For those who wish a copy of the flow chart titled "Formation of Virginia Counties 1634" which Bill Stribling generously offered on 7 December to scan and e-mail it to anyone interested, it would be beneficial to the list if you would email him directly with your request. His email address is: [email protected]
Hi Bill Stribling. Could I please have a copy of the Flow Chart. Thank you for this wonderful gift to all of us. Ginny K. [email protected]

These three families moved between Culpeper and Fauquier ib rgw 17th and 18th cenuries. Courtney Norman^3 and Alice Jett married in Culpeper in 1793, I ann trying to verfify that Benjamin Norman b. 1794 and Alcie.Alcey Norman b. 1796 are two of their six children, Much has been written about the first two generartions, and about the Browning and Broyhill families, but nothing about this family, I believe Courtney^3 is a missng branch of the Norman family. Benjamin's father and grandfather, both named Courtney, married women named Mary Browning and Frances Browning. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
I saw this subject name pop up in a recent post on this list. Most of the subscribers probably know this, but if you don't, listen up. In the Family History Library Catalog on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) , you can do a Surname search. If you search for common names, you will be sorry. However, Embrey and its variant spellings is fairly uncommon. Do a Surname search for uncommon surnames--one at a time. I note that there are ten publications at the Family History LIbrary in Salt Lake City which deal with the Embrey surname. If the book or publication has NOT been filmed and you think you would like to borrow the film through your nearby Family History Center, ask that the publication be filmed or microfiched. If a title is listed twice in a catalog entry, one of the entries probably refers to a film or a fiche, so click away. Look for the word Forms somewhere on the familysearch.org website, and then choose from a drop-down menu *Sort by title* Click on R for the word Request. The form you are seeking is Request for Photocopy. One techinique a researcher taught me, but which I have NOT used, is to ask for a photocopy of the index of any book held by the FH Library. Then you can choose the page numbers which you want photocopied and make a new request. I believe that same form allows for you to request a microfiche. (In some cases, if a publication is under copyright, your request for the whole thing to be microfiched or filmed MAY be denied.) But, if you don't ask, you won't know. If I don't know the first name of a person I am looking for what I do is start with the common first names of male and female...John, Thomas, William and Joseph. Mary, Martha etc.Everybody has one of those in their family. And I also be sure to pick a state. That narrows down the field and you can expand it from there.

You are so thoughtful, June, I should have explained better in the other posting. I've saved these marriages from the other post too. My problem is separating 'which' Bailey Shumate. I am hoping some SHUMATE & / or WEAVER descendant can explain. Question: 1) Is this the 'same' Bailey Shumate marrying in 1791, 1800 & 1842? 2) If NOT the same Bailey Shumate, how many are there? 3) If 2 or 3 with the same name, do they have different parents? .........If so, WHO are they? I figure the Bailey Shumate who m'd Elizabeth WEAVER in 1800 almost has to be the father of James B Shumate (b.14 Sep 1808), VA. In my notes, I have about 3 or 4 Elizabeth Weavers and Ann Elizabeth Weavers. Like many families, every WEAVER sibling had one. Maybe some day, a researcher can help me unscramble these. Currently, I'm reading a lot of various records, etc. Thanks so much for trying to send as much info as you can find.
