    3. Charlotte - I don't believe yours tie in with mine but I did find a 1855 court suit against Landon L. Carter's heirs and listing the minor childen as Ada Byron Carter, Alice Lee Carter, Edward Carter, Orra Ella Carter ad Mary Kossuth (?) Carter. Also listed as deceased besides Landon L. is a Catherine Carter. Could this be yours? Jackie Charlotte Brown wrote: > My paternal great grand Aunt Catherine E. Murray married Landon L. 1. [VAFAUQUI] My known Landon CARTERs
    2. I know how confusing the CARTERs are and I am "still" trying to make sense of the them at a very slow pace. This is a brief breakdown of my efforts in progress which are not necessarily correct: Landon CARTERs 1. Colonel Landon CARTER of "Sabin Hall"; 1709-1778; Wives: Elizabeth WORMLEY, Maria BIRD and Elizabeth BEALE of "Hesse". This Landon was a son of Robert "King" CARTER and half brother, to the John CARTER I suspected of being the one we seek within the lawsuit. John CARTER of Sudley (1737-1789, married to Janet HAMILTON was Landon No. 1's brother. 2. Landon Wormley CARTER, the son of #1; of Pittsylvania Plantation; 1738-1790; Wife: Judith Lucy FAUNTLEROY. 3. Landon CARTER, the son of Colonel Charles CARTER & Ann BIRD of "Cleves", King George County, Virginia; son Landon also from "Cleves"; 1750-1800; Wives: Mildred Elizabeth WILLIS, Molly FAUNTLEROY of "Nailor's Hole" and the widow, Elizabeth CARTER of "Sabin Hall" (Prelsey THORNTON). 4. Landon CARTER of "Sabin Hall"; 1761-1820; son of Robert Wormley CARTER and Winifred Travener BEALE; Wives: Catherine Griffin TAYLOE, Mary Burwell ARMISTEAD. His father, Robert Wormley was the son of Landon No. 1 and wife Elizabeth WORMLEY. 5. Landon CARTER of Pittsylvania, Prince William County, Virginia; born: ca 1789; Wife: Emily Henry CARTER. He was the son of Wormley CARTER and his wife Sara "Sally" EDWARDS. Wormley CARTER was the son of Landon CARTER No. 2 and his wife, Judith Lucy FAUNTLEROY. Chocy - Are you sure these are brothers? Landon Carter married to Elizabeth Wormley had son Landon Jr. and Robert Wormeley Carter. Landon Jr. had a son Charles Landon (who went variously by Charles or C.L. or Landon on court documents) and also a son Wormeley. Any combination of the four can be found on various court papers. Landon and Elizabeth Wormeley also had a son John (John of Sudely) who married Janet Hamilton. It is their son John whose will I believe you find in 1838. He also had a brother Landon and a brother Robert. Have I mentioned this family drives me nuts? Jackie

    3. Chocy, I would only be distantly kin to  the children of Eleanor Eltonhead and Col John Carter.as it is  Eleanor's sister Martha that married Edwin Conway, Sr that are my grandparents.  I don't have a Carter grandparent.. just Martha  Eltonhead and Edwin Conway , Sr. .  I have wondered who Col. John Carter's parents  are but never pursued it  but am still working on my Conway line mainly.  But there are mamy descendants both from the  Eltonhead and Conway lines  all over Virginia and some in Maryland and that would include Carter descendants.. John CARTER d: 1699 "Nominy" To: vafauqui@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, February 14, 2010, 12:09 AM I finished going over some of the material we have been discussing and  hopefully I am not to confused. If anyone can set me straight, please do. First, this is for Mary Ann and is only a thought out of desperation to  find out who the parents of your Colonel John CARTER of Rap. Rv. in Lancaster  County who died: 1699 at "Nominy". Not knowing his birth year, I thought I'd throw this out as a  possibility. Robert CARTER and his wife Pricilla BLADEN were married about 1725. Robert  estimated birth year is ca 1704 and he died about 1732 at "Nominy" leaving 3  children that I know of  born between 1726 and the time of his death in  1732 at about age 28. If you figure in having a child about every two years they  had time to have at lease one more child or even two if Pricilla was expecting  at the time of Robert's death.   You may already have explored this  family; but if not it might turn up something for you. This was the son of  Robert "King" CARTER of "Corotoman Plantation", Lancaster County,  Virginia. I now have 7 Landon CARTERs. Thanks to everyone for the lawsuit information. I did not have any of John  CARTER of "Sudley" and his wife, Janet HAMILTION's children. For sure Robert,  Landon and Wormley are their children. However, as heirs of this John CARTER are Anne Beale, John and Edward  CARTER, also his children. Edward CARTER, probably not; but who are his  parents? CARTER the fun family, Chocy

    3. Well there is one other Charles Landon you have to watch for - and I am still not sure where he fits in. That is Dr. Charles Landon Carter - and he was running around in the same area for a while. It is quite easy to try to get him mixed up in this whole mess. I might also mention that a few records from this branch are found in Loudoun county since a daughter of the correct Charles Landon moved there with her husband, who also had a propensity for filing court suits some of which resulted from this original court suit. I would have to look but I think the last record I have for any legal action that stemmed in one way or another from the original 1796 action is in 1848 - four years after Marion Steuart Carter Rhodes death. Any my sympathy on the boot. I was in one earlier this year for about six weeks. I wish I could blame something normal like black ice. I can't. I broke my foot chasing one of our cockatiels around. 3. I just had to correct  a death date on my 9th great grandfather Edwin Conway, Sr from the Glassell book by Hayden. So I think in most data there will be errors.  Mine could be wrong on that last posting on the Carters in Loudoun but it was what I came across but can't vouch for it. Just throwing it out for consideration. My Edwin Conway, Sr actually died 1660/61 and Henry Corbin was executor but Hayden gave 1687 which actually was a family member doing another court record. I don't think I have ever seen him referred to as Landon Wormley. As for Charles Landon - you will sometimes see people refer to him as Charles Landon Beale Carter. I have never found any documentation for that and indeed all of his signatures are either C.L., Charles Landon or I have found one document that is C. Landon Carter.  I believe he was probably actually born in Fauquier Co. since that is where the family estate was - but his later estate of Ridgeville apparently spanned the two counties a bit. Charles and Ann Steuart Carter had 8 children - and their names just add to the family pattern  - Susan Catherine, Judith Anne, Hebe, Charles Landon, Mary Fauntleroy, Marion Steuart, Duncan Steuart and Ellen Moore Carter.  Fauntleroy was carried as a middle name in this family for several generations. 3. I can't speak to the veracity of the Charles & Ann Bird family - while I note them they are a branch I have not delved into much. I have a specific interest in a couple of Landon Jr.'s children who have never been traced much so I have concentrated my efforts there. However the rest of your list is basically as I have it give a year or two on a birthdate. The 1804 court suit what lists Robert Carter on behalf of the heirs is long - but it does give some family relationships. It also has some basic maps. Charles Landon Carter (many misread his middle initial as he signed it so you find him listed many times as C.K.) complicated things later when his health (mental I believe) failed him after his wife's death and his portion of the estate of Landon Jr. also became a legal mess involving some of these same people. Charles Landon's land was known as Ridgeville - and I have yet to find a good map showing that. Even more of the disputed area ended up with Landon Jr.'s daughter Judith who married Dr. Isaac Henry and later gained infamy as the first female civilian casualty of the Civil War during the first battle of Manassas (or Bull Run). By then the estate of this branch of the Carter family was being subdivided into oblivion. 3. Marianne - That was the will that started the court case to which I referred. Apparently there was a subsequent dispute between Landon Jr. and John as to how the land should be divided between them. A later court suit (actually a continuation of the first but filed separately) gives further details. Landon Jr. and John apparently came to an agreement but it was never carried out before John's death - and that was when things got hairy. But I do think the answer to the original question will be found within this branch of the family. There are enough John's to go around. Jackie marianne dillow wrote: > I came in late too.... 2. Marrianne, I have 6 Landon CARTERs, but none connected as a son to a John CARTER, except Charles CARTER who may have been called by Landon as Pat said there was a Charles CARTER that went by Landon. I do have two Charles Landon CARTERs; but their fathers were not named John CARTER. Pat statement makes sense, as the Charles CARTER, son of this John CARTER may have had the middle name of Landon, like the others. (given names in these connecting families, as you know, just keep right on repeating themeselves--------they must have drove each other crazy if they all got together at a gathering!) If I knew that the "Secretary" John CARTER had a son named Wormley, then I would be more sure that I had the right family. Chocy

    3. I came in on this discussion a bit late - but a Fauquier county court case that I have looked at (1976-012) shows as a plaintiff Charles Landon Carter Erc. and defendcents the Administrators of the estate of John Carter. If you look up the case it lists Charles Landon Carter and his brother Moore Fauntleroy Carter (sons of Landdon Carter Jr. and Judith Fauntleroy as suing their cousins - the administrators of John Carter ....The administrators are listed as Landon Carter, Wormley Carter and Robert Carter - but the case goes on to list the heirs of John Carter deceased as Robert, Landon, Anne Beale, John and Edward Carter and his wife Jane. Edward Carter would not be a son of John Carter - He married his cousin Jane who was his daughter. Also listed as heirs but infants under the age 21 are George Carter, William Fitzhugh Carter, Edward Carter Jr., Betsy Carter and Matilda Carter. Those children are all listed as having Robert Carter as a guardian. The John Carter deceased would be John of Sudely the son of Landon Carter and Elizabeth Wormley. This side of the family was embroiled in a long standing court case begun about 1796 which if my memory serves me right outlasted many of those who were involved and well into the 1820s or early 1830s. 3. 2. Does anyone have a Phoebe/Phebe Carter in their files???? Probably born between 1720/30. I have a John White who was in Lunenburg who married a Phoebe/Pebe and they had a son, Carter. The name Carter had come down in the family for many years. We THINK Phoebe was a Carter. To: vafauqui@rootsweb.com Date: Saturday, February 13, 2010, 9:41 PM Marianne - That was the will that started the court case to which I referred. 3. Don't you just hate it when they keep naming each other after the other one.. generation after generation. LOL !   I think the snow is getting to me plus I fell and broke my left ankle and had surgery and am in a boot until March 16th when I start physical therapy.. it is called black ice no one can see .. and I didn't.  I have to have a sense of humor until then.  Playing around with the Carters adds to the humor.  LOL ! To: vafauqui@rootsweb.com Date: Saturday, February 13, 2010, 9:41 PM Marianne - That was the will that started the court case to which I referred. 3. I came in late too.... Marianne Dillow I have parts of a will here: Will of Landon Carter (1770/1779) of Sabine Hall, Richmond County, Virginia ***************************************************************************************** In the Name of God Amen, I Landon Carter of Sabine Hall in Richmond County being of sound and disposing mind and memory the fourth day of September in the year of our Lord seven hundred and seventy do make this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all other Wills that have been heretofore made by me. Item 1st. I intend that my son Robert Wormeley Carter shall have one half of my slaves excepting I have hereafter given to George Carter my grandson and to Robert Hamilton and the other half much the same excepting just mentioned to be actually divided between my sons Landon Carter and John Carter. But whereas I have by a kind of gift or schedule signed by me the twenty second of December in the year Seven thousand and sixty hereunto annexed in a manner made over and given to my sons Landon and John forty two slaves to be equally divided between them. And whereas I have also given to my son Robert Wormley Carter fourteen slaves the thirteenth day of November in the same years and Schedule hereunto annexed which said several slaves of said sons have severally and respectively had the possession of agreeable to such intended Gifts. I do hereby appoint my friends Mr. Nelson Berkeley, Mr. Robert Beverly, The Honble. John Tayloe and Mr. Richard Parker my trustees to divide all my slaves except as before mentioned to George Carter & Robert Hamilton into four equal parts and I do desire that in the said division they have negros to the number and not to the Quality of these Slaves that have already been given or mentioned to have been given by me (but not their increase) to my said sons the gifts before mentioned so as my intention may be complied with in giving my estate as I have before declared (to wit) two fourths of my slaves to be divided to my son Robert Wormley Carter to be allotted him by my said Trustees in which lot Johnson a Mulatto, Betty a daughter to old Frank and [creased - next two-three lines partially illegible] not their increase may be included. One fourth part of my said slaves including those before mentioned to be given by deed as aforesaid (but not their increase) so my son Landon Carter and his [illegible] fourth part including those slaves before said to be given by the said Deed but not their increase. To my son John Carter to be allotted him by my said trustees as aforesaid, and in order to prevent any [illegible] that may otherwise happen in the Division and for a future [illegible] to my said Trustees in the division of my slaves as aforesaid I do discharge my intention to be that my several Sons amt. stand to their satisfaction in the slaves I have by deed as aforesaid given them so that the number of such slaves whereby given by the deed as aforesaid must be the principal Consideration of my said trustees and the division to be made as aforesaid without their [illegible] from the date of the said gift which I intended each son should [illegible- fold/crease] ************************************************************************************ by as I subjected them to any loss that might happen in the Slaves given them as before.  As I have given so large a proportion of my slaves to my son Robert lest it should be thought that the slaves which I hold under the Will of my deceased brother George Carter are entailed (though I am fully persuaded they are not) I do declare it to be my Will and desire that my said son Robert should only have one Moiety or half part of all my slaves including of such as may be adjudged to be entailed upon him on any suit or [examination?] to be brought by him or given on his favour of his heirs for the recovery of them upon my Brother George’s Will.  I give and devise to my son Robert Wormeley Carter and his heirs forever all my lands in the counties of York, Charles City, King & Queen, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, Westmoreland, King George & Stafford and all my lands upon Chenandoah [sic] River as is all those in the County of Frederick as that tract on the blue Ridge on the Virginia side of Chimans River as it is called by the upper Inhabitants [crease - illegible] I have hereinafter given to Robert Hamilton in case that tract may happen in King George, Stafford or Prince William Countie. At a Court held for Richmond County the 1st day of Feby. 1779 This Will of Landon Carter Esqr. deceased was presented in Court by Robert Wormeley Carter, Landon Carter and John Carter Gent. the Executors therein named who made oath thereto according to Law and being proved to wit the Will and Schedule by William Beale and Walter Tomlin Gent. the first Codicil by Thomas Parker and the last codicil by the oath of David Boyd Gent. was admitted to Record, and on the motion of the said Executors giving Security a certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form. To: vafauqui@rootsweb.com Date: Saturday, February 13, 2010, 9:16 PM I came in on this discussion a bit late - but a Fauquier county court case that I have looked at (1976-012) shows as a plaintiff Charles Landon Carter Erc. and defendcents the Administrators of the estate of John Carter.
