    1. [VAFAUQUI] Some Camper [Kemper} Connections in Fayette Co., KY
    2. Those of you interested in some First Germanna Colonists of 1714 ancestry may be interested to learn of some of the Revolutionary War activities involving one Tilman Camper [Kemper] and some information about his widow, the former Diana [sometimes spelled Deniah] Hitt, formerly of Fauquier Co., VA and later of Fayette Co., Kentucky. Oh, yes, in the book following the abstract of the pension claim of Camper and that of his widow is the pension claim [abstracted] of one Coons. There may be others from Germanna colonies, but I was not searching for them. Of course, if you have HeritageQuest, you may find the actual image of the pension claim on HeritageQuest, of which see below. The information appears in a digitized book, information given below, which appears on the online genealogical database called HeritageQuest, available through many public libraries who subscribe. (If you do not know whether your local library or a nearby public library subscribes, confer with your reference librarian. Some tell me they have been able to buy an annual membership at a nearby library and can access this database at their home computer. Genealogists have to learn to ask LOTS of questions.) The name of the digitized book (search under the heading Books): Burns, Annie Walker Revolutionary War pensions of soldiers who settled in Fayette County Washington, DC: Unknown, 1936, 122 pgs. A good many of the First Germanna descendants migrated to early Kentucky. >From Kentucky, descendants went everywhere!!! Also, in Fayette Co. are wills of Henry Camper [Kemper], written 24 Nov 1792, probated Jan 1793; and of his widow Letitia Camper written 4 Mar 1812 and proved May 1812. These abstracts may also be on HeritageQuest, but I have not finished my quest!!! By the way, Fayette Co. divided into a good many other counties, so if you have lost your family, look in adjoining counties. 2. I have copies of my gg-grandfather's letters to his wife Lucinda Hopkins Hanson from 1862, just two months before he died at Chattanooga. In those letters he mentioned many names of people he had come into contact with during that period of his service, about 11-12 people in all. No one in my family ever knew who the people mentioned in his letters were, and then I began researching: they were his cousins and in-laws and in one case a family friend. I have been able to identify all but one person he mentioned in his letters to Lucinda. I'm pretty sure the only unidentied Redd Hanson was related but I do not know how. Someone out there in the netherspace of email will appreciate your transcription of that small diary and maybe be able to identify a relative or two thanks to your interest. We never know when our own personal interest and reserch will someday prove beneficial to someone else in their family research, so please keep sharing information even when you don't know any individual you have discovered is or where that person came from. Thanks to the technology at hand these days, someone will connect eventually and you will never know the enormouse favor you have done. May you all have a "happy dance" of discovery. Is he connected to amy of the Hoomes, Homes or Holmes who are currently under discussion? I think Christopher was born about 1700, possibly in Culpepper County, VA. I believe his father was George Hoomes. I also believe he might have been married to (or had a relationship with Elizabeth Freeman). They might have parented the following Hoomes children: Thomas, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ann, George, Mary and Frances. Christopher also had a child out of wedlock with Margaret (Margery) Sherrill about 1742. The child was named William Sherrill. I will appreciate your help. 2. Any diary from the Civil War era is of interest, even though the people are not known. My grandfather was a Captain in the artillery with the army during the retreat from Yorktown. He has written about the terrible mud and having to push the cannon because the horses could not pull them alone. It would be interesting to look up the records for that period and associate the diary with the maneuvers. I don't have time to do it. 2. Tim Kreh
    3. Everyone, I have transcribed a small diary of someone from Fauquier, who drove cattle for the Confederate Army. The diary is from 1862, but I have no clue who the author is. The only acquaintance listed in the diary who I believe to be from Fauquier was William Eustace. The diary covers about a month from April - May 1862, when the army was falling back towards Richmond. If anyone has anything to add or has more information, please let me know, and I will incorporate that into the information and repost it. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tkreh/CWDiary.htm Thanks! 1. Re: [VAFAUQUI] matching marriages to census
    2. Tosca
    3. June, I'll share my thoughts with you - Diadamia possibly didn't know how old she was for the 1850 census, or her husband didn't...one never knows who gave the data to the census taker. He would have been about 34/35 when they married in 1810, possibly had already lost a wife, I would suspect she was really about 55 when the census was taken. That might have been a good guess! On rootsweb, database "Emmons/Sutton Family" by Lorraine Wolf http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2370107&id=I512166406 1870 Census Fauquier County, Virginia, First Revenue District, Page 41, Post Office Warrenton, Dwelling 252, House 250 John W. Diademia, 76, keeping house, $1000/$170, born in Va., cannot read or write So this would mean she was born about 1795/96, so was 14 or 15 in 1810. John W. was listed as being 12 on the 1850 census, so he would only have been 22 on this 1870 census. Maybe he couldn't count either. Lorraine would be a good contact person for you and Rose. Owners: James Stigler owned this property prior to 1823; at his death it was inherited by his son George.? In 1834 William Jones bought 54 3/4 acres from George Stigler.? Originally 3 room log house with 2 shed rooms.? James Stigler who owned 700 acres of land extending from Summerduck to Pineview, died previous to Sep. 1823. William Jones owned 700 acres including the following farms: John Kemper, Earl Lunsford, Jim Embrey, Frank Embrey, Jim Jones, and Floyd Smith.? Jones, who died before Sep. 1855, married Diadema Holmes who died during the war between the states.? They were the parents of 10 children, namely: James, Marshall, Franklin, John, Andrew, William, Piney, Susie, Mary and Diadema.? ? During the war between the states the federals went in a tented wagon to Diadema Jones', widow of William, and got corn.? The old lady's teeth were gone and her mouth had settled at the corner.? When the soldier came back one of them said, "that old woman over there, her mouth is run down at the heel." ? Andrew Jackson Jones, son of William and Diadema Holmes, organized a milita company at Morrisville, Va... The company was in Pickett's Division at the Battle of Gettysburg.? Jones had then been promoted to Captain. During the battle he felt bullets clipping off locks of his hair...? During the retreat, a minnie ball struck Capt. Jones' ankle and knocked his feet under him.? Henry Claxton took him and put him on his back and put him behind a cabin.? A federal officer came along.? He got down and put Capt. Jones up in the saddle and led the horse.? He did not take Jones' pistol.? The thought came to Jones how easily he could kill the officer and then ride on to his company, but he put the thought aside.? Later he was sent to the officer's prison on the Great Lakes.? Here he almost starved because he was fed on beans that the rats had run over... His foot finally got well, but he always limped." 1. [VAFAUQUI] CORRECTION concerning JOHN BURKE
    2. Amanda E. Douglass
    3. I made an error in my posted message concerning Burke help. I posted that John Burke was married to Elizabeth Sweney. WRONG. Should read John Burke married to Elizabeth SHAW (Dec. 23, 1816 bdsm: Wm. Shaw) John's father was Patriot William Burke and he was married to Susanna Sweney (1 Feb. 1778 in King George County in St. Paul's Parrish.) (Sweney or Sweeney depending on records.) Had my cousin confused and glad he caught it so I could make correction. I'm sorry for the confusion this may have caused to others. Amanda
