Thank you for sending the following message. This seems to confirm that a Harmon Button prior to ca 1790 was married to a Catherine Kemper. Also listed Harmon Button, Jr. and Jacob Button and Thomas Button My response: I found my notes about Henry Kemper (Kamper), which are rather cryptic, and which now require more study on my part: HENRY KEMPER. (ca 1730-after Nov 1787) Information for dates of Henry Kemper come from NSDAR Gen Recs Comm, Lineage of Andrew Jackson Kemper. Henry Kemper is probably earlier known as John Henry Kemper, all the German children (males particularly) having the same first name, with the second name being the "calling" name. The name of John Henry Kemper appears in early Northern Neck surveys and land grants. Survey for Prince William Co., survey made for Thomas Jordan, 11 Mar 1739- 21 May 1740; between Carters Great Run & Barrows Run on Rappa. R. "adj John Henry Kemper." (Peggy Shomo Joyner's ABSTRACTS OF VIRGINIA'S NORTHERN NECK WARRANTS & SURVEYS... DUNMORE, SHENANDOAH, CULPEPER, PRINCE WILLIAM, FAUQUIER & STAFFORD COUNTIES 1710-1780, V. III, p. 117.) At approximately the same time, John Kemper/Kempar, apparently the father, had land surveyed. "Wart adds Peter Kemper, and the chain carrier was Peter Kemper. However, at the bottom: N.d. - "in the name of Heni [Henry], Catharina & Maria Kemper." These are probably all children of John Kemper. Abstract of the actual grant, as opposed to the survey, differs somewhat in wording: Northern Neck Grant Bk E-408 Heni [Henry?], Catherine Kemper & Maria Kemper son and daughters of John Kemper of Pr. William Co. 362 A in said Co. on the Great Run of Rappahannock R. adj. Kemper's other land. Thomas Lee, Esq., Heirs of Maj. Richard Buckner decd. Surv by Mr. John Savage. 22 Jan 1741. (Gertrude E. Now I have to sort out whether these pertain to the same Henry Kamper and try to determine more about his siblings. Back to the books (and film) when I get rid of some of my home chores and volunteer work!!! E.W.Wallace
Wow! What a challenging question. The Northern Neck is defined as the "neck" of land between the tidal waters of the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers. It is broadly known as the proprietary of the Lord Fairfax which extended to the headwaters of the rivers. As for who came, many of the seats of Virginia families were in the NN. The NN Historical Soc. would be a good source of info. Bill

Sarah Roach was living in Prince William Co VA. All of his other children were living in Mason Co KY and sent legal authorizations back to George Roach was was acting as administrator of his father in law's property. William White's neighbor, William Hunton and George Roach did an appraisal of William White's property in Oct 1804. George Roach sold the land to William Hunton in May 1816. William White Sr's estate was not completely settled until 1825. His widow, Ann [Bailey] White did not want to record his will and disputed whether he was on sound mind when he wrote it. William White's son, John White, married Ann's daughter, Ann Bailey. John acted in his former step mother's behalf at court sessions. When I first read the court papers, I thought John married his step mother. Upon more careful reading of the old document, I see that John married his step mother's child by her first marriage, Ann Bailey. Jim - please add my congratulations, too. My ancestor, Thomas BARTLETT c1730-1806 was in Fauquier Co, VA 1768-1785 (before moving west to Harrison Co, VA). By the weight of much circumstantial evidence we determined he was the son of Thomas BARTLETT, Sr c1705-1783 of Richmond Co, VA. We started a familytreedna project two years ago, and now have DNA matches from my ancestor and another son of the Thomas BARTLETT of Richmond Co (a John BARTLETT who became John BARTLEY in Culpeper Co, VA (c1750-1791) before moving to Fluvanna Co, VA) - our BARTLETT DNA Project has proved several lines now, and we've now gotten links to BARTLEYs, BERKLEYs (from Loudoun Co) and BARCLIFTs... just to show how the spelling varied in those times. My DNA is from the above William Burgess from Bedford County. My mother's Burgess ancestor William Burgess died in 1712 in Richmond County, Virginia. Michael Burgess's DNA is from Richmond County. Michael Burgess and I have been working for many years trying to determine the parents of both William Burgess ancestors with veyr little apparent success. I have also indicated to both lists that we have been involved with the www.familytreedna.com project. The results came in yesterday. Michael Burgess author of The House of Burgesses called last night to tell me that we have a match. Hallelujah! Every Burgess in Burgess, Mullins, Browning, Brown and Allied families and every Burgess in The House of Burgesses are related. This means that our research is accurate. Would love to have some other distant Burgess cousins join us in this project for further confirmation. That means my father and mother were cousins. We cannot prove with research the connection but have a 99.9% DNA connection. Here is the note from familytreedna You have a match! An exact match has been found between you and another person(s) in the Family Tree DNA database. You and the other person(s) have matched in all loci, which means that there is a 99.9% likelihood that you have a common ancestor. There is a 50% likelihood that the common ancestor is within the last 14.5 generations and 90% within the last 48 generations. If you and your match share a "prior" item of knowledge, such as a common surname, then a recent (within 14.5 generations) common ancestor is fairly likely. If not, then the common ancestor is probably closer to the 48 generations. Please remember to add your results to www.Ysearch.org, the FTDNA sponsored public database. On the left side of your personal page you will see an explanation and a link for the upload. The link below will take you to your Family Tree DNA Login. Hi Tom, and others, Just recently, the Fauquier chancery index has been up-loaded the LVA digital library. You'll find a lot of info about Withers (and a lot of other families) on this web site under "Court Records" http://www.historiccourtrecords.org/ i.e, there's a court record concerning George L. Ball & c to James Withers & co Fauquier Co. - 1823. Mentions Aggy Withers mar. to Martin Porter; Aggy sister to Lewis Withers.
Look at the Library of Virginia web site ("What We Have"), where they have a Chancery index for some VA counties. They have one for Frederick county ("northwest"). I looked and there's one entry for a Ralph Weathers vs. Sarah Harell, 1796. Then when you search for Withers, there are several entries, 1821 & upwards, John & Reuben Withers, et. al. To view the chancery files, you need to borrow the microfilm via ILL (if that's possible), or go to the Library of VA and look at the files on microfilm. I've looked at them before and there's plenty of Loudoun people ... Fauquier also, I assume. There just might be some very useful Weathers / Withers information in these files. With chancery cases, you never know until you look. It might be nothing, but then again it could detail relationships. I would have to guess that the Thomas Weathers who married Bonham would have had to at the least visited Frederick county, VA, where Aaron Bonham lived. I don't have the record with me, but there's some court order in Frederick where their two names are together. But no useful genealogical information in that court order. (Thomas Weathers m. a Bonham). Tom Bishop P.S. My memory is foggy on this -- but I remember reading somewhere about a Fauquier chancery index that is available only at the Fauquier county courthouse. I sure would like to know if I'm correct on that? Years ago, someone sent me a copy of a Fauquier co., chancery suit which demolished a genealogical "brick wall" for me (John O. Lawrence family).
I noticed in the WITHERS will that a daughter married John ALLEN. I have a John ALLEN, Sr. born many years earlier who married a Barbara WITHERS. I guess our families just continued to intermarry. Oh, well...... Velma
I am curious about these names. In reading the will of William Withers he mentions his daughter Agatha Withers wife of Martin Porter. I show in my database collection a Samuel Porter b.abt. 1774 d. 1836 m. 1796 to Mary Withers. I've been trying to find the Porter and Doddridge connections to my John Wilson and/or his wife Elizabeth Chinn. They named a son Samuel Porter Wilson. Coincidentally, John Wilson and Elizabeth Chinn also married in 1796. I'm wondering if this is the Samuel Porter his son is named after and if so, WHY? I also see that William Withers had a daughter that married John Ball Jr. Elizabeth Chinn is from the BALL family. Does anyone know anything about the Porter family. Thanks Janean

I'm a Holtzclaw/Otterbach descendant and we have a Withers, Mauzy, Duncan connection, too. There is one in particular that BC Holtzclaw writes about, John or James Withers Payne, the husband of Elizabeth Holtzclaw b. 1821, Elizabeth is the daughter of Charles Holtzclaw and Clement Welch. John or James Withers Payne is the daughter of Francis Payne, Jr and his wife, Patsy Withers, but I don't have any more info about Patsy. One of my Holtzclaw cousins is a descendant and I'll see what she has. Barb Price
