I am looking for anyone researching the Samuel Porter family. I know, I know,........Which one you ask? Any of them. Associated names would be Withers, Arnold, Jett, Grayson, Heale, McCarty...... they all were connected in a roundabout way. There were wills of Samuel Porter dated: 1807; 1843; 1853. I'm looking for most likely Samuel Porter and Mary Withers and probably HIS father. I'm looking for Porter and Wilson connections, deeds, purchases, contracts anything associating the names. Janean
I've listed an 1851 Upperville, VA letter written by Wm A. Stephenson, on ebay. You can see more details and a photo at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=689&item=4164541544 Hope it helps someone with their research. Probably not of much use in the genealogical sense, as he writes about Cabbage seeds and Japan Varnish. Interesting that he mentions a theater. Anyone know of an old theater in Upperville? My gr gr grandparents, George F. and Sarah V. Alexander, are buried in the cemetery in Upperville. Tom Bishop
Is there a standard reference, or are lookups available, for county deaths in the 1875-1890 period? Thanks, Jim Tiller
As Fewer Cattle Tread, Horses Step In Equine Enthusiasm Prompts New Arena At Fauquier Exchange By Ian Shapira Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, April 20, 2004; Page B01 John Ameen and Jackie Boink were shopping at the Fauquier Livestock Exchange's monthly horse auction with a tight budget and strict specifications. The trainers from Leesburg and Purcellville needed a quiet, 6- to-10-year-old, something that looked flashy, could jump over a few logs, and would let cars go by without spooking at them -- something, in other words, they could sell to one of the many urban expatriates who have moved to Northern Virginia's hunt country for pleasure riding. But the 41-year-old livestock exchange, a white cinder block building streaked with rust stains, is better suited to the cattlemen who buy and sell cows and calves. It doesn't have a place where equestrians can get a really good look at a horse's gait or jumping ability before they plunk down their money. "It's really potluck what you get here," said Boink, watching a horse trot unevenly on a grassy field and driveway at last weekend's auction. "You have to believe whatever the seller tells you. It's a gamble." But now Northern Virginia's sole livestock exchange, faced with a shrinking local cattle market, is cozying up to the area's more prosperous equestrian clientele. Next spring, the exchange plans to open an indoor riding arena where horses can be shown more safely and more thoroughly. Performance sales not only will allow buyers to see horses in action but also will allow owners to set prices higher, increasing the exchange's 5 percent commission and its chances of surviving into the next decade. The arena is envisioned as the centerpiece of a larger equine one-stop shopping center to be developed on the 18-acre property in Marshall, about 50 miles west of the District and adjacent to the vast horse farms surrounding Middleburg and The Plains. A feed company, Tri-County Feeds, and a veterinary clinic, the Piedmont Equine Practice, also plan to open on the site next year. Moses, 1 Hugh ] born 22 Feb 1770, Carlisle, Cumberland Co PA, married 4 Jan. 1798 Elizabeth Wilson, born 15 Sept 1782, died 7 April 1857. James died 20 Oct. 1838, He moved to Abingdon, VA shortly after his marriage. He traded salt for valuable land in the TN River Valley. He contracted with a salt producer named James Sanders to buy all the salt that Sanders could produce, but Sanders built additional furnaces and produced unlimited amounts of salt. Salt piled up at Ditto's Landing in Madison Co. Records show that J.W. Lane traded a large tract of Limestone County land near Mooresville for 30,000 bushels of salt. Part of this tract was apparently Section 11, Township 5, range 4 west, which juts out into the Tennessee River. Milton White, son of James, sold this section to Luke Matthews. Matthews later willed the land and that adjoining it to his daughter, Lucy Spottswood Matthews. After Lucy's marriage to David Irvine White, the property was again in the White family. It is possible that Lucy, who lived in Huntsvlle, AL never visited this idyllic spot, called The Cave Place after a cave was discovered on the property. A log cabin, evidently built as a caretaker's cottage, formed the nucleus of the present structure, but it's date of construction is not now known. James White is said to have had fifty five mercantile concerns [including one at Gunter's Landing in present day Marshall Co.] at one time in Virginia, TN, AL and Georgia. Children; 1. Jane C. Lee Irvine White If anyone can connect William White born 10 Jan. 1755 Fauquier Co [actually was still Prince William Co VA until 1759] to this family, we would be very grateful. William fought in Rev. War from VA [ pension application no S1735 filed from Lincoln Co TN in 1832] and lived in old Rowan/Stokes Co NC for 30 years following the Rev War. He then relocated with many of his Moravian neighbors to Lincoln Co TN where they all appear in the 1820 census, [ Leatherman, Felps, Zimmerman to name a few]. William died in May , 1833 in Lincoln Co TN. His daughter married in Lin. Co TN was; Martha b 1814 Stokes Co NC md Samuel C. Miles, his sons; James Franklin b 1816, md Martha V. Payne, Carr Bailey White b 1818, md Martha Warren and Mary Elizabeth Watson and William Clark White md Polly Nixon and Eliza K. Wilkerson. These children were born by his then wife, Elizabeth ---- born NC. She was 20 years younger than William and he was aged 58 when their first child, Martha, was born. William surely married at the end of Rev War or shortly before, in Fauquier Co VA, and she prob. died in upper North West part of NC. Any clues to help us find the first wife and children would be greatly appreciated after all these long years of researching. The name Carr Bailey figures heavy in the child naming in our White family even to present date. This work would not be possible without the dedication and time spent collecting much of it by Paul. Julie: I originally thought she was an unweb mother (which may be the case) but then I found the attached document stating that son Joseph was killed in the Civil War. Patsy Ann is not living in the household of Jeremiah's Father in the 1850 census but is there in the 1860 census. Then she disappears .......I believe the James was my g-grandfather, he showes up in the Montgomery County, Md. census in 1880 (James Kendle) with his wife and children then he moved to Fayette County, Pa. and died in 1912. Any help would be so very much appreciated, Angela -----Original Message----- From: Julie Lofurno [mailto:quiltgirl62000@yahoo.com] Sent: Saturday, April 17, 2004 5:58 PM To: Angela Subject: Re: [VAFAUQUI] Kendall Family Angela, I'm sure you already know this, but I found Patsy Ann's 2 brothers (Thomas, age 20 and James, age 16 are in Fauquier Co., in 1870 (Scott Township) (p. 633). At least this appears to be them. There is also a Harry Kendall, age 15 in the hh, so maybe this isn't them, or maybe Harry was a relative? They are all three working and living in the household of Elzy Duncan, farmer. I have a stupid question......why is Patsy's Ann's son's last name "Kendall"? Do you think she married a cousin? Joe: I originally thought she was married to Jeremiah's son Joseph (he was killed during the Civil War). 1850 Census: There is no daughter Patsy Ann (but a Bettie (same age as Patsy) 1860 Census: There is Joseph and Patsy Ann in Jeremiah's household. Is there any way of finding out if they were married and what happened to Patsy Ann and son James after 1860? Thank you so very much for your assistance. Are you sure Patsy Ann is the daughter of Jeremiah? If Patsy's son James is a KENDALL, it seems that she would have married into the KENDALL family. Of course that is not always the case but it is the most likely. I'M GOING FISHIN' y'all. Some of you are probably real tired of me by now but sometimes persistence pays off. I'm looking for the families of Jacob Wilson b. 16 June 1774 in Chester Co. PA m. Margaret King of Union Co. Va. Margaret's mother was a Kearney related to Gen. Phil Kearney. I believe Jacob is the brother to my brick wall John Wilson b. 1772 that married Elizabeth Travers Chinn. Jacob and family were in Prince William Co. near Bull Run as that is where their son John M. Wilson was born in 1811. The other children were James L. Wilson; Oliver H.P. Wilson; R. Adaline Wilson; Mary Wilson (married William B. Shelby) and Jane Wilson. In 1824 the moved to Jefferson Co. Va. (W.Va.) and in 1828 they went to White Co. IL where they stayed with "cousin" Judge William Wilson of the Illinois State Supreme Court. I believe Judge Wilson was not so much a "cousin" but a nephew. Judge Wilson was b. 1794 in Loudoun Co. and married Mary S. DAvidson of Wheeling Va. (W.Va.) I believe his father could be a brother to my John and Jacob Wilson. I also believe that John's father's name is William based on the naming pattern they used back then. If that holds true then Jacob and John are not brothers unless Jacob's first born is not his first born because that would mean his father was John. Judge Wilson's is supposedly 1 of 2 or 3 boys whose father died when they were young and they were left poor to be raised by their mother. However Attorney John Cook took William Wilson under his apprenticeship. Letters written by Elizabeth Chinn Wilson (John's wife) reference twice to an Uncle Jacob Wilson. One of those letters was written to her son Rawleigh who at that time was in White Co. IL. Ruth Wilson Dillon who wrote the Chinn Book believes that Judge William Wilson and John Wilson were related somehow. Judge Wilson's son married a granddaughter of John Wilson's. Jacob's son John M. Wilson became the Clerk of the Circuit Court in 1841 of Richland Co. Illinois. Judge William Wilson's son John Cook Wilson and wife Mary Mears had the following: Mary Ellen (Mrs. A. Chapman) b. 1850; Susan D. (Mrs. James Shipley) b. 1852; William H. b. 1854; Lucy N. ( MRs. Chas Fazier) b. 1856; John C. Jr. b. 1858; Adaline (Mrs. Louis Cleveland) b. 1860; Gertrude A. b. 1865 other children of Judge Wilson are Dr. William H. Wilson; Robert Davidson Wilson; Charles J.F. Wilson; Phillip King Wilson; Mary Illinois Wilson; Margaret Eleanor Wilson; Thomas K. Wilson; Susan Jane Wilson and Byron Wilson. Hoping for bites....... thanks Janean
http://www.rootsweb.com/~vafauqui/lawva.htm While doing a search through Google for Samuel Massie I got a "hit" for the above link. I had never seen this page before...and it is extremely interesting. Jim, you did a good job! The marriage bond of William C. Blundell and Mary Polly Massie is included on the above site. It states Samuel Massie dec'd on the bond. The thing that some of us have discovered is that we do not believe Samuel Massie was deceased! It "appears" that his wife Tamer Cowgill, was deceased about 1799, and he went on to remarry a Catherine Farnsworth in 1801, sire more children, and ended up in Indiana, IF this is the correct and same Samuel. I wonder if the license/bond clerk was told "her father was Samuel and her mother was deceased" and the clerk wrote the record incorrectly. Samuel and Tamer had Sarah, Phineas, Samuel Jr, Mary Polly, & Lewis Massie between 1786 and 1799, but perhaps had married as early as 1780. Samuel and Catherine had Mordecai, Levi, Isaac, David, Phebe, Joseph & Ruth between 1803 (the first 3 before 1810) and about 1820. Samuel died 1845-1850, Catherine died 1861-1870. 1797 Samuel, Tamer and son Phineas bought land. Thomas and Nancy Ann White and Samuel and Tamer sold land in 1797in Fauquier. Could Nancy have also been a daughter of Samuel and Tamer? 1799 Samuel was co-executor of Will of James Cowgill (WB F p88, 24 Jan 1799) along with Ralph Cowgill, $2000. bond. Security William Carter and Robert Russell. 1808 son Samuel Jr married Sarah Suffrons in Jefferson Co, VA.. In 1809 Samuel and Catherine bought land in Loudoun Co. 1810 Jefferson Co, VA Census 3 0 2 0 1 and 1 2 2 1 0 that translates to: 3 M -10, 2 M 16-26, 1 M 45+ and 1 F -10, 2 F 10-16, 2 F 16-26, 1 F 26-45 (Catherine 29?) If so, Samuel is at least 50 (1840 census) and born 1760 or earlier. 1819 Mary Polly married Blundell in Fauquier Co, VA. 1820 Loudoun Co, VA Census 2 2 1 1 0 1 and 3 1 0 1 0 that translates to: 2 M -10, 2 M 10-16, 1 M 16-18, 1 M 16-26, 1 M 45+ and 3 F -10, 1 F 10-16, 1 F 26-45 (Catherine 39?) (1820 - 39= 1781 birth year) 1824 A Samuel Massie purchased property in the Estate sale of Lewis Lyder: 29 Nov 1824. 1830 August Loudoun Co, marriage license for daughter Phebe requested by Samuel and witnessed by sons Mordecai, Isaac and Levi. They also sold their land in Loudoun Co in 1830. After this, around late 1830 or early 1831 he and Catherine moved to IN. In March 1831 Samuel and sons Mordecai and Isaac bought land in Delaware Co, IN. In 1834 they sold this land and moved to LaPorte Co, IN. According to a marriage licence held in the Porter County Library, Valparaiso, IN, Samuel gave his minor daughter Ruth Massey permission to marry Abram Carmack in 1836 in Porter, IN, with Levi and David as witnesses. 1840 he and Catherine are believed to be in the household of their youngest son Joseph Massey. In the 1840 Census he is listed in the 80-90 year range. 1842 and in 1845 Samuel and Catherine sold land in LaPorte, IN to son Levi. 1850 Catherine was listed as still being in the household of Joseph and his family. Catherine is listed as being 79 years on the 1860 census in IN. Would anyone care to jump in with any additional info, or disputes of what I show at this point? I believe there would not be any records regarding orphans, since the father was not deceased; am I correct? There might be apprentice records. Are there any Farnsworth researchers who could join in? Thank you. Tosca
Kathy Bradley, please contact me. I've lost your address. Tosca may be a new Massie / Massey cousin. Thanks, Shirley Starks Sstarks@tampabay.rr.com
Happy Easter, Top of the Morning to you. Daniel Heath de Butts Squire of Kinsley Mills, Buckland, Va.
If I had searched my notes more thoroughly, I would have identified Mary Simpson nee Kincheloe, formerly of Fairfax Co., VA. As stated previously, she was the wife of Richard Simpson, Sr., who, in Fairfax Co., VA records is called Richard Simpson, Jr. Both Richard, Sr. and Mary died in Caswell Co., NC. These are a few of my notes on Kincheloe, said to be maiden name of Mary Simpson: JOHN KINCHELOE. (Ca. 1695 Northern Neck, VA-ca.1748 Prince William Co., VA) Lived at one time in Stafford Co. on Occoquan & Niapsco (also called Nebasco Creek, Stafford Co.) Later may have lived on Hooe's Creek, which MAY have been in the same vicinity. There is some indication he may have owned land in Richmond Co., all these counties being part of Northern Neck Virginia. They may have owned land in various counties as the family expanded and as the counties divided. According to Lewin Dwinell McPherson, who wrote a Kincheloe family history which he published ca. 1951, John Kincheloe, son of Cornelius Kincheloe, was married to Elizabeth Canterbury. (McPherson says John Kincheloe owned land in Richmond Co. ca 1725 [deed to Anthony Snider]) and later in Stafford Co. (1728-1732) Later in Prince William Co.) My further notes indicate these were some of Mary's siblings (and their spouses, where known) Margaret [Peggy] Kincheloe wife of George Foote, Jr., believed to be of Fauquier Co., VA Cornelius Kincheloe CORNELIUS KINCHELOE II. Cornelius Kincheloe, son of John Kincheloe and brother of Daniel Kincheloe, was baptized in 1721 in North Farnham Parish Richmond Co., VA. "Kincheloe, Cornelius, son of John and Elizabeth Kincheloe, 8 Oct 1721" (George Harrison Sanford King, THE REGISTERS OF NORTH FARNHAM PARISH 1663-1814 AND LUNENBURG PARISH, 1783-1800, RICHMOND COUNTY, VIRGINIA [Fredericksburg, VA, 1966], p. 111.) Daniel Kincheloe [Elizabeth Wickliffe] John Kincheloe [Mary Wickliffe] Elizabeth Kincheloe said to have been married twice: 1. Isaac Davis and 2. Rodham Blanchett Wileman Kincheloe (Name comes from McPherson's genealogy of the Kincheloe family. An e-mal correspondent gives this information: Apparently Wileman Kincheloe married his niece: Mary Kincheloe, dau of John Kincheloe and Milly Butler. Sarah Kincheloe 2 Mar 1762 between William Tyler and Sarah his Wife land conveyed to Sarah Kincheloe who intermarried with said William Tyler (From Prince William County Deed Book 1761-1764; pp. 160-162) And there are probably more Kincheloes whom I have overlooked. With the exception of Mary Kincheloe Simpson, the children of John Kincheloe and Elizabeth Canterbury seem to have remained in Virginia--in or around Northern Neck Virginia. Thanks for your interest.
