Could someone working or have worked on Dodd family contact me privately. The reason is: My late husband thought there was a problem with computer genealogy which I typed in from some records we had. I want to verify the families/people I typed in are correct, before giving this out to my late husband's family. Just don't want to add any more misinformation. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Rebecca Bashaw
Does the name either Richard Turner or Frederick Turner in 1890-1900 ring the bell? If it does, please contact me and identify him. I would like to know more about him, for he may or may not have been connected with my ancestor William Toliver Turner, but it would be worth a try to find out who Richard / Frederick Turner is. My cousin James has sent me the following information about Richard/Frederick Turner as follows. My ancestor William Toliver Turner's widowed wife Martha Jane (White) Turner moved from Waterloo, Fauquier Co. VA to Washington, D.C. in or just before 1891 at the age of 75. At first, my cousin and I did not know why she and some of her children moved to Washington, D.C. After my cousin's research, we now think we will find out why soon if we dig more deeply about Richard Turner. He says that the Polk Directories for Washington, D.C. lists Mrs. Martha Turner as a resident at 1205 4th Street, SE from 1891 to her death in 1904. From the same source, he just so happened to come across another Turner that resided on the very same block -- "Frederick Turner, 1225 4th Street, SE." To know more about Frederick Turner, yy cousin decided searched for the Frederick Turner in the 1900 Federal Census and located him under the name "Richard Turner" at the very same address (no "Frederick"). Richard and his wife and children were born in Maryland (source: Wash. DC 1900 census, Roll #164, ED #133, p. 258). Since listed at the same address, we believe that Richard's middle name is probably "Frederick". What I know for a fact is that my great-grandmother was born at Dorcas (Turner) Clarkson's granddaughter Mrs. Eliza Steptoe (Clarkson) Marshall's home. Dorcas was herself a native of Charles County, Md, moving to Fauquier Co. Va. in the late 1770s. I looked at the map and, true enough, Charles Co. Md. is near both VA and MD. A number of you have expressed interest in the Kemper family and in the other Germanna families into which [whom?] they married. If you are near an LDS Family History Center, you may wish to borrow filmed versions of some of the genealogies of some of these families. (With the Kemper family, you will have to read in a hurry, as the original book is VERY thick. I do not have a copy, but a library about 50 miles away from my home has it.) Go online to the www.familysearch.org website. The link to the FHL catalog is on the lower right (my preference). You can do a surname search. Type in Kemper [lower case OK] or Fishback or Utterback and see what comes up. Please know that some of these genealogies were compiled MANY YEARS ago (the Kemper genealogy was published in 1899, if memory serves) and as has been pointed out repeatedly on this website, much of those early genealogies are flawed. As with any printed source, you should double check with a primary [original] source if at all possible. We are so fortunate to have access to microfilms of original records (but other records are still being dug out of basements and attics of courthouses around the country.) There are several volumes of a Kemper genealogy, with different compilers of different eras, and Salt Lake City does not have all. One of the last lines of the description states that "library set is wanting v. 2 (1937) and v. 4 (1957/1958)." If a genealogy has been filmed, most of the time you can borrow the film, for a short time, for a small fee, through your local LDS center. I understand some public libraries have agreements with FHL for interlibrary loan, but I have not confirmed that. Ask your public librarian about such ILL. As volunteers at FHCs around the country caution genealogists: Begin with yourself, then your living relatives, and then work your way backwards in time. There are so many Kempers that you may do research on the WRONG line. (How many John Kempers are there? Countless.) Good luck! E.W.Wallace
I found some great information about Reuben Kemper that I'm posting here: From, Old Families of Louisiana, Alston & Pirrie Families, Pg. 193: "4. Solomon Alston, never married. As a captain in the Spanish troops he captured the Kemper brothers, who had led an ill-advised and unsuccessful revolt against Spanish rule at Tunica Bayou. The Kempers escaped their captors a few hours after their arrest and hounded Solomon to his death, brought about by sleeping night after night in a skiff on the Mississippi River to escape their fury. However, it was not his ears Ruben Kemper cut off and kept for several years in a bottle as a warning to everyone that it was unhealthy to trifle with anyone named Kemper." ****Supposedly, the Kemper brothers tracked down their captors and cut off the ears of one of them, pickled them and displayed them for many years at their tavern!!! From, Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Vol. II, Prominent Persons, Pg. 318: " Kemper, Reuben, born in Fauquier county, Virginia, in 1770, emigrated to Ohio in 1800 with his father, who was a Baptist preacher. He and his two brothers went later to Mississippi territory, engaged in land surveying, and were leaders in the movement to rid western Florida of Spanish rule. In 1808 they organized an expedition to Baton Rouge, from the adjacent counties of Mississippi, and were captured by the Spaniards. They were rescued by the United States troops at Point Coupe, and afterwards severely punished the Spaniards who had been engaged in their capture. Kemper was engaged in an unsuccessful attempt to capture Mobile; was one of the organizers of the expedition of Gutierrez and Toledo against the Spanish in Mexico; and in 1812, as major, and subsequently as colonel, commanded a force of about six hundred Americans who cooperated with Mexican insurgents. The expedition advanced into Texas, and several successful battles were fought, but the dissensions that followed between the Mexican and Americans enabled the Spaniards to defeat the divided forces, and the Americans, returned home. Kemper then joined the United States army as a volunteer, served under Andrew Jackson at the defence of New Orleans, and performed important duties. At the end of the war, he settled in Mississippi. He died in Natchez, Mississippi, October 10, 1826." From, Mississippi Territory in the War of 1812: "Reuben Kemper, one of three brothers, was a native of Fauquier County, Virginia. The brothers were frontiersmen of the type that made the Indian fighters and territory conquerors of America. They removed when very young to Pickneyville in the Mississippi Territory and were the leaders in an insurrection known as the Kemper Rebellion which finally culminated in the annexation of the Biloxi and Mobile Country to the Mississippi Territory." Also, Kemper County, MS was named for Reuben Kemper. What is the ancestry of Reuben Kemper? I think he is the same Reuben Kemper mentioned in BC's Ancestry and Descendants as the husband of Phoebe Coons, the son of Henry Kemper and the grandson of John Kemper, of the 1714 colony. Is this correct? Also, who is the wife of John Kemper? Is it Anna Catherina Utterback, daughter of Herman Utterback and Elizabeth Heimbach? Was Anna Catherina also married to Harman Fishback? Hi: I am a descendant of the FREEMAN family of Culpeper/Fauquier. My ancestor Jonathan FREEMAN had three sons.. James, who married Susan Frances KEMPER (dtr of EnocH), Jonathan Jr, who married Frances Hitt, and my ggg John who married Lydia EDGE, All three couples went to Ohio after 1820s. I would be happy to share information on any of these families. Particularly interested in the EDGE family. Patricia Minton Bettis

She died 1789 Fauquier Co., Va. Tilman WEAVER's mother was Anna, his wife's name was Anna, and his mother-in-law was Anna. Dear E.W. Wallace, I took a look in the Nassua-Seigen book by B.C. Holtzclaw, I own to which sadly to tell you there is nothing in there on your Reuben. Also to let you know, you also need to keep a look out for Camper/Kamper for Kemper as they are interchangeable depending on who was writing. You also need to go to Culpeper Co., Va website as there might be more Kempers there as this is county where they are located in. I hope this helps you. Good luck hunting! Regards, Rebecca Bashaw
Dear Ginny, Thank you for your help with finding this information for E.W Wallace. The Nassau Seigen book I have did not have this detailed information on Reuben. I will put in my late husband's Kemper file. Again thank you for the information. Regards, Rebecca Bashaw
The original records along with any consents and returns are still in the Fauquier record room and people get copies of them all the time. I am not aware of any typed transcript. The marriage indexes and records go from 1759 forward. I have copies from 1792 and 1806 of marriage bonds for a few of my husband's ancestors. The clerks are very helpful. Dear E.W. Wallace, My late husband was a Kemper descendant also. They are part of the Nassau Seigen folks living in Germana. If I remember correctly they have a website, just I have never been to it. I will look in husbands records & book on Naussau Seigen to see if Reuben is there. Just got back from church, will look up in a bit.
