Dear Jane: Would you happen to have a Daniel Thompson in your line? I have Daniel Thompson as the father of Louisa Thompson (b. Dec. 22, 1822 - d. Feb. 2, 1914) who married John C. Grim(m) (b. 1818 - d. 1903). Daniel Thompson was married 27 May 1820 in Fauquier co., Va. to Elizabeth (Bettie) Conner (b. abt. 1795 - d. unk.) . These Thompson's were from Fauquier County. If any of this rings a bell with you, please let me know as there is a possible connection to your Thompson's. Thank you Charlene, Thanks for adding other names you are searching. Because another on the Fauquier List did the same, we were able to uncover the ancestors of Kimble HICKS. I'd searched all around Fauquier and all of Virginia, with no results. I'd asked many with a Hicks ancestry, with NO results. Yet, she had 2 Kimble Hicks. Best yet, she had several Hicks (descendants) grandmothers who were 'savers'. With an old letter from a trunk, we found Kimble Hicks' father and siblings. >From other indications, I believe a few Virginia Historians had failed to find the treasure this helpful lady unveiled. Thank you Anne. I'd always wondered about that Subject: line search. I just wonder why Rootsweb even bother with Body:, From:, or Date: options. Seems a waste if the Subject: line is the only necessary option being used. Can you elaborate on this? I may be able to help you when I dig out my Jolly Researcher Magazines to check your names. My great grandfather was Lewis Wilson Hall Jolly who married Mary Frances Williams. He had also been married to two named Bank. They all lives at time in the Coffee Co TN area and some descendants went to Talladega AL. There was a Wilson Jolly, Rev War soldier, from SC whom I suspect is connected to my grand grandfather- who called himself Wills Jolly. Mary Henke, deceased and a wonderful Jolly researcher as she properly named her magazines, has many postings on Jolly forum. It you are not familiar with it, let me know with your personal E Mail and I will send you the URL. Welcome to this great site. See also Prince William, Stafford, and even back to Lancaster Co VA. Many families followed this route. ** Court, Land, Wills and Financial of Isle of Wight, VA, Will Book III, 1647-1800 has: James Jolley, Estate appraised by William Noyall, Robert Driver, Christopher Reynolds, William West. Recorded March 23, 1729. ** Note, checking Isle of Wight's own genealogy, it states that early on, Isle of Wight extended 90 miles down into North Carolina. County names that sound too odd to be related to us- some times surprise us. Ginny Keefer [email protected]
Many thanks to E. W. Wallace for the guidelines for "newbies" of which I am one. I haven't posted any queries yet, am a little nervous about it. But I hope to fully participate soon. All of my paternal ancestors are from Fauquier Co at some point. They all sort of migrated there from Stafford, etc. Oh well, since I'm here. The names I am researching are: Templeman, Nelson, Strother, Jolley, Saunders, Berry, Robinson, and some others. I have a cousin in Charleston, SC and she and I are researching together. So far we have 17 lines that we have researched, some with as many as 23 generations. We have hit a brick wall on Elizabeth Furr and her father William, Elizabeth was born abt 1780 and married Jacob Jolley in 1815. If anyone can help with Elizabeth, Anne and I will be grateful. Hope my first query was done correctly. If not, someone please let me know. Thanks Shirley, Sandra and others who may jump in this Jones hunt. I am excited for sure! I did find a wonderful piece to this puzzle but I'm giving the credit where credit is due--to all my pals & mentors: June, Tim, Mary Jo, Charlene, Barbara, Renee and dear cousin Artie. Thanks! A ----------Now for more JONES ideas re this JETT connection...and possibly HOOE! Elizabeth Waugh, sister of Charles Jones, was listed on personal property tax lists from 1810 to 1815 King George Co. (KGC) I looked up the 1810 Census for KGC and found Elizabeth Waugh on same page with John Whiting (Need to know if he's related to Francis W.?) Augustine Weedon William Stone and Charles Jones were close. William Stone had daughter, Margaret Stone, married James W. Child, brother of Ann Childs m. Charles Jones. Also, William Stone had son Issac Stone m. Ann WEEDON, d/o Thomas Weedon. So maybe Augustine Weedon connects to line of Thomas Weedon? These were the names on same page of 1810 KGC census where I found Charles Jones and William A. G. Jones. Note these Jones are in with some JETT. Peter Jones Wm. S? Jett Thomas Jackson Stephen Jett Benjamin Jones Watts Jones Wm. Lewis Jones Thomas Jenkins David W. Jones Wm. A. G. Jones (admin. of Elizabeth Waugh) George M. Jones George Jones Charles Jones (brother of Elizabeth (Jones) Waugh and gdn. of daughter Tabitha.) Wm. B. Johnson Sam Jones Larkins Johnston Robert Johnston George Jacob Sam Jones and Peter Jones above on 1810 KGC Census with Charles Jones and William A. G. Jones. We know that above Charles Jones and William A. G. Jones were on Will of Elizabeth Waugh. For now, I'm going to assume that both William and Charles were brothers of Elizabeth (Jones) Waugh. So wondering if below Samuel Jones and Peter Jones could be ones on page with Charles Jones? Comment debt on a note Defendant Samuel Jones Locality Spotsylvania Co. Plaintiff Nathaniel H. Good show digging up all this. You know I'd love to make a connection with the infamous Willie Jett. Here's a little info Willie S. Jett was the son of Charles C. Jett and Mary Wallace Ball Towles Jett. Here is the entry from the History of the Ninth Virginia Cavalry from RL Krick: JETT, WILLIAM STORKE: b. 12/2/1846. Enl. 6/16/64 in Co. C. Severely wded. on 6/29/64. fighting the Wilson raiders, by a gunshot wound in the abdomen. The ball lodged in his intestines and he was kept off duty to the end of the war. As a result of contact with the fleeing John Wilkes Booth (whether the contact was innocent or not remains under debate), Jett was arrested in Westmoreland Co. on 5/1/65; he was released from Old Capitol Prison on 5/31/65. d. 7/17/1884 of apoplexy in Williamsburg. bur. Lucky you - you have a common-named ancestor [Jones, I presume] who is associated with two families with not-so-common surnames - Waugh and Jett. I met a woman named Jett at a genealogical Elderhostel many years ago. Although one Jett family later was in Granville Co., NC in the colonial era, just before the Revolution, she told me that the Jett surname is found predominantly in Northern Neck Virginia. As I have read over old records for most of the Northern Neck Virginia counties, I stumble on the surname Waugh all the time. Your folks are much later than most of my folks, however. If you do a google.com search for Waugh family and Jett family, you will find some genealogy boards which MAY provide you with some clues. I personally would start with the Land Records of the Library of Virginia website, but that is my preference. Most Virginians of the white race, according to William Dollarhide, a noted genealogist, in the early days owned land, and therefore land records will help you place some folks in a time and a place. Fauquier Co. was formed from Prince William Co. and so on--you have to know the genealogy of the counties also. Some of Prince William's records are missing. To those who have interest in the line of Charles Jones m. Ann Childs, I finally found that Charles Jones had sister Elizabeth Jones who was married to JAMES WAUGH and had daughter Tabita Waugh who would later be the Tabitha A. Waugh on the 1860 Fauquier County Census. The JETT name of interest because Robert Duncan had daughter ROSEY DUNCAN who married JAMES JETT. ROSEY's sister was Mary Duncan and she married first JOSEPH HACKLEY who was brother of LOTT HACKLEY. Lott Hackley connected to Alexander McConchie whose wife Ann McConchie named Charles Jones as her "kinsman" and he married Ann Childs, d/o Milly McConchie and James Childs. If anyone can shed light on what line of JONES this might be and the JETT lines, I'd appreciate any feedback. (I am ordering copies of records cited below.)
