I'm missing the "prior" or thread of this message dated 4/4/04 from E W Wallace. Maybe I missed an earlier message or its been reposted from some other place. The name "Comfort Oliver" is very interesting to me --I would like to know the context behind this message and see if there's a possible connection. There's a Helm-Oliver marriage about 1810, probably in Frederick Co altho this Helm family had a Fauquier Co connection. There appears to have been a daughter Comfort Helm about whom little is known. The first name "Comfort" is completely unique for the Helm family. Both Helm and Oliver families had many members in VA, KY, OH. (Benjamin Helm (1782-1837) m Lavinia Oliver (~1790-1873); their siblings are pretty well known; Helm family is well known; Oliver family history much less well known). Michael Helm Richmond CA
As a researcher of several counties in Kentucky [from Madison Co. westward and southward], I have found that frequently I am able to distinguish persons of the same surname from one another by referring to the land records, sometimes even from the grantor and/or grantee indexes alone--which, of course, whets my appetite to know more. Of course, with the females, unless they were rather wealthy, they frequently remarried, and the new husband took over the financial and land affairs. I see that the Family History Library has a number of films of deeds of Bourbon Co., KY. I have found that because modern-day searchers frequently use the land records (title searchers, attorneys, et al), these deed indexes are frequently typed and fairly easy to read, as most of the time [I found an exception in one county] these surnames are alphabetized in both the grantor and grantee deeds. One well-known researcher/author/lecturer has made the statement that about 90% of the white population of the US owned land, and therefore the land records are VERY important. In later years, commissioners deeds in KY help to answer relationship problems. Evidently this law came into effect in the 1830s, but seemingly not earlier. The court frequently appointed a commissioner to help the heirs settle their differences. When the survivors come to an agreement, then all the surviving heirs seem to sign the deed. I especially look for deed index entries which have the notations "& c" meaning others, et al, and Hrs [heirs] after the surname. Also, you want to look in the last columns as to whether there is a power of attorney. Frequently someone who lives out of the district/state gives someone a power of attorney, and it may be filed in the county in which it was executed. The power of attorney gives some information frequently about the residence of the maker of the power of attorney. Another clue: in the early land records/indexes, there frequently is a reference to a watercourse. For example, in Madison Co.: 100A on Otter Creek. Well, if you have time, collect all those folks on Otter Creek. You may find they are in-laws, cousins, uncles, grandpaws, etc, or they soon may be!!! Remember, folks didn't have great roads in those days, and their main transportation MAY have been creeks, rivers, etc. Not always, but frequently. How are you going to get that tobacco to market? I hope this may help you solve some genealogical problems. Oliver should be an easier name to research than Harris, Williams, Rose, which are only some of the common names in my families. (No, I cannot answer everyone who has a problem with a common surname--so don't ask!) E.W.Wallace
In 1787 and 1788, Comfort Oliver, a female head-of-household, was a taxpayer in Pittsylvania Co., VA with three tithables, Samuel Oliver, Joseph Oliver and Thomas Oliver. In 1789, a Comfort Oliver, female head-of-household, was a taxpayer in Fauquier Co., VA with Thomas Oliver, Samuel Oliver and William Oliver as tithables. In 1790, a Comfort Oliver, female head-of-household, was a taxpayer in Fauquier Co., VA with Samuel Oliver and Joseph Oliver as tithables. She was not listed again in Fauquier but in 1805, 1806 and 1808 a Comfort was listed as a taxpayer in Bourbon County, KY. The names Samuel, Thomas, Joseph and William Oliver appear repeatedly in Fauquier and Bourbon during and after these dates but I've been unable to separate them from other Oliver men of the same names. I would sincerely appreciate any information regarding Comfort and these Oliver men who might have been her sons. Willis Oliver -- Pat Oliver (Willis P. I'm seeking any information regarding the Rhoda OLLIVER/OLIVER who was listed in the 1810 Fauquier County Census as age 26-45 with three males age 0-10 and one female age 0-10. I can find no marriage or tax record for her nor can I identify any Oliver man listed in previous years but missing in 1810. Where was she married? What were the names of her children? Any help, including research suggestions are welcome. Willis Oliver -- Pat Oliver (Willis P. Hi Listers, This might not be a new query to some of you. I am seeking help or advice. I will be in Maryland next week to do research and this is my dilemma: [African-American Research] The information I have is from a copy of granddad's SSN Application, and that's all I have to go on. According to all the records I've gathered Oscar would have been 17 years old in 1900 and had probably left Virginia and gone to Doubs, MD. in 1896. He married Sophie Proctor in 1905 and resided in Buckeystown, MD where he stayed the remainder of his life. In 1925/26 he married his 2nd wife Sophie Lawson-Whalen. I was trying to seek his parentage, which his SSN Application states is Peter Baltimore JACKSON and Harriet THORNTON and that they were in Upperville, VA in 1883 when he was born. His Name on the SSN Application is Oscar Baltimore JACKSON. The 1910 census shows him as a General Farmer and the 1920 census shows him as a laborer for the steam railroad, with both locations being Frederick County, MD. I can't find him on the 1900 census and I do not know of any siblings. The court has no records on him (if I'm checking the right one). <smile> Everyone who has tried to help me says the same thing "He's GOT to be somewhere". Unfortunately he was a very closed mouth person and never talked about his family and for some reason his stepchildren never asked. My dad was the only child born of the second marriage. His first wife and he had three children Serena, Virgie and William. None are alive and I didn't know them. All stepchildren and my father are known to me, but none are of help. My father is the only sibling still alive. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Sincerely, Leona (Lee) Jackson Delaware
Dick, Thanks so much for the article by Dr. Adamson and a copy of Dr. Doniphan's will. His will poses a few questions doesn't it. What does "Polly Raiker's son Anderson designated to be my son" mean? Was he "like a father" or a biological father and not married to the mother? I have found my copy of a few pages from "Doniphan, Frazee Hamilton Families" sent to me by another researcher, Bill Bickell, who was researching Frazee, and on page 101 it states that Anderson Doniphan had "3 sets of children" implying (at least to me) three mothers. What do you think? Libby
How about doing a google.com search for *Doniphan family* [using quotation marks instead of asterisks] Perhaps you have already done this. I find the link to the University of North Carolina manuscripts is of interest. E.W.Wallace
Dick, Is your Dr. Anderson Doniphan the same who married Susannah Smith? Could you fill me in on the details of your particular Dr. Anderson Doniphan? Also, could you give us the Rootsweb link? Genealogy is a lot more fun than taxes! Bah. But you're right about why we're all so quiet. I'm taking a break. Two new surnames for me are Lomax and Green. Louis Lomax and Ann Green were the "supposed" parents of Lucy Lomax, born 1850-1855, in Fauquier County. Is anyone researching descendants of these people? They might be connected to Raleigh Lomax/Lomacher. Ms. Marty Hiatt, CGRS "Document what you find, listen to what you are told, and especially, love and respect your work." Hi List, Where is everybody? I miss reading all the emails. Pat
I am relaying to the list excerpts of a message I sent to Ken Smith regarding his William Smith who died in Lincoln Co. KY. There are some on this list who may benefit regarding this bit of background involving these two unrelated Smith families. On 16 Mar 2004 at 17:19, Ken Smith wrote: > Hello list, I am hoping someone can help me verify the information > below. I am backtracking my William Smith & son Reuben from Lincoln Co. > Ky. There were TWO William Smiths, both with wives named Margaret. The one in the Goose Creek area is the son of Thomas Smith and Ann Fowke. This William Smith died in Mason Co. KY. He had no son named Reuben. The other William, wife Margaret and son Reuben, appears to be living in the Licking Run area, near Cedar Run. This is the area where this Edward Ball lived. Jesse is Edward's son and he died shortly after this. Edward's younger brother James married Anna (Nancy) Smith, daughter of this William and Margaret. This William and Margaret later removed to Lincoln Co. KY where he died ca. 1821. There seems no connection between the two William Smiths. =/=/=/=/=/= I've been looking into these relationships and have traced down Thomas Smith. He is the son of Augustine and Susannah Smith of Gloucester Co. VA and the grandson of Col. Lawrence Smith and Mary (Debnam) of Gloucester. This Thomas Smith left records in King George, Culpeper, Fairfax, and Loudoun (formed from Fairfax). His Fauquier land which William inherited was likely recorded initially in Prince William, possibly through the Fitzhugh family. Thomas Smith was the 3rd husband of Anne Fowke Mason who was the daughter of Col. George Mason II and Mary Fowke. Anne Fowke Mason was first married to William Darrell (d. 1715) They were 1st cousins. They had a son Samson. Anne Fowke Mason next married Thomas Fitzhugh (d. 1719). Thomas and Anne Smith had three children: William, Susannah and Mary who married Simon Hancock of Loudoun in 1768. Thomas of course died testate in Fairfax in 1764. This is indeed Virginia aristocracy at it's highest level. The reference for all these relationships in depth, and required reading for Virginia Smith Family researchers: "Thomas Smith of Fairfax County, Virginia" by Henry G. Taliaferro. Pub. in "The Virginia Genealogist", Vol. 40, No. 1 (Jan-Mar 1996) William Smith (son of Thomas of Fairfax) left his will in Mason Co. KY in 1802 (Will Book 2, pp 549-550). I located a copy of this will in the following: Clift, G. Glenn; "History of Maysville and Mason County, Volume One"; Transylvania Printing Co. of Lexington KY (1936). In this will of 23 Jan 1802, William Smith names his entire family: wife - Margaret son - Robert dau - Anne Fook (sic) Doniphan dau - Susanna Doniphan (dec'd) dau - Mary Markham (dec'd) gdau - Mary Doniphan gdau - Susanna Doniphan, dau of deceased daughter Susanna sil - Anderson Donipahn sil - William Markham Mary Smith md William Markham in Fauquier VA 28 Jul 1789 and Susanna Smith md Anderson Doniphan 23 Apr 1791, also in Fauquier. So, there you have it. Back to the drawing board. =/=/=/=/=/= I have some theories which tie these Smiths of Gloucester VA to the ancestry of Gov. William "Extra Billy" Smith. This is contrary to the "Memoirs" of Gov. Smith, which were not written by him, but are the source of some "bad" genealogy handed down in the Joseph Smith (of the Great Run in Fauquier) family.
