City lists 30 reels of film of land records, including indexes [grantor and grantee] for Fauquier Co., VA, ranging in years from 1759 to 1914. See for yourself. www.familysearch.org Link to catalog is in lower right corner. Click on that, do a Place search for fauquier, virginia, go down list of topics to Land and Property. When the proper topic appears, look at the top "view film notes" Happy hunting! Thanks for differentiating rent rolls from tax rolls. I'm not too familiar with rent rolls. I have seen a published list of 1704 rent rolls, but the counties in which I am interested are not listed. E.W.Wallace

    3. Before this goes much further... Rent Rolls are not tax lists, nor were tax lists necessarily compiled from rent rolls. I would suggest a review of Alcock's "Fauquier Families" in which he has abstracted the the tax year information and generalized location of the individual. There are other references as well. Some of the Fairfax rent roll information too is available in various references. If you really want to learn more of location, the county Land Books are invaluable, giving status (Fee Simple), distance and direction (compass heading) from the court house, and nearest major watercourse. I'm unsure if the Land Books have ever been filmed though. jb -- Please visit "The Ball Family of Carter's Run" http://web.raex.com/~jdball
